  • This conductor reminds me of the late George Carlin. If Carlin were alive, and was a conductor, this is exactly how he would conduct this piece.

  • Was that Mr. Bean at 5:44?

  • How sad that some cannot comment on a performance such as this without resorting to profanity to describe it.

  • @101strac How sad that some cannot comment on a comment such as his without resorting to pompousness to reply to it.

  • I AM CUMMING! BEST SONG EVER MADE!

  • SUBLIME

  • pure spanish/argentinian passion 1920s decadence,i fucking love it! top!

  • I love how this piece is basically a 15-minute-long crescendo.

  • 6:55 who knew admiral Akbar was such a good conductor.

  • @hdjama Not being sarcastic, it takes an amazing level of skill to hold a perfect beat for 15 mins.

  • Breathtaking every time I hear it...

  • now that's one conductor I don't want to run into alone in a dark alley...

  • I love this conductor! And I love the way he makes the percussionist important :3

  • the day humanity takes care of all its solvable problems, when we start to behave like equals that we always were, the air itself will sound like this

  • Silencio escucho algo magico por mis audifonos...

  • How is this song so damn good? It's the same thing over and over but somehow the effect is brilliant.

  • @Morfee "Classical dubstep" they call it.

  • Bei 6:20 da geht Christoph richtig ab :):)

  • The way that Eschenbach cues with his eyes is hilarious 0:05 He looks like a startled turtle.

  • Fantastic performance. I'm in awe.

  • this piece is even better when played by all brass instruments.

  • wow it's amazing how the drummer can play for such a long period of time with such less sound reaching it's way to top

  • Conducting with the Dark Side of the Force!!!

  • SILENCE MAGIC IS HAPPENING

    !!!!!!!!LISTEN WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MELODY!!!!!

  • from 0:07 to 0:49, i have to play that for an audition at the University of Illinois, so looking forward to it, btw the guy sounds stupendous, i enjoy the entire piece :)

  • @ionatorthegreat Knock'em dead. Have a great audition!!

  • Very nice job keeping time and not rushing, especially since the conductor is barely conducting.

  • That voldemort guy is getting more and more creeepy! You know, that guy standing looking at the orchestre!

  • Don't piss off the maestro!

  • Directing via ESP?

  • He isn't even conducting for part of the performance lol

  • @PianoMan6302 seriously?!?!?!?

  • great performance and a great orchestra!!!

but at 0:56 voldemort s leading the symphony wtf :D

  • Ravel is just simlply the best!!!!

  • Thank you for posting. I really enjoyed it.

    Aloha from Hawaii.

  • snake charmer music.

  • God this is such a great piece... One of my favorites!!! Awesome...

  • first time listening to that piece ... extroardinary!

  • Jean-Luc Picard conducts

  • can someone give me a list of the instruments as they are introduced in this video

  • @indy4life92 haha im doing a project for the same shit

  • @indy4life92 Would you like to know where you can get a score of this, completely free, and completely legally (as it's public domain)?

  • @LOTRzagorath it's not public domain in the US until 2025, but it is in the EU and Canada.

  • @toastedgingerbread Ah, well pointed out. Thank you

  • I don't see the conducting waving a rod?

  • @waritgreen He doesn't need to. He's so awesome he is a rod (technically speaking, he would be a baton).

  • @waritgreen That's because he's professor X, and can speak to them telepathically.

But seriously, it's a bit like in modern pop/rock music, where the drummer keeps time. I imagine that the same thing is going on here.

  • @waritgreen Because he doesn't need to. The musicians are so skilled that they don't need him to show them the beats and keep them together. The less that the conductor does, the more skilled it means the musicians are.

  • It is very interesting to visit Ravel's house in France, in Montfort l'Amaury (30 miles west of Paris). It hasn't chased since he died.

  • I enjoyed that immensely, many thanks for uploading. Greetings from sunny Jamaica.

  • 6:19 le réveil x)

  • I want to see Bo Derek run just one more time.

  • Ich hasse Eschenbach

  • @googoo0202 Eschenbach is a boring conductor: 1:12-2:12 . And this is conducting?

  • @dvorakslavenskiples /// He's a classical pianist, that's why? The music is in his head and related to the musicians during reherssals. He could leave and the orchestra would continue without a hitch. I seen Zubin, Lenny and many other conductors leave during pieces...just to show off the orchestra's talent. Christoph is worth watching, not for what he is doing......but what he doesn't do..Great lesson.......Maestro James.

