After visiting the country last year, I had this image left: a country symbolized by a legendary capital, "raped" by WWII (all those Soviet monuments kept with Austrian taxpayers money) and forced to live in the form of a "small Germany" (politically speaking, since both nations have identical political systems). All in all, a nation which had to go through an existential crisis, especially since the formation of the actual republic in 1948.

People who live today cannot be blamed for things that happened in the past in their country. You are no more responsible as an Austrian than I am as a Briton for the African slave trade. In acknowledging the past we are already on the way for atoning tor the crimes of our ancestors.
