  • Thanks for watching. So glad you liked the video. The lathe I have is a laguna 18/47. Runs on 220 current but may be configured for 110. 2HP Variable speed motor with reverse. Outboard turning by sliding the headstock all the way to the right end of the lathe (requires tool rest kit). two speed and torque ranges with belt/pulley changes. For more information go to "Laguna tools" website and download the 18/47 manual. BTW Grizzly sells the same lathe for the same price with the Grizzly logo.

  • Great Video!!! Quick Question - What is brand andmodel lathe are you using?

  • WHAT SIZE IS THE DETAIL SPINDLE GOUGE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

  • @1100BIGGIES It's in the video @ 4:40

  • I just subscribed to your videos... they are pleasing and educational. I saw you with Carl a while back... that was fun... and, oh, yah...I am a guy!

Your turning of this little box was terrific. I've got to learn how to turn without catching my tools everytime they touch the wood.... you know, leaving huge gouges deep and across the whole piece of wood...........!!!!! (*&&^^%%&^&&*%%$%***(^&^$!!!!!!!!

So, keep up the good work....I look forward to your other videos!!!!! swalker

  • Love your humour .. nicely presented video.

  • like the info

  • Love the color on that wood, great job on that box.

  • cracking video good laugh brill

  • Wow what a nice piece of art work. Plus, Carl has been known to give out some cool pieces of wood. Very nice.

  • Very nice work i want to add a lathe to my shop but the tooling is something in not sure of any suggestions on what to get started with

  • @customcutting213 It really depends on what you want to do, If you want to do basically everything you can, as far as tools, A skew or 2 (different sizes, different size spindle gouges a scraper or 2 for projects like this one and bowl gouges again different sizes would be what I would suggest. Yea I know you wanted Guy to answer. but I figured I'd give my 2 cents too. :)

  • @customcutting213 Hey Man, sorry about the delay in getting back to you about lathe tools. I started with—an 1/8th in. Parting Tool—a 3/4 in. Roughing Gouge—a 3/8 in. Spindle Gouge—a 3/4 in. Skew Chisel—a 1/2 in. Bowl Gouge—a 1/2 in. Round-Nose Scraper—a 3/4 Box Tool. This makes (in my opinion) an excellent set. By the time you are proficient with these tools you will already know what you want next.

  • Thanks for responding to my comment. Just to let you know, I am a women. Should have signed my name to give you a fighting chance. I will keep watching your videos with great interest.......Deb

  • @windsor927 Please forgive me. "Blush", LOL. Sorry about that, Deb. That was a terrible thing of me to assume. According to my stats, I only have a 7.5% female viewing audience. I would like to see more women get involved in woodworking.

  • verry beautiful!

  • Yo Guy, I had to add another post the changes you made to the box top were a great improvment to the overall design of the jar (box) whatever you call it BTW did you ever convert that cupboard under you tablesaw to slideing tray shalves just wondering about it thought you might check out the draw slides at Grizzly the price and quality can't be beat and the service is top notch (in my homble opion) thanks again for the great videos you do I have learned some real good stuff fom ya Frank

  • @kipperdude1 Well, I move kind of slow these days, but I am making progress. I recently got the wood for it. now I need to get be a good set of full extension drawer glides. There are a lot of days I cant do anything. Car accident, two back surgeries, bad neck injury (no surgeon will operate for fear of paralysis), head injury (30 days in the hospital with no memory). This all happened about three years ago, and I still can't be on my feet more than approximately 2 hours at-a-time.

  • Hey there Guy, another great vedio as the others said great camera angles your a real teacher about how to do it. I was wondering who made the chuck you are using I'll wager a block of real nice piece of maple that it's Grizzly if I lose sed me info at fddbowler at yahoo so I can pay up

  • Great looking box Guy, I'm glad it didn't come apart on you.

  • He who dares wins! Great work guy!

  • Great video. I particularly like the camera angles you use. I can clearly see your angle of attack with the tools as well as the tool rest alignment. It's not always clear on other videos I've seen.

  • Guy goto your local Wal-mart and purchase a roll of rubber matting that they have, you will find it over in the area w/ the dish drainers.

It works great for holding things in your scroll chuck w/o damaging the projects.

  • awesome project, some beautiful wood you got there, and a happy new year.

  • Guy i would have said for the 1st pass to fill those cracks using thin CA, then use Tight Bond lll to finish it up

  • @BrushCountryJamboree Damn, Dude, where are you when I need you? Excellent advice. I have the glue and more of the same wood. Thanks

  • Great video Guy, And great looking box.

  • Very nice box and a stunning piece of wood. Keep up the nice work.

  • That is amazing and well worth the time. I just retired and have started to put together a woodworking shop and after seeing what you can do I am looking at wood turning in a whole new light. Thanks for the video.

  • @windsor927 Well sir. It feels good to be an inspiration. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.

  • Hey Guy, That did come out good. I tried the same thing with a dogwood root. It came out okay, but the wood was real punky in some areas which gave me problems. It's nicely spalted but doesn't have the nice knots and swirly grain that your piece has.

I wish you and your family a very Happy New Year. Take care and I'll be watching next year.

    Larry

  • @Larenzoid Thanks Larry. Be safe and Happy New Year, right back at you!

  • that turned out beautiful! amazing. thanks, gregg

  • @truckpipe Thanks Gregg. Many thanks for watching. So glad you enjoyed.

  • HI guy that was a real nice box that you made

I have just put up a video on box making I hope you drop in and comment on it

    happy turning

    Robbie

  • nice box! I am right there with you on the shaking bit...it can take me 30 secs to turn a page, if I care how many pages I am trying to turn!

  • very nice box and yes i use THE MAGIC ALSO.

  • Really beautiful box Guy.

  • Nice job Guy.

  • very nice box, great looking wood. I work with a lot of wood with cracks and voids you could use some thin c a glue in the cracks it works great for me and you don't have to wait so long to keep turning like when you use wood glue, just a thought.

I wish Carl would visit my shop and leave me some of that wood LOL.

  • Thats a nice piece of wood, I like the top on it also.

So you have the paste wax and mineral oil this week, will you be just finishing up with the 600 next week?

    Take it easy, Doc.

  • Well, I am impressed! Had I been beside you as you roughed the blank down I would have been the Prophet Of Doom telling you you were wasting your time and would never get anything out of that wood. How wrong would I have been? Great job and you have inspired me to keep going in the face of imminent disaster because you have proved it is well worth the effort.

    Best Wishes, Brendan.
