  • @xxxDavidMaysxxx Emulator II's are awsome

I also enjoyed all the other songs- keep it up!

Is the song at 2:46 from the ridge racer game?

What is the name of the song at 4:20?

  • @stewartdahamman 4:20 is a kind of recreation for Depeche Mode "A Question of Time". 2:46 is a random arpeggio sound

  • @DX5 Thanks, well played-love your videos.

  • @stewartdahamman Hi there Mr! There's " A Question of time" - Depeche Mode at 4:20.

  • @polyrom Thanks, but I later found out it is ' Kim Wilde- kids of America'

  • @ensoniqz You are an idiot and a lier

  • @lebonpost wtf are you even talkin bout

  • what song are you playing in the beginning on arco strings? is that an actual song you're referencing? it sounds familiar

  • @clantogw Never tear us appart from INXS. Other famous track featuring that sound is Fresh Prince tune (the one at the beginning)

  • @DX5 Hello DX5, congratulations for your pieces of Depeche Mode, they are really very well made. I like Depeche Mode and I have just bought an emax SE . I have sounds emax 1 and I shall have can be also sounds OMI. You could say to me what are sounds emax1 and OMI it is necessary to use to play 1) black celebration 2) Stripped 3) People are Peaple 4) enjoy the silence.?

Thank you for your help and congratulations for your work? Keyz

  • just wanted to know, i have a emax 2, whats the sound effect at 5:45... is it part of the standard boot disk. or is it a separate em1 disk? i've been trying to work it out for some time.

  • Are these presets? Or what? I love all of these sounds.

  • OMG the first sound the ARCO STRINGS is used by the pet shop boys in there song heart you should cover it with your choir sounds for the lead will sound AMAZING!!!!

  • Does it have so much Presets or are all these sounds first load in ram from disk? is there enough ram for all that?

  • @HELLSPAWN1973 The Emax comes with 1MB, 2MB, 4MB and 8MB (if you are lucky). You can have several different patches using the same root waveform sound. But the fun of sampling comes when you have little memory. Once you get those sampler with 16 or 32MB of ram... it looses the charm. The fun comes in doing a lot with too little and you have plenty of tools to do that on an Emax.

  • :( We had an Emax when i was a kid, and now i am DESPERATE to find one! It was an amazing keyboard!

  • I am getting one of these thanks to your demo. I think my dreams of owing an EII are a bit far fetched, and this is the next best thing. Cheers, your videos are great. Love the INXS sound.

  • 5:59 wow!

  • uouuuuuuuuuu

  • DX5 could you please tell us which third party sample discs you used for this

  • mijito no m guto nononono pero lo q te salio un poco bien fue lo de black celebration pero de hai en fuera estas disparejo bueno suerte

  • best thing to do with this keyboard is to trigger hammond b4 software with it as the the feel is very similar

  • ALL I WANT TO KNOW!!

Can i get all the 8-bit ounds that were used on old samplin machines and import them to newer technology like today midi keyboards plz answer or do i go buy a E-mu Emulator

  • Well, you could.

But the cool about the emax, appart of its 12 bit sampling technology (it is really made using 8 real bits), is the analog board. Analog things doesn't sound the same twice, and you may hear some distortions or sound imperfections that make sound colourful.

Thought we didn't talk about the analog resonant filter.

I would go for one if you like 80's old skool sound.

  • i would have killed for one these back in the day ! shit was like $5 G's in like 1988

  • hey, just got an Emax se and really loving it only thing is i don't have many souinds... do you know where i can find them?

i understand i can sample but im looking for some emax preset sounds, any help is greatly appreciated! thanks

  • This recording is really noisy, it it not? I can hardly belive the Emax has this much hiss right?

  • Yes., Noise comes from my camera pre amp. The emax is quite less noisy.-

  • I have an EMAX II. I used it to record some freestyle dance tunes and some 80's pop songs. I got a CDROM drive for it and it came with four CD's with Emu Systems' sound libraries. I used to love the "Bass Case" sound that made a good dance lead synth line.

I can see how it works well for Depeche Mode stuff.

  • the thing i want to know.. can it actually sample from and CHOP... in the likes of the SP12000???

  • I never did. I guess it is easier to chop a sample on an external editor and then sample the pieces like individual ones into the Emax.

  • one of the good point with Emu is the sample ^^ the sample are more interesting than the hardware itself the synclavier or fairlight also have a good sample heard on every classic 80's album

  • Hi, what is the average price of older EMUs?

  • Hello. It depends which series (Emulator, Emax, etc) and what exact model (Emax I, SE, HD, etc).

The two i've got (Emax I keyboard bassic version) can go within 200 to 300 Euro depending of condition. HD models can go up to 400. If we talk about Emulator II, they are more expensive.

The main problem is that they are barely available. Then, prices go up.

  • You can really see it was the sounds that most of the groups used, around 1986 until 1988-89; the synth voices sounds especially...

