I built one of those things by my self outside my house in a pile left by the snowplow. However, I always make them too small... and my best one got ruined by a sudden burst of warm weather a few weeks ago.
Can you make the walls thinner? I'm so afraid of all that snow collapsing on top of me.
great vid guys i enjoyed the science behind the crystalization stuff. I would love to do something like this since it is easily doable in a day thanks for the info
This is what I do Pile a bunch of snow on the ground find out how large my group is and make the igglo about 2x bigger for extra comfert after you make the quinzhee shape wait about 3 hours or 2 for it to freeze fine all the holes in it and put soft snow on it to make it stronger then put one person in the hole to dig it while other people find sticks and one person digs all the snow with a shovel and puts it on the quinzhee after about 5 hours about hard work your done!
great question, and the short answer is I don't know, but more acurately, the inside warms up, then freezes and I guess by morning, its a layer of ICE. but whats cool is it doesn't rain, or even get wet inside, its just very comfortable and quiet.
I think to get more specific, we would need another video... and Bill Nigh the science guy!
OMG I am cold watching this ... looks like if I get stuck outside I'm going to need him there so I have shelter. Cool site. My friends told me to check it out. Hope you add some more of cold survival since I live in the cold and don't know a thing except stay inside until it melts.
This is amazingly funny. (well and informative) I used to live in Alaska and sure felt like smashing snow..to get OUT of my tent. LOL I am thinking that the guy in "The Wild" shouldve known a few extra tips such as this. Looks like it's warmer than the bus was :( Now will you also be making a comparison video to show the difference between Alaskan Igloos and Michigan Quinzees? I'd like to see that.
In addition to MyNorth Music, I hope to lead a series of outdoors fun and survival videos... yes, totally like Man Vs Wild. Let me know if you like the idea!
I very much like the idea, and since it is snowing yet again today APRIL 20th!) Good to re-watch incase the heat goes out. Definately more info on all types of different survival tips in all aspects would be great!!!!!
Great video, i i heard that puting a couple candles in your quinzee will make your Quinzee even warmer !

HALF AN HOUR? You need AT LEAST 3 hours for it to settle.

if it warms up above freezing in a quinze what keeps it from melting over night.
