I just use the RV-5 for the Modulate mode and seeing as the HoF's Modulated Reverb is quite awful, I'm just not interested in it. I think the BSR's modulated mode isn't anything special as well.
I have this pedal and have only EVER used the modulate effect...works quite nicely for the sound I go for when I write so I'm not complaining. If it broke I'd buy the exact same one again.
Same here. I just use the Modulate mode. Have so, for years now. It's kinda one of my signature pedals, at least, in IZAH (one of the bands I play in).
Many artists who have reverb perfected use the RV-5. It's pretty ignorant to say this pedal sucks. Coldplay at records with it. reverb doesn't get much better than Coldplays reverb guys.
You know, I agree ... But look at the upload date. This video was recorded 2 years ago. I now record everything direct in (Axe-Fx ULTRA --> Presonus FirePod --> Ableton Live). If you check out the other videos, you can see the difference.
O sorry i didn't realize this was the same person with two vids in that case the noise at 3:18 is what i hear but its on all the modes except modulation, even with the dials pointing straight up it still sound in, though not as obvious. But just enough to really be annoying.
I used to own a GT-10, never had any problems with its reverb even my old Marshall's MG30DFX didn't make this noise
With the level knob, you cant get 100% wet like with the RV-3 can you?
Going stereo into the RV-5 allows for stereo out yes? (meaning Input A will come out Output A, and not blend across to Output B, and same with Input B)
Nope, it's a level control, so it increase the volume of the verb but it doesn't mix it in. And regarding the stereo function: yes, I think it's a true stereo out, if I'm not mistaken.
True bypass is when the signal doesnt go through any circuits when pedal is off, just like u were plugged strait in,but in most digital pedals ur signal goes through some circuitry when off, thus not giving u a true signal from instrument.
@DemoColorScheme When I plug into input B it really makes the sound wet, and it sounds quieter, thicker, and far away as composed to input A. Do you know why that is? Its hard to cut thru the mix when using input B, but input A still gives me the bite of the amp with the verb
No clue as to 'why' this is, but just using input B shouldn't really work, it's the stereo input. I've never tried this, but I doubt it has any positive effect on the sound .. ;)
@DemoColorScheme I have this. Im a little miffed cus the new Hardwire series has Lexicon verbs and the Modulation is more present and sounds a little more intense. I like it more intense cus I want an analog delay. Some come w/ modulation, but its pointless to spend extra when this has it, but the modulation could be more so I might try and trade it for the Hardwire
Really? I thought the Hardwire sounded especially weak in comparison to the RV-5. The modulation sounds a lot less defined than the BOSS. Also, don't kid yourself, the Hardwire definitely doesn't have real Lexicon verbs. You'll know it when you've played a Lexicon PCM 70 / 80 / 82 / 92, especially the 92, which is the king of modulated reverbs. And if you want an analog delay with mod, get one? A reverb with a modulated tail is completely different.
I don't think so. I think this is a true stereo out pedal, so it just puts the reverbs in a stereo field. I like this a lot better than a dry/wet reverb, to be honest.
thanks for posting this, it's been a huge help in making the decision to buy this pedal, i think it's gonna be great for atmospheric sounds with the modulation cranked.
I love the sound of this reverb, and just the sound of a good reverb in general. It makes the tone so atmospheric, which is a style I love. I'm definitely going to buy it then learn some of Buckethead's more emotive songs
It's a reverb pedal .. it has nothing to do with tapping. Tapping works with OD/distortion and/-or compression. Reverb can just fill it up, any reverb pedal would work.
do you know what pedal or combination of pedals could give me a note that is basicly infinite and if keep bending, can it to get a scream? i guess the best way for me to put it, is Synyster Gates new solo where he starts with that one note and bends it a little and then a lot and the note just screams.
It's got nothing to do with reverb, let me tell you. There are pedals out there that can do that; the first being a compressor. The Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone has INSANE sustain due to its unique design. Check it out! You can make your notes sustain almost infinitely if not INFINITELY.
The second would be something like an E-Bow on a string feeding back in an amp. I can't think of anything else though? There are a lot of hold/freeze functions on some pedals, but that's static, it won't scream.
huge question. this is for bass though. do you think a chorus pedal and a reverb pedal would be good together for bass for dream pop? i want to make people feel like they are floating from the bass
Absolutely. Our bassist in IZAH uses reverb and chorus as well. You could also look for a BOSS DC-2 (Dimension C) or if you can't find that, the BOSS DC-3 (Digital Dimension). The bassist from ISIS uses that as well. Lovely spatial sounds.
Question: I know when you turn the Mix knob up all the way on the RV-3, you only hear the reverb itself and not the pick attack, right? Can the RV-5 do something similar?
Aha. Well, you could've also googled the pedal so you could look up the info. But, as I'm hearing you're in need of reverse reverb? Some old Yamaha racks do that, the Yamaha Magicstomp does it [though I think that pedal is a piece of shite], the DigiTech DigiVerb does reverse as well.
yeah, i know that the digverb has a bunch of modes, reverse included; but for some strange reason, boss reverb is actually CHEAPER than the digitech ones here in brazil. i like boss pedals better, but i guess i'll just have to save up some money and get the digitech one.
would it be good for playing that mad-arse my bloody valentine sound, though?
I see! Well, I've never played with a DigiVerb since I was satisfied with my RV-3 and RV-5. Reverse reverb is cool though, but not necessary for me, I prefer the organic tone of the modulated reverb. But it you wanna go MBV, I'd say; try out the DigiVerb. Also; look around on Harmony Central to see if the reviews from the DigiVerb users can be of use to you.
I also wanted to compare those two. The modulated reverb on the Digitech is too "washy", a bit cheesy you might say.
The reverb level and chorus rate that they have built in the Boss RV5 as a combination is just perfect if you want those amazing long huge Isis- the Gathering reverbs that I am trying to accomplish for such a long time. The other modes are also good for ambient sounds, but only for those - I wouln't use it for other styles, it sounds a bit artificial.
If they modulated reverb on the DigiTech is inferior to that of the RV-5 - then I can stop looking for any comparison since that's the reverb I heavily rely on.
I wouldn't say "inferior", just different. The Boss is just ideal for loooong spacious reverbs. If you find a reverb (a plugin, rackmount or otherwise an advanced one) that you can put the decay setting into almost infinity, then the reverb gets this huge, endless sound. The Boss gets very close to it and that's a major advantage that's not very well known...
If you are looking for something pretty special, choose a specific chorus pedal & put it before a good reverb pedal of your choice...
Well, if you say it's 'too washy' and 'cheesy' - I'd deduct that it's inferior.
I always played around with plugins but I've always noticed that I had major ground loop problems when connecting my souncard to my amp, so I've let that go. Instead I just mix [analog] delay with reverb, still huge.
And yeah, putting chorus before a reverb can be cool too, but definitely nothing like the modulated reverb since it kinda acts like a reverb with a chorus in its FX loop.
Very nice! I heard about it before but never had the chance to HEAR it. I found a great demo on YouTube here by crxshdxmmy. I do miss that 'modulate mode' that's on the RV-5. By far my favorite hardware reverb.
I've heard those are cool too! The verbzilla from Line 6 has this cool 'octo' mode that i wanna check out. Theres always too many pedals i want to buy!
