Depends if you're talking specifically to me or not. In theory, anything can be made out of duct tape, but not all of it will work as the original does.
Man, the armor set itself is two years old now. It's rather wrinkly now. It seems like you've been reading something about armor. Eventually, someday, I plan on making some better armor, as an on-line friend of mine encourages me to do.
@TogrutaJedi Yea, me and my brother have been trying to make some or about a year and a half now. OUr new attempt, which should work, is we're going to make a vacuum forming machine, which is a cheap way to make plastic armor! I really do like the duct tape idea, I'm trying to make a Batgirl mask out of duct tape lol
As very vaguely explained in the video, I made my 3-D duct tape forms by making paper templates that could be flexed to the desired 3-D forms and then tracing it out on to a duct tape sheet, which is then cut out. It can take a while to get the template right, but then it's easier afterward. It may be easier to make that mast in multiple pieces that are attached together.
@TogrutaJedi That's a great idea! Orignally i put a ziploc bag over my face and taped around it to get my head shape, I warn you, it's EXTREMELY hot and sweaty lol
How did you use sunglasses to make the T-visor? Do you somehow fuse the lenses together, or. . . It's just a little fuzzy to me. By the way, thanks for making this video! I'm building my own set of duct tape armor thanks to you!
The sunglasses I used were some cheapo party ones. Try looking for a pair of giant, silly sunglasses in a dime store, and make sure the lenses are flexible enough.
The problem would be getting the foil to stick to the cardboard without any major wrinkles. However, the foil would be hidden under the duct tape. Probably cutting the foil into strips and putting them onto cardboard with glue a little bit like paper mache (but just one layer) would work, with duct tape on top.
I don't know... I just assumed it would be flexable, so you could bend down or something. Of course the foil would rip. Do you have the Ductagami book? It teaches you how to make duct take wallets to tool belts.
Foil wouldn't rip if it was glued down to cardboard, assuming the base cardboard wouldn't be folded back and forth a gazillion time. Foil wouldn't be necessary, really. The duct tape is flexible enough as it is, in fact, too flexible.
If I were to make new armor with duct tape, it would be something like duct tape over poster board.
I don't need a duct tape book; I'm self taught and have my own techniques. Considering the title of the book, I also do origami.
Duct tape can fix anything. from boots to jackets to even flesh wounds(ouch!) I appreciate the tips. It really helps. Is there a way to show weathering/ battle damage on the armor?
Actually its pretty soft. I never used any sheers, I just cut it with a sturdy pair of scissors. You could actually tear it, but I wouldn't recommend that as it would leave sharp edges.
It would be best to add it onto existing armor as "ablative" plating rather than construct something out of it in most cases.
Hey cool armor have you ever considered cardboard. Looks great after it has been filled and sanded. look up wizard of flights templates at the dented helmit. The cardboard I am using is not courogated and can be found at arts and craft stores in framing section
I have been considering making new armor. I1Orangeyoshi1 (he's on the Mando Mercs as Ch'ren) has been giving me some tips but I haven't even figured out the color scheme yet!
I'm going to post the finished product when its done. I was looking at the mandalorian mercs and got an idea since theres no one has an armor in the style of one of the alien species I'm going to try to make the helmet in a Rodian style. Mostly cause it looks like it would be easy to make and the eyes are bigger so the area of view would be larger.
Yeah I was going to use metal and pvc pipes but decided to make it this way so it would be easier and faster. I'm using an old undershirt for the base and taping it up then adding the cardboard cutouts from there. I'm making the leg and arm parts out of painted and cut dring bottles its looking pretty good so far. I'm saving the helmet for last.
Layers? I only used 2, two layers with the sticky sides together. I made a sheet of duct tape by criss-crossing pieces in two layers with sticky sides together.
But don't worry too much; duct tape layers (stick to non-sticky side only) are removable.
for the helmet itself is cardboard, for the dome, paper mache(don't know how you spell it) Having trouble making cheekbone, and suggestions on how I can do it?
I had made some paper/carboard armor once. Duct tape is far superior, though: more durable and decently waterproof, plus much rarer and unique. It does have the bad drawback of having to make giant sheets of duct tape. The piece for the dome was miserable. Putting the dome together was an ever greater nightmare.

