IMO, the reason why those verses sound "different" is because there's only one snare drum on the fourth quarter note, instead of two of them (on the second and the fourth quarter note, as usual). This makes them a bit "draggy". Good idea!

It's probably because the verses use different scales than the standard scales you hear in every song on the radio. That's why they are on the radio because they sound natural to the human ear.

I do it almost always myself as well, but this time I decided to do something different. You tend to hear similar scales being used in music like black/dark metal. It brings a more wicked feel to it. I always like it when things get wicked :)
