@MrNoala actually the proper term for that maneuver is an "aileron roll" a barrel roll is a Much larger "cockpit inward" type of circular climb /descent ( Much slower and a huge broad movement of the craft ) think of it as a LOONG right or left turn with some climb added to change your X , Y ,AND Z zxis.
A quick aileron roll is a good way to get parts of your craft AWAY from incoming projectiles and induce vomiting by g force, while a barrel roll is just a great way to show off.
I agree with all the comment on here. It is immense and sets that tone of whats to follow. Legendary game! Still my faver shooter of it's kind. Yet to play TH5 or 6. I prefer these graphics to the newer polygon style of TH5 and 6.
Yes, great intro to a great game. I have this game emulated on my Nokia N95 and I'm not ashamed to say I have only ever seen the first 4 stages, its friken hard that game, but way ahead of its time, oh and the stage music -Amazing
It Really is great, its an emulator called Picodrive s60 and it runs all Genesis games full speed with sound, Shadow Dancer, Sonic and VEctor Man also look great. Phone is an N95, so if you ever get a Nokia give it a go
I only beat this once out the...100 plays. Wandafu tiems.

If you haven't already, check out the Sharp X68000 version of Thunder Force II, it's much better than the Megadrive-Genesis version.
For those who don't know, X68000 was an extremely high-end 16-bit computer in Japan, kind of the Japanese equivalent of Amiga, but even more powerful.
Thunder Force II was first created for the X68000 in 1988, and only then ported, in downgraded form, to the MD/Genesis in 1989.
