Cant help people who dont want to be helped. The leaders in this town arent going to do anything for the people who give them their income unless they benefit from it personally. I buy gas,food,beer,clothes on base and not give this town a dime other then the shitty place i'm renting for way too much and thats what I will continue to do untill things change. @jetmech409 well I do what I can. I keep my house clean. I help whoever is in need. I support the local sports teams. Im involved with my family. I find things to do. It's actually pretty great here for me. I know personally I haven't done much to better the community but i'm happy with how things are. I've been to many cool places. But this is home.

Most people of Clovis are really really nice and our quarrel isn't with the people. It's the whole town not wanting to progress/get better. I can understand hometown pride. I speak to some civilians on occasion and they are all trying to leave this place from what they tell me. I think they are only here because, like me, they are stuck. Yeah, they could leave here and be jobless, but who really wants to be unemployed in todays economy? New airmen are getting into the wrong scene here because there's nothing to do, and its just a shame. I thought by now, clovis would have gotten better.

But if this is where I saw myself in 13+years, I would have gotten out after 6yrs. What have I done in the past 4 years? Gone overseas for every one of those years. What can I do to improve the quality of life here? Just about as much as you can, not much. Maybe pick up other peoples trash:/ Let me ask you this, what can one really do to improve clovis???

Im stationed in Clovis currently and well I love it, i do wish there was more night life though, maybe an olive garden too. overall Clovis is a nice place to live, some of the nicest people I've met. but a nice dance club and such would take Clovis to a whole nother level. i can promise if there was an olive garden it would be packed all the time :) plus all that stuff would bring more revenue to the town, airman would be more inclined to stay here instead of going elswhere on the weekends.
I was stationed at Cannon AFB from 1994-1997 and I know Clovis was not all bad for me, I thought it was a nice little railroad town, with a base attached. I am sad to see this video, its like its getting to be a ghost town or something. I knew the "shifty 50" were the controlling political force of that town even back then, but I don't know, there is hopefully some growth coming to the city, its really not a bad place to live.. The air force screwed me too. I did 7 in the clovis pen. Then they stationed me at hurlburt for three years, where I gained some of my sanity back. Then the AF threatened to send me back. Good job Ass Force. The air force should seriously consider their fraud/waste/abuse of reallocating their troops. I wanted a career, but they made my decision to leave easy. I wish I could station the pentagon personnel in Clovis.

i have a very good friend in the air force. ALL of you are right. the town fought to keep this base and now they treat you like your beneath them and charge you OUTRAGEOUS prices for housing. my friend pays less for his beach front florida property then his house here in this pothole in new mexico. i feel so sorry for all the military here. as much as i would miss my friend i only pray they send this PERFECT fighting group to a place that APPRECIATES and DESERVES them....
after living in clovis now for 5 plus years i can tell you that the people of clovis deserve what has become of them. they keep electing the same people, putting the same judges and etc. in office and expect change. using the base and their greed to jack the hell out of housing and groceries. i mean really, with all the dairies sucking up all the water you would think you could get a better price on milk. then expect you to go with out water so the dairies can use it. haha right.

I used to live there between 1996-1998 stationed at Cannon AFB. To this day, i cant recommend any reasons why an Airman should put in for orders there. It's like a prison sentence (counting down the days till you get outta there). I dont miss Clovis in any way and if the base closed, you wouldnt hear much complainning!

I have lived here for almost 2 years now and I would like to say YES it is bad!!! There is no reason for this base to still be open when other bases that have housing to put people are being closed. We don't have proper hangers to store the aircraft and the weather conditions stop the air craft from flying over 80% of the time, Safety is non existent I know children who have been kidnapped, Someone tried to break into my house, Drugs everywhere, Someone was stabbed again at Walmart 2 weeks ago.
I was raised in Clovis, and its not that bad, but it could use a lot of work. I moved out of there when I turned 18, I'm now 22 and living in Houston, TX. When I go back to visit, all of my friends and most of the "smart people" that I went to high school with now have two or three kids, are on drugs, in jail, have a drinking problem, or just abandoned their dreams and settled. Nothing ever seems to change, except a new McDonald's......whoohoo. I'm now attending my first year of med school.....
I spent several years in Clovis. My daughter was born there (she's really embarrassed about that) I moved away 9 years ago, and leaving that dead-end place was the best thing I could do for myself and my kid. No opportunities, no well-paying jobs, no real education, no hope. Just wind, dirt, scum, cow shit and a depressing situation. I'm so glad I got out. I still have family there, but I will never go back. A little advice to young people who want a future - GET THE HELL OUT OF CLOVIS!!

