It's hard to do a word-for-word translation from Sanskrit to English. As a name, Mangalam means 'auspicious'. Mangalam is one of the names of Vishnu. It is also a city in India. But the translation for this song is: "May there be tranquility on earth, on water, in fire, in the wind, in the sky, in the sun, on the moon, on our plant, in all living beings, in the body, in the mind and in the spirit. May that tranquility be everywhere, and in everyone." Hope this answers your question.
These vedic chants are as pure as honey as pure as morning dew.
My soul starts dancing when i listen to these sanskrit shlok's and with each word of it, it really feels like my soul, body, mind and everything that is described here in sanskrit is getting purified.
The only music I've ever listened to that shook me to my core. I had a very deep feeling of connection of living in India years ago, being crippled as a small child in a life where a mother's love and devotion was all I ever knew - but that seed of love was so deep it became a gift that could never go away and is the deepest root of love that I still carry today and can never lose, ever. - It really came very fast and very strong - unexpected and overwhelming. I cried with a feeling of gratitude
This chants connect with every divine being in the whole cosmos, it touchs the most unadulterated in your self and elevate to the bottomless of existence.
I love this CD!!! I lost mine years ago :( Still have the case..... just in case it turns up somewhere. I think I'll buy it again as I used to listen to it all the time and really miss it. Thanks for posting this!!
This is really nice... does anyone know what instrument makes that drippy drum sound? Hard to explain.. it's a sound I really like. I am just assuming it is a drum, so forgive me - as I have no idea what I'm talking about. I first heard this instrument in Beatles songs around the time when George was first studying with Ravi Shankar.
@artsyfartsyme Contrary to what another poster has written, that drum is not a tabla (which is usually one of a pair of drums, along with the rounded, deep-toned baaya). The tabla surely did not exist until early modern times. The instrumentation on this album is more historically appropriate, I believe, and the percussion sounds more like a mridangam or pakhaawaj. Each of these is a long single drum with a skin on either side (bass played with the left hand, and treble with the right).
@DZAHER It's in Sanskrit. Mangalam = beautiful, blessed. Bhoomi = earth. Udhaka = (I don't know). Agni = fire. Vaayu = wind. Gagana = sky. Soorya = sun (Ravi also means sun, BTW). Chandra = moon. Jagat = universe. Jeeva = life. Deha = body. Man = mind. Aatma = soul. Sarva = all. Bhavatu = may it be (i.e. may everything be blessed).
@kearyjones Laughed the Moon... But for when Water became the Earth.. The wind... Took it back. Then the angel of creation came to me. In a dream, within a dream. And with her sword of Fire, showed me the way...
To Jim Morrison's grave. Where he not lay. For the true legends never die...
@kearyjones : Without Mushrooms and LSD, This is more transcendental coz the chants take their natural way to the soul and it makes one feel pure and elevated in conscience .. With Mushrooms and LSD, its essence and purity is lost ! Just the air we breathe is enough to make us high while listening to such powerful chants !
EH? How nice for you, that you're able to use this medium to tell the rest of us how much this medium sucks. How nice to see that good old-fashioned hypocrisy isn't dead, or unique to a particular area of the map. What, exactly, is your definition of "western" culture? Or do they all look alike? And what's your definition of "rape"? Last time I checked, it didn't consist of giving a talented artist a means by which to expand an appreciative circle of listeners.
@kearyjones you know what would be better? if you stopped taking this music as a transcendental music you listen to when you're trippin and wastin your brain and understand the true sense behind the chant.
Respond to this video... I hope you dont find this offensive but I just got off work and began to smoke (Taylor gang or die) and turned on a Beatles mix to chill than this came on. Just wantin to say I'm exploring this and it is a very positive sound, Im digging it.
