i think fergie sees gaitan as a replacement for ryan giggs. he is left-footed, bags of pace, loves to dribble and has a fierce shot on him. very giggs-esque. united have 3 good wingers (nani, valencia, young), but with giggs retiring, and the possibility of injuries to our wingers, gaitan could be a valuable signing.
remember, in the champions league, gaitan really shone above other players. this was also the case in 2004 when man united vs lisbon in the champions league - and united got ronaldo
firstly, you forget that jones and carrick are both excellent midfielders. carrick is extremely underrated and united fans don't understand how important he is. jones has been a revelation, very versatile. anderson & cleverley are both injured, but are a terrific partnership. very creative and direct (their partnership help united beat barcelona in the off-season) and fletcher is also injured.
when we have cleverley & anderson back, we'll be back to our 21-goals-in-5-games ways!

@MegaSlayerr You're right, we need experience. In Fergie's 4-4-2 system, we have 2 central mids. One is cautious and defensive, the other is more creative. Look at Keane/Scholes for example. People think Carrick isn't creative enough. But he's not that kind of midfielder. He breaks up play and is vital in shielding our backline. He's overlooked and underrated. He provides experience and discipline. There's no reason Cleverley can't be a first-team player. People doubted Scholes in the early 90s.
@MegaSlayerr Cleverley provides creativity down the middle like Scholes used to. He's also a very mobile player, never stands still. I don't think it's as important for the creative midfielder to be as experienced as the defensive midfielder. As long as he has a good understanding of the game and good energy. I personally think Cleverley was our best player starting this season. When he played, we a) beat Barca in Summer and b) scored 21 goals in 5 games. Now we only have wingers for creativity.

Thats a bit harsh though, who would of said chicha was united quality ? Ronaldo when he was 17 ? Nani ? jones ? charlton ? etc etc, we make them into united quality.