I'ved lived in clovis for years ...then i jumped shipped and moved to las cruces. I know the streets very well i used to work at pizza hut on 7th and papa johns on 21st. So i been on every street thinkable. So yeah Ive seen clovis go up and down and seems like its changed a bit everytime i go back.

I am really sympathetic to your situation. I went to college in the neighboring town of Portales. I am from MN so it was a really different experience for me. My guess is that you are a young person. My suggestion is the following:

It has been a year since I left this place and oh how I don't miss it. LOL retirement and the choices it gives you are great. Don't have to live where somebody tells me to and have the locals tell me how great it is. Going out to dinner really sucks in Clovis. There is about 5 choices in town and they get old quick not as old as some of the homes in Clovis or not as old as Main street but still old. I will have to say there should be remote pay at Cannon since there is nothting around.

There are several problems with this town, but sometimes paranoia and misinformation make us believe falsehoods as truth. But what we do have, and you can see it if you have ever had to deal with the city government, is that we have an older generation that refuses to change. That in my opinion is the #1 reason Clovis is the next victim of an anarchist revolution.

Can anyone provide a link to the businesses in the "Shifty 50?" No alcohol on Sunday is complete BS, as is no alcohol on Christmas. I'm sorry, but everyone knows that Baby Jesus drank eggnog to celebrate his immaculate conception lol. The WalMart employees look like Zombies, and their prices are jacked up beyond belief. I am military and think the locals are rude and have a sense of entitlement. There's something wrong with a city when the churches are almost the same size as the hospital.
Oh, and if you find a legit source to describe them, a lot of the descriptions for them come up as "a group of people whose stated purpose is to express support for Cannon AFB." Very true to an extent. The reason being is because a lot of the businesses in Clovis owned by members of the committee have the majority of their clientel on Cannon AFB, and they know (like I said before) without Cannon AFB, Clovis would be economically shot down and turned into a ghost town.
The Committee of 50 are pretty much a select group made up of 50 people who run Clovis. Upper middle class or upper class citizens of Clovis who control what new businesses open up. Most of these people have their own businesses in Clovis and won't allow competition or anything that goes against their religious beliefs. The way they do it is pretty much the same concept of lobbying, except instead of 1 person, there are 50.
When I was at Cannon there was a mandatory meeting with the Commity of fifty (business owners) for all new airmen at Furrs Cafeteria. I didn't go to my meeting with them cause I was forwarned about them telling us that we had to spend our money in Clovis, at their stores. 1983 to 1987.
9. Sell liquor and alcohol 24hrs./day- 7 days a week. Especially Sundays (they should have sales). That's Why you need to get rid of The Committee. Clovis has just as much right to a bottle of Hennessy at 2AM on Sunday as NYC.
7. Build a bunch of crap on the highway that goes to Portales. Clovis and Portales are pretty much the same thing already, might as well hook them up with strip malls and used car lots.
8. Put some trees and flowers and whatnot all over the town.
4. After a few crowd-attracting sites are set up (i.e. an active bar besides Kelley's, a real mall, and a movie theatre that doesn't make me want to go home and watch the bootleg version of whatever movie is showing, arcades, skating rinks, bowling allies, dance clubs, etc.).. ADVERTISE OUT OF TOWN.
5. Paint your fucking buildings. Everyone knows its already dusty, but it also rains. Paint some pink shit. Blue ain't hurtin nobody either. Walking down any street is just depressing.
1.- Kick the "Committee of 50" (or whatever they're called) out of Clovis. (And any other religious fundamentalists)
2.-Stop trashing military personnel, if it weren't for Cannon AFB, Clovis would just look like a giant flea market with no customers (it kind of already does.)
3. Stop treating high school football like the Superbowl.

I have been out of Clovis for almost 40 years now. Was so happy to get out. Was hoping to get back sometime to see how things have changed in that time. I can understand hometown pride. I speak to some civilians on occasion and they are all trying to leave this place from what they tell me. I think they are only here because, like me, they are stuck. Yeah, they could leave here and be jobless, but who really wants to be unemployed in todays economy? New airmen are getting into the wrong scene here because there's nothing to do, and its just a shame. I thought by now, clovis would have gotten better.

Im stationed in Clovis currently and well I love it, i do wish there was more night life though, maybe an olive garden too. overall Clovis is a nice place to live, some of the nicest people I've met. but a nice dance club and such would take Clovis to a whole nother level. i can promise if there was an olive garden it would be packed all the time :) plus all that stuff would bring more revenue to the town, airman would be more inclined to stay here instead of going elswhere on the weekends.