  • @affectivedreamer Yes and no, the start is not very good, it takes quite a long time for him to find the flow and lightness in the music. yes: for adding musical energy, listen to 3:14 in this video!

  • @Skoorph nay, playing the snare drum part, either 1st or 2nd is a very very tough job. we have to be ultra concentrated to ourselves -- what the fuxk and mess am i playing -- in order not to get confused between the 2 bars we are playing. once you tried to listen to the orchestra (no matter if you are bored or wanna adjust your dynamics), you got screwed.

  • Nice, bringing snare guy up at the end. That has to be the most grueling job playing that same rhythm the entire time.

  • @clovengoatlord Agreed, the drummer's part is the most grueling. Kudos to the conductor!

I read somewhere Bolero is a piece professional musicians really hate to play because it's so monotonous. That's a shame really because we laypeople love this piece so much. It certainly adds to the joy of listening when I know that the musician loves playing the music at least as much as I love listening to it.

And thank you for pointing out who it was who was given a bow. I was flummoxed.

  • @clovengoatlord Uhh! Can't tell if sarcasm!!!

  • this is majestic, i wish i'd been there... words cant express what it made feel.. this is passion for music... i cant believe there were 9 people saying they didnt like it... they must be nutss.

  • Ravel was a genius!

  • The snare drummer is the real conductor

  • i tried to conduct this piece using my eyebrows to replace my baton....it didn"t work for me.....the i awoke and realized i was only having a dream and wonderful one it was......powerful performance excellent conductor can"t listen to this just once....

  • Yoda is conducting...

  • I cant help but think of Khachaturian influence while listening to Bolero.

  • Just splendid... one of the most beautiful performances I've ever seen... not only because of the (whole) orchestra but also because of the brilliant conducting... I'm just sad I wasn't there... very powerful and emotional... every single time I watch this, it brings me to tears...

  • @affectivedreamer mmm, of course he did, he was the focal piece. he kept everyone on time and he kept the rhythm on track. i'm so impressed he kept the correct tempo throughout the entire piece. sped up when he was supposed to, slowed down, crescendo-ed and pianissimo-ed impressive, really

  • Bolero, otherwise known as the snare drum Concerto.

  • @affectivedreamer The snare with that tissue sounds awful!

  • Simply wonderful performance, and wonderful music in general.

  • Semplicemente capolavoro!

  • love the violins

  • thats a hardcore conducter.

  • The Conductor is Apart of the Xmen

  • just great!!!!!

  • this conductor must have smoked the best weed in all of France... made him think he was part of the audience ...great performance... have to love it... congrats to the strings, the drummer and the saxes

  • that snare drummer has some chops!

  • How were the string players not hitting each other with their bows? What vigorous string plucking! :D

  • Maravilha"

  • 5:34, did a trumpet miss a note?

  • @kschiavo no, it should be a squeeze from a single reed instrument, most likely the Eb clar.

  • I just loved!

  • The drummer is the heart of this orchestra... :D

  • the conductor gave a horrible scary look to the trombonist one second before his solo started.

As one who played this solo in a concert, there is no chance i would manage to play this solo after that glance :)

nevertheless, the trobonist gave a great performance - beautiful sound and style. the bastard made it look easy!

  • 9 people prefer Andre Rieu's version... :)

  • @dusanholy Rieu's version is not performed by a complete orchestra. The performance lacks the dramatic tension, buildup and release that customarily comes at the end. In otherwords, no drama. I will say though that I loved the lush strings in the Reiu performance; but that's pretty much what you would expect since his orchestra is primarily strings and very light on the woodwinds (at least as far as I could see in the clip that I watched here on youtube).

  • The trombonist does barely move his cheeks when taking that c''! Unbelievable!

Great solos from every single instrument and Eschenbach is as wonderful as usual!

Ravel had extraordinairy instrumation skills, and this recording does truly take the piece to the next level!

  • @MrMoiMagnus It's actually a Db 5 that the trombonist is taking.

  • @bbbiggs Oh, sorry. I had another piece in my mind when writing. Db'' i mean... :-)

  • @MrMoiMagnus No prob!! :)

  • I think it's the best piece ever written. It's beautyful. Nowaday nobody can write any better than this. :)

  • Geweldig

  • I love Bolero of Maurice Ravel. This video are very good

  • Ale wariat z tego dyrygenta xd

  • bravo!!! bravo!!!

