um im pretty sure that its inertia, not the ring contracting. don't believe me? try it with a wood ring.

And I'm pretty sure a wooden ring wouldn't contract. And because it wouldn't, the cigarette butt touching the ring would be moved with it from friction (unless you're using a very polished wooden ring). The plastic ring makes it trickier for the people who don't know how it works (or too drunk to care) because, just like the guy said in the vid, if you hit it from the outside, the ring will pop the cigarette butt into the air.

The ring will expand if you hit it on the outside, very small almost impossible to notice. If you do it with a wood ring, It will work wherever you hit it, because it doesnt contract like the plastic ring does. Thats the trick, to get people to hit the side. If you hit it on the inside, it WILL contract, but you are also right, inertia has a big role.
