lmao. can't get them much faster than that. What a ride it must be for the driver doing a 360 flip and then landing looking the same direction you were before it took flight
In essence, yes. When cars are travelling at such high speeds they take on characteristics of an aeroplane and take off if there is insufficient downforce at the front of the car.
good point, also these are at road atlanta BEFORE the track was paved. I was at this race in 2004 when the last wreck happend. there is a small hill and the car has negative G's on it so air gets underneath and it gets airborn
There is also the matter that some of these cars were drafting. Drafting takes the aerodynamic downforce off of the car, make it lighter. It was just enough to lift the front a tiny amount and let air underneath.
Exactly. Were that car not in front, the car that was behind would have had sufficient downforce to keep it glued to the road. Instead the lack of air flow on the spoilers made the car lighter.
Not to mention, that as they draft, when the are pulling out to pass, the low pressure zone that was in the front of the car, allowing it to actually raise a little, gets air tto go under the car, raising it up. they said that was the problem with the one Mercedez when it was behind the Toyota TS020, and the BMW V12 LMR.
The engineers at Porsche and Mercedes are secretly engaged in a duel with eachother.
They feeling that merely winning races has become to common and monotonous. They're currently trying to outdo eachother in engineering the best "flying" automobiles.
Yea, I think so too. When the car is on the grass you can see some features that resemble the V12 LM. This is the only footage I've ever seen of the BMW.

@njcrox lol he must not have gotten very good training in flight school. it almost looked like a glitch you'd see in a video game

that was before they did wind tunel testing, i bet those were probably really un aerodynamic, and had more lift than downforce

Mario Andretti did this in an INDY car. He decided to come out of retirement. He went back into retirement the same day.
He flipped 3 or 4 times about 40 feet in the air-landed on his wheels-AWESOME
Look up :"Mario Andretti Flip Indy 2003"

Mercedes team had two flips in the same week end at Le Mans as far as I recall.
I guess that one of the drivers was Mark Webber.

So in general, the front car's slipstream / turbulence play a decisive role in these accidents?
Me7roiD 3 years ago
Exactly. Were that car not in front, the car that was behind would have had sufficient downforce to keep it glued to the road. Instead the lack of air flow on the spoilers made the car lighter.

Actually, the first two flips were from a event Called "Petit Le Man" at a track called Road Atlanta, not Le Mans. The CLR flip was at Le mans.

The second crash, that starts at 0:09, is that the BMW V12 LM?

I think so, yes. Cos that was the other key incident of this type, along with the Porsche and Mercedes. Plus it looks like it..