  • SUBLIME!

A great conductor with a great orchestra!

  • SUBLIME!

  • bravo oboe and English horn!!!!!!!!!!! fantastic!!!!!

  • I think it is too fast, losing the sensuality of the rhythm.

  • Great interpretation! Eschenbach controls the tempo and melody line very well. High qualty !

  • hahà_lEutë_sÚcht_mAl_Ñäch:_olikohle_Àúf_göÓglË_voll_geIl

  • Eschenbach is an amazing, no sweat, conductor... he mostly does it with his stare and yet he's able to bring out the most fabulous sound. BRAVOOO!!!

  • Ooops! that's supposed to be "OR the feel"

  • This craps all over André Rieu's version

  • @englephat Ha, ha, ha..... Rieu certainly doesn't have the temperament of the feel for this, he should just stick to conducting Viennese Waltzes.

  • i´ll say it again,

    dummer's quite handsome too.. :]

  • @omnizm

    Side note: No.

  • ....not to mention that the drummer gradually and flawlessly increases the crescendo over the full piece....

  • ravel was the craziest most rediculous and rambunctious composer ive ever come across! i simply adore ravel

  • @ladymargof

oh, but that's the whole point -- he is! And splendidly at that. :)

  • don't just stand there man! conduct, conduct!

  • imagine playing the same rhythm for like 20 minutes, like the drummer did... OMG! he is amazingly steady! bravo!

    generally, great performance !

  • sOMeone send me the full concert please? or link? x

  • 8 people don't know what real music is.

  • I disagree, I find myself listening to Bolero over and over again. Listening to the different productions by various conducters is even more interesting. Its a great work.

  • Muzyka super, ale trochę dziwny dyrygent...

  • He looks like a dinosaur at 6:55.

  • Very good performance, though--he shows the orchestra a lot of respect by staying out of the way. Another really excellent recording is Charles Dutoit with the Montreal Symphony.

  • This is a masterpiece that reveals the orchestra's ability, and l'orchestra de Paris nails it in the very highest level.

  • What a wonderful composition, and a wonderful performance! Ravel really makes the orchestra dance!

  • I listen to this song at least twice a week thats how much it touched me. To me this song is one of the most amazing and beautiful songs ever made I don't know why its just...awesome you know. I play this on my trumpet, i sing it i hum it. It's part of my life, this is one of the songs that is inspiring me to become a professional musician its truly a very wonder piece of music...and art!

  • Has Orchestre de Paris and Eschenbach recorded this - does anyone know? Thank you.

  • This is the epitome of trust and professionalism. The conductor's role is to guide interpretation during rehearsal and to provide aid as the central set of ears to provide balance during the performance. The musicians already know their parts and can keep time so why have to tell them? He can in only at the end since the crecendo prevents each section from hearing the others so he provides the feedback to bring it home. Well done!

  • I think this is better than Mozart or Beethoven!

  • one word, perfection!

  • How can anyone NOT love this? Amazing!

  • Christoph Eschenbach is an emperor !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much for this piece of art !!!

  • grande musica ! grazie per il video , from italy .

  • All the jokes aside, why isn't the conductor not doing anything? Is this a way of showing off? Anyone know? It's a fascinating piece to listen and watch...

  • @peybak

    Read

lohphat's response. He explains it best.

  • that conductor doesn't even need to use his hands. o_O

  • @ajre82 He only needs to use his eyes XD

  • a great drummer

  • probabely the only piece with special applause for the drummer

  • A very sensuous piece of music, and I am favorably impressed by this orchestra's rendition. I can never listen to the piece without it reviving a mental image of the television advertisement for the film "10" that featured a slow motion film clip of Bo Derek jogging on a deserted beach.

  • @minralb For me the memory is always of ice dancing couple Torvill and Dean at the 1984 Olympics. They scored perfect 6.0s for artistic impression. There's a clip of that performance available on YouTube (though the sound and picture quality is not great). Check it out.

  • I heard on a radio programme years ago that musicians rather dread having to play this piece. It seems that if they get to a bad start, it's very difficult to recover their rhythm as it were.

  • He congratulates the drummer first. Very classy.

  • @noisebloom It's VERY difficult to keep the time as good as this drummer has. Bravo!

  • @noisebloom That is the least he could do,do for a piece like that. The man litterally carries the whole thing for 15 minutes.

    Great performance anyway!

  • congrats to the drummer !
