Mr. Malarchuk kept a very cool head through this. He didn't panic and neither did the trainer who came to his aid. His teammates, on the other hand, had no clue of what to do and could only stand there with their mouths agape. My hat is off to Mr. Malarchuk and the trainer who helped him!
A St. Louis Blues player brings the trainer over from the Sabres bench @ 0:34.
Very frightening moment; and if it wasn't bad enough, if not tragic enough, if not enough people were already feeling queasy and in shock... Kenny G starts playing @ 2:06!
Am I the only one who thinks its badass that while all that is going on Malarchuk knocks his glove out of the way so his blood won't get on it? 0:30 mark
The trainer who rushes out to the goalie is my uncle, Jim Pizzutelli. He was able to save the goalies life by jamming a towel into the cut, and pinching the artery shut. The hole in his neck was so big, my uncle's fist fit in it. The goalie survived with several hundred stitches. I have met him personally several time. He still has a scar from just behind his right ear, down to the front of his windpipe. The cut was caused by the skate of the attacking player as he was upended by the defenseman
You can tell your uncle that a man in denmark thinks he is a true hero :).
Have you by any chance been told by your uncle what happened and how he felt about it?, could be interesting to add that to this amazing video of courage and fortune (fortune that he was present and courage because...well the video speaks for itself).
@tpizzutelli I believe that gash was that big. what your uncle did was fast and absolutely amazing. If it wasn't for his quick action to the ice I don't think Malarchuk would be here today.
that medic is a goddamned hero. given the good mind to be on the ice seemingly before anyone even motioned for him. or if i'm mistaken, he's still pretty dang light on his feet.
@tarsen1012 he is a former army medic. thank God that man was at the game that night. i doubt some of the other medics would have known quite what to do to keep him from dying on the spot.
You cant pay a person enough to go through what YOU just went through??? Try being Malarchuk you fuckin whore cum stain! Unreal he said that. God bless Malarchuk, and again, we were all in the moment but to be a commentator and say something like that?? the guys being paid compared to what you watched? as to what they get paid suffering accidents like this??
@zombieman82091 "You cant pay a person enough money to go through what I just watched." He meant you cant pay an athlete enough for that to happen to them.
@christytina81 Well, don't you think it's a bit of a difference to watch it through a computer or a TV screen, than to actually be there and watch it as it happened?
the poor guy survived a self inflicted gun shot too...it's not known whether it was intentional or not, but the cops classified it as accidental under suspicious circumstances.
The man who saved him was a trainer or paramedic? Either way...he is damn fortunate the guy was there. Scary! Did he pull out a bandage, or was that a glove? I couldn't tell.
I was at this game, we had seats in the blues, it was right in front of us. My dad took me for my birthday. And over 20 years later I took my son to a game for his birthday and Zednik from the Florida Panthers got his throat cut. Freaky!
The Medic on duty that game was a Vietnam War medic veteran. After he got on the ice he put gloves on fast and stuck his finger in his jugular vein. Malarchuk lost 1 quarter of his blodd in 5 seconds. The medic stopped the blood flow from increasing any more. He could've died in a matter of a few more seconds. He is a very lucky man.
@HARTPOINTER1 It couldn't have been one quarter of his blood that quickly. Humans have 5 liters of blood, and you would need to lose about 2 liters to be at risk of death.
I don't see how it could have been a skate that did this. In the clip not once do you ever see either of those players skates come anywhere remotely close to his neck.
@BruinsBrawler603 not from this angle no, but one of the camera's caught it. the player fell forward into Malarchuk, and as he was falling, his leg went up and his skate caught Malarchuk in the throat.. besides, what else would have been sharp enough to cut someone's throat?
he actually did himself a favor. When he stuck his finger in his cut he actually put it on the right spot to stem the flow of blood. I am told your biggest worry is if it is a clean cut all the way through and the aorta receeds and you can't find the end. For all the people with the idiotic comments.... really?!!
@SirFrankoman ??? That's the original footage, you dumbass. That wasn't necessarily the camera angle aired on the TV and they made a break, that's why you hear the whole ''Buick thing''!
Well actually it brings blood out of the brain but close. The reason he lived was because of the trainer. In like 8 seconds the trainer was out with him and reached into his neck to pinch off the vein. I believe the trainer was a Vietnam War vet not sure though. But he saved a professional atheltes life on National TV so good for him.
What actually saved him is that it was his outter jugular artery, meaning the ones that takes the blood that's been to the brain already. If it had been the one that brings blood TO the brain, he most likely would have died on the spot.
dude you must be dying for people to know about your situation...i just came to all three videos for the different angles and you have the same sentance posted on all videos.
Surviving I can sort of see because help got there fast, but how the hell he didn't pass out is beyond me. I give blood fast, I filled up however much they have you fill in like 4 minutes and passed out. dude had to lose a pint in about 4 seconds.
@AEMoreira81 not the medic, it was the trainer. he was a vietnam vet and knew what to do (he pinched the carotid artery together until the team doctors began suturing the wound)
@AEMoreira81 But all i can say, it took 7secs from that medic to come there and help, fast huh??? Very fast and you are talking about ice under your feet there :D
@spxlazy because had he been at the other side of the ice he would have had to be skated all the way to the other side and in that extra 10 seconds before getting to the medic he would probably have bleed to death.

