@waritgreen Because he doesn't need to. The musicians are so skilled that they don't need him to show them the beats and keep them together. The less that the conductor does, the more skilled it means the musicians are.
@dvorakslavenskiples /// He's a classical pianist, that's why? The music is in his head and related to the musicians during reherssals. He could leave and the orchestra would continue without a hitch. I seen Zubin, Lenny and many other conductors leave during pieces...just to show off the orchestra's talent. Christoph is worth watching, not for what he is doing......but what he doesn't do..Great lesson.......Maestro James.
@affectivedreamer Yes and no, the start is not very good, it takes quite a long time for him to find the flow and lightness in the music. yes: for adding musical energy, listen to 3:14 in this video!
@Skoorph nay, playing the snare drum part, either 1st or 2nd is a very very tough job. we have to be ultra concentrated to ourselves -- what the fuxk and mess am i playing -- in order not to get confused between the 2 bars we are playing. once you tried to listen to the orchestra (no matter if you are bored or wanna adjust your dynamics), you got screwed.
@clovengoatlord Agreed, the drummer's part is the most grueling. Kudos to the conductor!
I read somewhere Bolero is a piece professional musicians really hate to play because it's so monotonous. That's a shame really because we laypeople love this piece so much. It certainly adds to the joy of listening when I know that the musician loves playing the music at least as much as I love listening to it.
And thank you for pointing out who it was who was given a bow. I was flummoxed.

I heard on a radio programme years ago that musicians rather dread having to play this piece. It seems that if they get to a bad start, it's very difficult to recover their rhythm as it were.
This conductor reminds me of the late George Carlin. If Carlin were alive, and was a conductor, this is exactly how he would conduct this piece.

@waritgreen That's because he's professor X, and can speak to them telepathically.
But seriously, it's a bit like in modern pop/rock music, where the drummer keeps time. I imagine that the same thing is going on here.

@minralb For me the memory is always of ice dancing couple Torvill and Dean at the 1984 Olympics. They scored perfect 6.0s for artistic impression. There's a clip of that performance available on YouTube (though the sound and picture quality is not great). Check it out.

I heard on a radio programme years ago that musicians rather dread having to play this piece. It seems that if they get to a bad start, it's very difficult to recover their rhythm as it were.

He congratulates the drummer first. Very classy.

@noisebloom It's VERY difficult to keep the time as good as this drummer has. Bravo!

@noisebloom That is the least he could do,do for a piece like that. The man litterally carries the whole thing for 15 minutes.
Great performance anyway!
