  • @addyginsh

well he hasnt raced again and it wouldnt suprise me if he never ran again. it was simply a complete fluke of a performance that happens in sport from time to time (todd hamilton winning 2004 british open springs to mind).

i would be amazed if the winner re-produced or came anywhere near this form if he runs again.

  • If Murtagh had been on Starspangledbanner at Haydock for the Betfred Sprint Cup instead of Colm O'Donahue. Starspangledbanner would've finished better than 5th, IMO. Murtagh knows Starspangledbanner has to be held off the pace. Then turned loose with one big late burst. Even here in the Nunthorpe, a furlong shorter than the Betfred Sprint Cup, Murtagh came from off of the pace, and still passed all but one. At Haydock, O'Donahue took SSB to the front. Which caused him to fade. A big mistake IMO

  • Of all the races I've seen of Starspangledbanner. His win in the 2009 Caufield Guineas over a mile is the most impressive. IMO. He ran a mile like he was in a 5 or 6 furlong sprint. He burst out of the gate. Went straight to the lead, and never looked back. One of the most impressive mile races I've seen. Makes me wonder how he'd fare against horses like Canford Cliffs, Dick Turpin, Paco Boy, or Goldikova at a mile. The race is on YouTube for all to see. 2009 Caufield Guineas.

  • @GBeret83 You may be pleased to know that we have another outstanding sprinter many consider may become the next Manikato, the greatest sprinter ever to race in OZ. The horse is Hay List. He currently rates about where Sacred Kingdom is at present, a little below that horse's greatest ratings. He will meet an unbeaten filly, Black Caviar, at his next start. They are the new generation. According to connections, Hay List will, if he holds together, go to Ascot next year.

  • Starspangledbanner got a long way back and simply failed to catch Soul Power, which was on the pace. Had he been bustled along earlier, got a bit closer, he may have won the race. He is being prepared for longer distances and getting close to the end of his campaign. That makes it hard to ping in these short races. You can't take anything away from the winner, though. He is very fast, and beat a top class field.

  • Five furlongs may be just a bit too short of a distance for Starspangledbanner, IMO. He's definitely looked far more impressive in Great Britain at 6 furlongs in the Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Darley July Cup. Maybe Starspangledbanner should have skipped the Nunthorpe Stakes, and shipped to France for the Prix Maurice de Gheest at 6-1/2 furlongs that was just recently raced? I would've liked to have seen him at that distance against Regal Parade, Joanna, and High Standing.

  • how did that monkey sole power manage to win. it was a complete and utter fluke.

did sole power deserve to win on the day? yes.

will he reproduce this form again?? i would say almost certainly not.

  • i hope to see one of those horses in the breeders cup world tour this year, and with their riders.

  • That has to be the longest priced winner ever in a race and for once, Borderlescott does not finish in the top three. Bit of a surprise for me.

  • I was a bit surprised. Starspangledbanner being out-sprinted by 100-1 shot, Soul Power. I thought if he was even beaten at all? It would likely be to Equiano or possibly Borderlescott. I think it's awesome though that Starspangledbanner has enough confidence in his run that he laid off of the pace like he was in a 10 furlong race. Not a 5 furlong sprint race. LOL. Most 5 furlong sprints, the horses go wide open for those 5 furlongs. Kind of an odd strategy by Starspangledbanner for 5 furlongs.

  • @GBeret83 Starspangled isn't an 1000m horse, he was outsprinted in the Lightning Stakes over here as well, he is better suited to tough 1200m contests, and shown here that he runs a mile out just as good as anyone

  • @TheDLPVideos, I've seen the replays of his wins in the Caufield Guineas and the Oakleigh Plate when he was still in Australia. He looked extremely impressive in the Caufield Guineas, I thought. He's looked good at 6 furlongs in the Golden Jubilee Stakes and the Darley July Cup. Although he had to work a bit harder at Newmarket, I thought. Equiano ran a mighty race himself in the July Cup. I still think he's one of the best 6 furlong sprinters in the world right now. 5 furlongs may be too short?

  • @GBeret83 He ruined the guineas, absolutely ran them ragged. Everyone, including myself, felt that he wouldn't run out a strong mile. Subsequently a brilliant horse went out at 10-1 or maybe even more. He was a top 2yo, trained on at 3 to win the guineas, then next prep won the Oakleigh Plate over 5.5f over older horses before going to O'Brien. Incidentally, O'Brien has never had a horse so fast. Starspangledbanners trackwork left him stunned.

  • @GBeret83 Yeah 1000m is just a tad to short, he can be outsprinted but if the race is a street fight he can lift himself to win the race, his Plate win was like that, very good indeed.. Hope he get to the mile this campaign, as Scenic Blast is doing in America, both very good horses.
