  • I had this before this video

  • @Godzillamikey1337 Mister! You forgot to wear your Hipster glasses!

  • Would be great to see this on Desura...

  • what game did you steal the maps from?

  • @boface31 Many maps are original, many are adapted from increpare's "Portile". Should be enough for you to find it on google..

  • @cymonsgames Thank you very much for including linux binaries :)

  • Also, I thought I'd mention I'm gonna try to add Excursion Tunnels, Laser Redirection Cubes, and possibly turrets.

  • @sagenunn This game has returned to active development and will soon see a new release. It's also on github so you can contribute those excursion tunnels, etc. Good luck with that.

  • This is sweet, I always love my favorite games(in this case the best, sorry cod your just no cool anymore). And I am now making a map pack remaking Portal: Flash Version. I release 10 at a time, if anyone is still playing this of course. I do realize it's been around awhile, but I don't care :P

  • Im not trying to troll, but technically thats not ASCII it is Unicode. :) Good job though bro!

  • Nice job dude!

  • SOO... SO FREAKING GODDAMN AWESOME!

  • I would pay for this.

  • I reckon you should go and port this to VAX/VMS.

  • I'm making a mappack (In version 1.2a, is that the latest version?) and so far it's turning out beastly... Why I commented about it is a mystery.

  • @yayyayyay09 You're just teasing me. I would love an excuse to pull this out and dust it off.

  • @cymonsgames Oh, like beta-testing my maps? If not, then I seriously have no idea what you're talking about. Anyways, my map pack has TWO levels! IT'S SO AMAZING!!! Heh, I'm not done with it, but if you want me to upload my text files so you can download them then I will. I like sharing custom maps for lots of stuff. Just give me a day or two and I'll get about 20 levels in the map pack.

  • @yayyayyay09 My forums is the best place for uploading 2 or 20 maps. Everyone can find them there. Contact me if you have any trouble with it.

  • @cymonsgames That's what she said

  • you still looking for beta testers or are you done with that?

  • @serviceman613 Games been out for a year, man. One day I'll start work on AP2, but for now I have to finish my latest game: Tricule.

  • Would it be possible to make this same game in Notepad??

  • @Soru135 I assume you're joking about the text graphics, but I'm going to take you serious for the LOLZ.

For a code editor Notepad works just fine, tho I prefer Notepad++. You just have to get used to compiling on the command line. But personally I prefer a more robust IDE like Code::Blocks or eclipse.

If you're laughing at that you're geekier than I am.

  • Super rad!! By the way, the math geek is here to tell you that it's actually base 4 (digits 0,1,2,3) and counts to 333 (decimal 63).

  • its not a very good game.

    BUT ITS SWEET!

  • why not just use text2speech for glados' voice?

  • Ahh this reminds me my child hood

Good Old Classic 8 color games and stuff like that :3

  • lol whats actll portal?

  • My brain!!

  • this...sucks...but is curious its like an atari 2600 game

  • You sound like Sam Rockwell - Nice video :)

  • @ForgeOfIntelligence Guy Fleegman FTW!

  • Really fun game! Really makes you think outside the box

  • Im getting

    /usr/bin/asciiportal: line 3: 15773 Floating point exception./asciiportal $*

all the time if i try to run it.

    $ uname -rm

    2.6.32-ARCH x86_64

  • @iHateToRegister Hmm, linux version? 64 bit of 32 bit? What version? Did you compile it yourself or use the precompiled binaries on the site? Have you tried the windows version through WINE?

In other words, not a lot of information you're giving me here.

  • Linux version is 64 bit (as stated in uname -r, kernel version dito). I used the version available from cymonsgames . com / games / asciiportal / asciiportal1.2c-src.zip and compiled it by myself.

I am not willing to use Wine, because i have a 64 bits Linux machine and i do not want to execute 32 bits WIndows programs.

  • @cymonsgames Arch has rolling releases, so there is no version number, like for Ubuntu. And, he said that he uses the 64-bit version (x86_64).

  • So can I play this on MS-DOS or a commodore 64?

  • @Compgenius999 MS-DOS, maybe. C64, you'll have to find a C compiler for the C64, and if you do I make no guarantees at the speed it'll run. Heh.

  • And I thought my ascii space invaderish game was difficult... I really need to have a look at that source code, quite an inspiring effort. Nice one.

  • Gladice, haha. GLaDOS

  • amazing!

  • wow this is amazing. can i ask what language its programmed in?

  • @batch09master C++. The source code is actually available with the game. Download link in the description.

  • @cymonsgames yay C++ is the one :P i just made a lemmings copy in ascii this has realy opend some ideas alot :)

  • awesome, i'll try to compile under linux :)

  • creepye

  • IS THERE CAKE IN THIS ONE!?

  • Haha this is ingenious!

  • no i dont play DnD EVERY weekend... lol

  • LOL! The counting machine was awesome!

  • awesome

  • Fantastic!

    This really cool, man.

    Thank you.

  • 3:56 lol uhh.. erm.. Sounds like the/that teacher thing from the cartoon "Snoopy" wtf...

  • peanuts is the real name to that cartoon. and yes adults have that wonka wonka type voice

  • brilliant! absolutely brilliant!

  • wow, insane!

    You're a genius, sir!

  • This is a triumph

  • I like your enthusiam. Will give this a try.

  • Base four.

  • Unbelievable thinking skill transforming this game to ascii!

  • Bravo, Sir!

  • Awesome. You are awesome.

  • This is absolutely insane. Btw funny shpeaking :)

  • You HAVE to put that on Kongregate(.com)! :D

  • LOL

"It's not that hard- oops I died. Oops I died again"

  • This is really very cool. It is nice to see people who appreciate where we have come from in the world of video games. It's great that you are encouraging younger game players to use their imagination with ascii graphics. Keep up the good work.

  • Cant wait.

  • Holy crap, I did a mini-freakout at the end. My sister's name is Erin and our last name is Robison, but everybody gets it wrong and pronounces it Robinson.

For one crazy moment, I thought he was talking about her. -.-

  • Amazing!

  • Damn, this looks cool. Another person eagerly waiting for a release.

  • man this is amazing i cant wait for a release

  • You sir, win the interwebs.

  • Great work. I love your enthusiasm.

  • I look forward to playing this. I have a feeling it will find a nice nook next to Nethack in my game library.

  • This looks really awesome I can't wait to try it.

    Is this version downloadable?

  • fucking awesome

  • Can't wait for the game.

  • I like the idea ofthe colored outlines for the portals, it was real difficult to tell where the portal world was and the normal world was without it.

no so much the full shading of the portal area (0:47)
