@chr5210 Pearce was a good guy and he was also the new boyfriend of Sue Ellen after her divorce from JR. He died from falling from the balcony during the struggle with JR. And that was Sue Ellen screaming!

Instead of having JR shot once again, they could have used a similar cliffhanger with a diff. ending: As JR and Pearce fight, the gun goes off several times (no one pays attention to where the shots land), then the battle continues as it does here. After Pearce falls, JR turns to see Sue Ellen lying on the floor. He rushes to her, sees that she is bloody, and picks up the phone: "I need an ambulance. I think my wife is dead. This is JR Ewing."