I was stationed at Cannon AFB from 1994-1997 and I know Clovis was not all bad for me, I thought it was a nice little railroad town, with a base attached. I am sad to see this video, its like its getting to be a ghost town or something. I knew the "shifty 50" were the controlling political force of that town even back then, but I don't know, there is hopefully some growth coming to the city, its really not a bad place to live.. Lots of sunshine and good people there:))

Why don't people know how to drive/do the speed limit or give appreciation to the military. Its like save us, save us military, then its fuck you look for something to do while you are here. They could put a theme park, autocross track or military appreciation week. But I think they should put up stop signs or Im going to sue this city and plant some fucking trees. The air force screwed me too. I did 7 in the clovis pen. Then they stationed me at hurlburt for three years, where I gained some of my sanity back. Then the AF threatened to send me back. Good job Ass Force. The air force should seriously consider their fraud/waste/abuse of reallocating their troops. I wanted a career, but they made my decision to leave easy. I wish I could station the pentagon personnel in Clovis.

I used to live there between 1996-1998 stationed at Cannon AFB. To this day, i cant recommend any reasons why an Airman should put in for orders there. It's like a prison sentence (counting down the days till you get outta there). I dont miss Clovis in any way and if the base closed, you wouldnt hear much complainning!

I have lived here for almost 2 years now and I would like to say YES it is bad!!! There is no reason for this base to still be open when other bases that have housing to put people are being closed. We don't have proper hangers to store the aircraft and the weather conditions stop the air craft from flying over 80% of the time, Safety is non existent I know children who have been kidnapped, Someone tried to break into my house, Drugs everywhere, Someone was stabbed again at Walmart 2 weeks ago.

I was raised in Clovis, and its not that bad, but it could use a lot of work. I moved out of there when I turned 18, I'm now 22 and living in Houston, TX. When I go back to visit, all of my friends and most of the "smart people" that I went to high school with now have two or three kids, are on drugs, in jail, have a drinking problem, or just abandoned their dreams and settled. Nothing ever seems to change, except a new McDonald's......whoohoo. I'm now attending my first year of med school.....

I spent several years in Clovis. My daughter was born there (she's really embarrassed about that) I moved away 9 years ago, and leaving that dead-end place was the best thing I could do for myself and my kid. No opportunities, no well-paying jobs, no real education, no hope. Just wind, dirt, scum, cow shit and a depressing situation. I'm so glad I got out. I still have family there, but I will never go back. A little advice to young people who want a future - GET THE HELL OUT OF CLOVIS!!

I'ved lived in clovis for years ...then i jumped shipped and moved to las cruces. I know the streets very well i used to work at pizza hut on 7th and papa johns on 21st. So i been on every street thinkable. So yeah Ive seen clovis go up and down and seems like its changed a bit everytime i go back.

This video shows 80% percent of the town and it's worse in person. IDEA: Teach your kids not to do drugs and have multiple children by the time they get out of high school. Anyone with any sense at all gets the hell out of here as soon as possible. This place is a dead end and is left with people that have no other place to go. I am really sympathetic to your situation. I went to college in the neighboring town of Portales. I am from MN so it was a really different experience for me. My guess is that you are a young person. My suggestion is the following:
-Study hard
-During the school year, work on the weekends.
-During summers, work at least 55 hours a week.
-Save your money.
-Get the heck out of that place.

It has been a year since I left this place and oh how I don't miss it. LOL retirement and the choices it gives you are great. Don't have to live where somebody tells me to and have the locals tell me how great it is. Going out to dinner really sucks in Clovis. There is about 5 choices in town and they get old quick not as old as some of the homes in Clovis or not as old as Main street but still old. I will have to say there should be remote pay at Cannon since there is nothting around.

There are several problems with this town, but sometimes paranoia and misinformation make us believe falsehoods as truth. But what we do have, and you can see it if you have ever had to deal with the city government, is that we have an older generation that refuses to change. That in my opinion is the #1 reason Clovis is the next victim of an anarchist revolution.

Can anyone provide a link to the businesses in the "Shifty 50?" No alcohol on Sunday is complete BS, as is no alcohol on Christmas. I'm sorry, but everyone knows that Baby Jesus drank eggnog to celebrate his immaculate conception lol. The WalMart employees look like Zombies, and their prices are jacked up beyond belief. I am military and think the locals are rude and have a sense of entitlement. There's something wrong with a city when the churches are almost the same size as the hospital.

Oh, and if you find a legit source to describe them, a lot of the descriptions for them come up as "a group of people whose stated purpose is to express support for Cannon AFB." Very true to an extent. The reason being is because a lot of the businesses in Clovis owned by members of the committee have the majority of their clientel on Cannon AFB, and they know (like I said before) without Cannon AFB, Clovis would be economically shot down and turned into a ghost town.

