It works based on the year and its distance, in years, from 1900. It will always work because the last two digits of the year you were born is the distance, in years, from 1900 (e.g. 1989 is 89 years later) and then when you add your age it will work out as the current year in terms of its distance from 1900. So for 2012 it will be 112 when you reach your birthday for this year. Clear? :P

It was just 2011, and the majority of you have not had your birthday yet this year.

For instance, today is 1/7/12. If your birthday is today, and you are 22 today, you were born in 1990. 90+22 is 112 . . . but, since most of your birthdays were in 2011, of course your age and the last 2 digits of your birth year will add up to 2011.
