Well I think its proper since you see alot of other Black Metal bands don't portray the same tone and lyrical manner that suicide/depressive black metal bands do.

Mayhem's style is more of a chaotic mood, Carpathian forest dishes a gritty violent sound, and Darkthrone does an angry evil atmosphere. So as a whole they are black metal, but I think its ok to have the sub catagories to further distinguish themselves.
