I honestly can't believe that a professional outfit would be OK with invisible fire. It's an absurd risk to just do nothing about, when you think about it.
@TopperHey They went to it after several accidents at the Indy500 involving Gasoline, which created thick black plumes and made it impossible for everybody else to see what was going on and where help needed to be sent to.
Water is the besy extinguisher for a methanol fire because it dilutes the alcohol content to a non-combustible state. (trust me.. I used to be a pit lane fire man for Indy cars) Around 199 we also began adding a rapid cool-down additive to our water extinguishers (not the buckets) that removes the heat from fire. it's a vegetable-derived product called ColdFire and comes in a spray can which also great to have on hand in the kitchen. It'll basically kill any small fire.
I beg to differ, gasoline is a compound that is composed of hydrogen bonds hence gasoline is composed of 45% alcohols, though the chemical formul C8H18 should state otherwise.

I got to give it up to the cameraman and crew as they felt it caught fire right away and bailed out of there.

wouldn't it be increadibly simple to equip at least two or three members from firefighting team with thermal glasses?

they now add gasoline to the fuel ... one major reason is to help visualize fires.

Why water5 is so more effctivle to methanol than for gasoline? They say water just spread gasoline liquide with the fire.
jerryaltman 4 years ago
because methanol is alcahol. and alcahol absorbs water.....which means it dilutes the methanol very well

Ohhh, I see now. Water don't mix with gasoline, but with alcohol yes. Thank you for the information.

It's methanol. You can't see the flames. Just look for the people running like hell.