  • The Emax sounds pretty cool, seems like a decent sampler keyboard. I like that it's got analog filters.

I've got a Roland D-20 and I hate the damn thing. It sounds like crap (and the output is very noisy, too). I thought all samplers were crap, but no, it's just that damn Roland.

  • I have a D10, same engine. It is not really a sampler, instead a ROMpler, as you can't record any external sound into it.

It has decent sounds too. Check my "Fade to Grey" cover, with a nice D10 background pad.

  • Man this is incredible. I've been looking for these sounds for ages...

Are these DM sounds (e.g. voices at 2:30, bells at 3:26) factory sounds or did you program them? Do you need to change disk for every sound?

I've always wanted to find out what kind of equipment DM used on MFTM. For me this is the best album ever.

  • The emax is a sampler. So, it has not internal sounds. You need to feed the machine for making sounds. The sounds here are from a library i bought time ago. Some of them are modified by myself.

The Emax memory is really thin (512 k), so every diskette only allows you to play not much different sounds.

Regarding MFTM tour, they used almost the same equipment you see. Emax (HD) and a Yamaha DX7IIFD. They were triggering EMAX rack for spare.

  • Two words: SOFT SYNTHS

  • Two else: ANALOG FILTERS :)

  • You got me there. Don't get me wrong... I have a whole collection of old analogs, but honestly... they pretty much just sit and decorate the crib! :( But they look great!

  • hehe I knew what were you meaning.

Sure it is the present. A laptop with the right soft do all the job nowadays. But I couldn't find any plug or soft sampler which can replay the Emax sound (even sampling at low rate). Every thing you sample into it, gets that retro mid 80's Depeche Mode style character.

  • Fu..in s,,in it You`re the best. Sounds used in a proper way,, and ..eh,,lack of words...

  • I really enjoyed the Enjoy The Silence part. There's something great about that part. :)

  • Just to be clear, Depeche Mode used Emu's Emulator sampler, rather than the Emax. Emax was still very nice, though. In fact, I think Queen used them. I believe 808 State did too, on their first album or two.

  • Yes, they used Emulator II a lot, but just think they used Emax from MFTM age (along MFTM tour) and then switched to the Emax II for Violation tour and also Devotional (altough here shared with different machines).

  • great!

Such a shame that those emax'es were pulled out of production. What would be a good software alternative for this ?

  • This emax 1 has analog filters in the outputs, so it is hard to recreate the warmth on a computer. Even the 8 bit recording (converted to a kind of 12 on playback) make this machine sound unique.

I have heard there are some soft samplers which can going close to this sound.

  • morgana

  • Ahhh the days when a sampler was a sampler... The Emax fits that criteria..Now it's all software which is great...but it doesn't replace the nostalgic hardware samplers

  • i've caught myself playing 2:30 to 2:41 for a half an hour straight. its just something about it lol

  • great demo mayne

  • anelehgram:

INXS - Never Tear Us Apart

  • Cool! Thanks for your answer.

  • From 0:09 to 0:23 what is the name of the song?

  • i have an Emax 1 HD SE and i love it.

My Question : would be possible to maybe obtain some of your library ? I would cover the costs of course.

    Regards

    Marc

  • Hello !

Nice videos, i like them really, i have a question .. So, hard to learn play on keyboard instruments? Because, i really like to learn it how.. :) Please give me an answer! Thank you :)

  • Hello.

It depends. There are a lot of factors. I can't tell you: one month, or One year.

Everyone is different. But if you like keyboards, try to get one for trying.

    Thanks for watching.

  • In my opinion you don't need to jump into classical lessons to play on synth. As long as you have good sound memory you can start to fit together sounds you want a lot quicker than you can with a guitar.

  • about 2:50- great sound=)

what is the name of this song?

  • 2:50 exactly just extemporizing. Then I started something like New Order "blue Monday" (but out of tune, I was just tweaking the library with no edition)

  • you are great :)

  • 0.51 metal slug x first stage

  • what are the songs at 2:12 and 4:10 ????

  • 2:12 is me extemporizig. Around 4:10 sounds Depeche Mode "A Question Of Time" riff

  • Everything Counts Depeche Mode.Great song. And your video too ;)

  • Oh man my school had one of these but no one knew how to use it including me and no one at the time seemed to have the floppies for it :-( can you belive they sold it for a real cheesy zoom sampler, even chucked the old atari 1040ST which I wanted! but I got the old DX-100 for free :-) Nice vid!

  • Christ i remember those Keyboards! Takes me back.

  • brilliant enjoy the silence

  • Sorry for the delay in my answer!.

I think Emax worth a lot. It is really easy and intuitive. It allows to have shortcuts with the numeric keypad. It is like some mobiles. If you want to reach x parameter, just only have to select the main group and then press 01, 05, 07 and you will be drop into the desired parameter.

I have an Akai S3000XL too, and I choose my emax for 80's sounds (even with its limited memory).

Go for one of these if you can.