no he saved his own life, when he reached up with his hand to cover his cut, he accidentally stuck his finger in there and blocked the vein from bleeing out saving himself, pure but good accident
No he didn't he just put his hand up. The team athetic trainer got out there and reached in and pinched off his artery. If you just got your Carotid Artery cut like that just blocking it ain't gonna help the blood will just go around the blockage
dude, go read the article, the doctors who operated on him said exactly what i said is what he did to himself, even on the interview later on with him the doctors explain the same as well.
You can't stop a cut that fast, even a small cut... the Gauze would have helped clot the blood in his neck followed by stitches and more gauze. If you don't believe me just try cutting your own leg half a centimeter deep then put your hand on it to stop it for 10 seconds, and see if it's stopped... or if you use common sense and realize that you can't stop bleeding with a hand like that..........
Apparently, the trainer was a medic during Nam, and he reached into the wound, and clamped the severed artery with his bare hands, until the docs/medics could start sealing up the cut...
That's pretty funny when the commercial came on, and then they're playing Kenny G on the speaker when they come back!!!!!!!hahahahahahah, great video though. Never seen this angle of the incident before thanks
That trainer was a vietnam medic. And thank the fucking lord he became a Buffalo Sabres medical man. Its funny how Clint Malarchuk makes jokes about this happening. This is why i wear a neck guard when i play goalie.
Mr. Malarchuk kept a very cool head through this. He didn't panic and neither did the trainer who came to his aid. His teammates, on the other hand, had no clue of what to do and could only stand there with their mouths agape. My hat is off to Mr. Malarchuk and the trainer who helped him!

i feel bad for the guy who cut him!! And of course the goalie.
imagine if you cut him, and you were watching him bleed a pool. you would probably never live that down.

That wasn't Steve Tuttle's fault...if you look at angle # 2, you can clearly see Uwe Krupp shove Tuttle into Malarchuk.

it wans't like he was trying to kill him, he was prob just trying to draw a penalty, but it went a bit wrong.

the other, overlooked hero in this video is that player that helps bring the trainer to clint.

That trainer was a vietnam medic. And thank the fucking lord he became a Buffalo Sabres medical man. Its funny how Clint Malarchuk makes jokes about this happening. This is why i wear a neck guard when i play goalie.

the trainer took a knee into his blood

The trainer reached into his throat and pinched off his carotid artery. Otherwise he would have died in a few minutes.

Yahhh, on Sports Science they said it was his juglalur vain (or however u spell it, i'm only 11) and he would have died in about 14.5 seconds