Is there anything you can't make from duct tape? xD

Very nice! what you could do is cover you duct tape armor in fiberglass or bondo or something. it's a great idea for a model!

I think I've heard about that method before.

My helmet's multi-piece. It allows you to not have to cover all the face at once.
Even incompletely covered by plastic as in my duct tape armor is rather uncomfortable. Try doing that in 90+ degree weather for hours.

@TogrutaJedi sweet! haha i live in FL, walking outside in jeans will kill you right now.
shallowbay92 1 year ago
not going to lie, that is phenomenal! i love how it turned out and its all tape and paper. very nice way to do a costume.
boastudios 1 year ago
Actually, there's no paper in it :) Paper templates were used, but no paper found it's way into the final product.
TogrutaJedi 1 year ago
@TogrutaJedi i only use plaster on the helmet to make it stable. works like a charm.
boastudios 1 year ago
Oh, and the Mandalorian costuming community finds me a laughing stock for it.
TogrutaJedi 1 year ago
seriously? why? i find it quite a good idea. ill post up my mando progress one of these days. its all homemade from cardboard, plastic and plaster.
boastudios 1 year ago
They think it's funny because it's temporary and not very durable, as generally the idea is to have the best armor as possible.
Plaster? That stuff would crumble!

I guess aluminum foil+ Duct tape+carboard would work....

Aluminum flashing would be better if you wanted it shiny.
Look for it right next to the duct tape. It's sticky and stronger than foil.
xeodisc 2 years ago
@xeodisc
Yep, it would most certainly be stronger. Question is, how soft is it? It would obviously have to be cut by some sort of shears or the like.

Watch out for that demon of a helmet!
Sounds like it's coming along well.
If you have a digital camera, you should make a slide show of that.
TogrutaJedi 2 years ago
how many tape layers did you use on your helmet. I'm using a paint ball helmet to make it around I think I'm on the 4th layer.

Oh ok. It looks okay though so I don't think I messed it up. I'm finishing up on the top of the helmet and about to start the sides and back. thanks

Beware of those side panels! Look at the Mando Mercs forum if you need some templates to guide you.

How did you make visor for helmet? What did you use? Because I'm almost done with my helmet and just need visor
PIvsCakeProductions 2 years ago
Duct tape with pieces of cheap party sunglasses.
What are you making your helmet out of?
TogrutaJedi 2 years ago
for the helmet itself is cardboard, for the dome, paper mache(don't know how you spell it) Having trouble making cheekbone, and suggestions on how I can do it?
PIvsCakeProductions 2 years ago
Well, to make the cheekbone panels, you have to make it in two pieces.
You can ask 1Orangeyoshi1, a friend of mine, where you can find some templates on-line.
TogrutaJedi 2 years ago
I got the templates, making it fit is the problem
PIvsCakeProductions 2 years ago
Oh, disregard my latest message in your inbox.
Well, you'll just have to either keep on printing them out at different sizes untilt hey fit or cutting them down.
TogrutaJedi 2 years ago
I make mine out of cardboard, but it looks really good, going to paint mine silver and red :)
PIvsCakeProductions 2 years ago

Wow, that's pretty awesome for duct tape. =)
Have you ever tried making armor out of the plastic from sterilite trashcans? That's what I'm doing, and it's worked out pretty well so far.
AndreannaTelGrava 2 years ago
That's pretty cool.
This person should make some real armor.
They have the patients and creativity. :D

I do have a whole lot of patients, currently reinforced by origami.
I make a bunch of multipiece origami, which can take forever. I once made one with 270 pieces, which seemed like forever.