  • Your Emax doesn't by any chance have a cigarette burn on the case, does it? (Toward the left corner if I remember rightly.) I used to own one of DM's Music for the Masses tour Emaxes about 18 years ago, and that was the main distinguishing mark...

  • hey!

This one does not have that mark. But the other one I own (now it is frozen and doesn't work, keys doesn't respond) has a cigarette mark in a key around the second octave.

It would be great if it was a original DM Emax!

  • Sounds like Clockwork Orange at around 30 seconds in.

  • thats the same emax that roddy bottum used on "Angel Dust" by Faith No More. ive seen him in the studio with it. i think he used a much different model live though...

  • damn that sounds sooo good, love the oldskool sounding samples, reminds me of mod files :P also did i hear you trying to play blue monday? another q, approximately how much would one of these be?

  • Hi richard.

Their price is around 250 to 300 euro, (maybe 100 less, 100 more, etc). It also depends of what version is (SE, SE HD,etc) and if it comes with library or not.

Yes, I was tweaking Blue Monday for checking my library, but some section was out of tune. I will do a Blue Monday cover soon.

  • thankyou for your quick helpful reply, i wish you all the best :)

  • Also used by FAITH NO MORE, and THE BEASTIE BOYS in "Paul's Boutique" LP

  • Yeah they say this sounds like the Emulator, what do you think? Does this allow you to just have a couple samples or do you have to multisample for everything?...If got the Prophet 2002 and Mirage...looking to get the Emax...

  • Pet shop boys in a box.

    Nice keys.

  • Cool!!

  • wow you suck

  • What a stupid thing to say.

  • What's the sound you use for "It's a question of time"

    i know I have i just can't remember what's it's called I have two Emax HDSEs so I know I have it!

You a man after my own musical heart!

  • Not remember exactly how is it called. It belongs to a library I bought. I will check it and let you updated.

    Best..

  • gtjdddhh..

  • very good 12-bit sound

  • were did u buy yours

  • Try Ebay and have a little bit of patience until you find one in good shape and then... place a good bid :)

  • thanks

  • holy shit, i've been playing a question of time right all this time.. awesome lol.. btw i like the fact that there are synth nerds out there who are into the depeche mode side of things instead of just the DJ crowd which is what most of the vids you find are..

  • Though it's even more limited, I like the EII better.

But the Emax was my first Sampler back then, and I LUV IT!

  • I wish I could get one of these (cheap preferred :)

  • They're not that hard to find..

But be prepared to do some repairs yourself in most cases ;)

  • good rappresentation

    good sound

  • is that second keyboard a KORG dw-8000?

  • Not altought it looks very similar due to lack of light. It is a Yamaha DX7 II FD on the shadow.

  • were do u buy these at i want 1

  • Try Ebay as a resource.

  • good stuff. i have an emax original

  • I use the Emax HD model for all of my keyboard videos. Which model Emax is that?

  • Hey, your videos are cool! Love specially the Shout song.

Mine is Emax I bassic model. Internally is a Version 2, rev C (so can be upgraded to SCSI for fitting an internal or external HD, but requires some mods.

I have another one but it has a problem on the Digital board and doesn't respond to any switch.

  • i am getting mine tomorow.i am a bit nervous as with any vintage keyboard about having it shipped to me. none the less i am pretty excited to be getting one.

  • yes, emaxes are a little bit fragiles (specially the power supply).

Sure you will enjoy this machine. The easiest way to sample and learn how to deal with 512 k!

  • Man, this sampler rocks... I have a Yamaha A5000 with 128 megs of RAM and it has a warm sound. At least I thought so till I watched this video... :-D

  • I had one of these.. love them!.

brilliant analog filters.. used to play with the Q (resonance) :D

traded it for a Roland D50.. which isnt a bad synth either. .but i loved they feel of the keyboard of the Emax!.

  • Any reason you bought the EMAX ? I remember opting for the EPS which was better in prectically every feature.

How much did you pay for it ?

  • I was looking for one of these years ago. I also have an Akai S3000XL HD, but the main reason is that I wanted to get the same lo-fi, analog, warm sound like some early DM works. And this machine can do it. Anything you sample or load in, sounds really warm.

Also, the best way to appreciate 32Mb of a modern sampler, is to deal with an emax (only 512 Kb).

These machines (EMAX I) are around 200-300 euro. If SE or HD model, they can go up.

  • i know these are very seperate keyboards....but how would u rate the warmth of a kurzweil k2000 to this keyboard

  • SOrry I havn't checked the K2000 so hope some fellou youtuber can answer better.

  • Great vid. Are you a NIN fan at all...apparently Pretty Hate Machine was composed on one of these.... any chance we could see you play some NIN stuff? I'd like to hear what it sounds like raw...

  • I really appreciate the NIN work altought not a huge fan. But I could manage some NIN demo too.

    Thanks for watching.

  • Simply incredible ! Huge keyboard, huge sounds, huge player ! I love !!!

  • all is right except for the Huge player hah