The Committee of 50 are pretty much a select group made up of 50 people who run Clovis. Upper middle class or upper class citizens of Clovis who control what new businesses open up. Most of these people have their own businesses in Clovis and won't allow competition or anything that goes against their religious beliefs. The way they do it is pretty much the same concept of lobbying, except instead of 1 person, there are 50.

When I was at Cannon there was a mandatory meeting with the Commity of fifty (business owners) for all new airmen at Furrs Cafeteria. I didn't go to my meeting with them cause I was forwarned about them telling us that we had to spend our money in Clovis, at their stores. 1983 to 1987.

9. Sell liquor and alcohol 24hrs./day- 7 days a week. Especially Sundays (they should have sales). That's Why you need to get rid of The Committee. Clovis has just as much right to a bottle of Hennessy at 2AM on Sunday as NYC.

7. Build a bunch of crap on the highway that goes to Portales. Clovis and Portales are pretty much the same thing already, might as well hook them up with strip malls and used car lots.

After a few crowd-attracting sites are set up (i.e. an active bar besides Kelley's, a real mall, and a movie theatre that doesn't make me want to go home and watch the bootleg version of whatever movie is showing, arcades, skating rinks, bowling allies, dance clubs, etc.).. ADVERTISE OUT OF TOWN.
5. Paint your fucking buildings. Everyone knows its already dusty, but it also rains. Paint some pink shit. Blue ain't hurtin nobody either. Walking down any street is just depressing.

How to make Clovis better:
1.- Kick the "Committee of 50" (or whatever they're called) out of Clovis. (And any other religious fundamentalists)
2.-Stop trashing military personnel, if it weren't for Cannon AFB, Clovis would just look like a giant flea market with no customers (it kind of already does.)
3. Stop treating high school football like the Superbowl.

Wow, have things gotten that bad? Doesn't look like there's much left to boycott. So move away if life there is so bad. I lived there from `69 to `72 and it certainly wasn't so "vacant" looking back then - had that Route 66 charm - but things change I guess. I remember how great the people were (and hopefully still are). Maybe some new blood in city gov't. will turn things around. Until then, you have to be imaginative ... or visit Amarillo or Albuquerque to satisfy your big-city appetite.

I was born and raised in Clovis. The people aren't bad, and it does seem to be growing a bit now. However, if the Glorious Leaders of the city keep pushing such complete reliance on the base for Clovis' survival.... well, that basket of eggs may break someday and there'll be nothing to fall back upon.
Ease up on the business environment and watch the dollars roll in. Give smart business folks a real reason to move here.

Clovis sucks so bad, only reason this city gets ANY money is the military base thats 10 miles out from it. Clovis is not a city, its a village. The wind sucks, the bars suck, the theater sucks, the mall sucks. The mall is ONE hallway with shit in it. The only thing that has remotely close to a city is walmart. I was in Clovis last week, I just went to where I had to go and left town fast, I didnt care to see anymore of it than what I saw passing through.
It has to be one of the ugliest towns in new mexico.

I have been out of Clovis for almost 40 years now. Was so happy to get out. Was hoping to get back sometime to see how things have changed in that time. Wow, after reading all these posts I think I'll just stay back here in the east and enjoy the scenery. The fall colors in the hills are beautiful right now!

I use to live in clovis. I loved it. Still do. ONe thing why should they build anything when people destroy it or rob it? i mean when i was their they where going to shut the mall down because hey weren't making money because of theft.j so tell me should they build something better to make it get worse or should people change to make it better. Community work you want a building or smoething new for fun do a fun raiser.

To make Clovis NM a better place to live is easy. Get rid of all the illeagal Mexicans. They are draining the economy by not paying taxes, generating hospital bills, and milking the education and welfare system. Furthermore, start handing out speeding tickets to generate more money. Ticket the trashy people who have junk yards in their lawns.

This town is a piece of crap that should blow away like a tumble weed and would without the base. The town people should thank the military for saving their town. They should also have respect for the military families...this town lacks education and common sense it sucks the people here need to try and find a clue...their town sucks and they need to stop banging their sister's and maybe they would get somewhere in life.

True, crime numbers in Clovis are lowerthan those in Albuquerque or Las Cruces by a long stretch. Go out to the boonies, buty a huge house with 10 acres, get a horse, and see how much you hate Eastern new mexico then. It will still cost you less than a crappy condo in FLA. Or get a cool place in Portales or off Llano and save the extra 1,000 a month.
