  • what a load of rubbish!

  • 1:18 to 1:37

    Wait, what?

  • Don't try to explain if you can't do it correctly.

  • prove it

  • babyfacefister? WTF?

  • not all atoms in the universe changed, just the ones in his hand that went to lower energy levels so that the diamond ones could go to higher energy levels. for what i understand of thermodynamics thats how it works.

  • @Gonzaga78 You should be in the top comments because that is exactly the truth, there can't be 2 electrons in the exact same state, but just for specific atoms, not for all the universe.

  • Wait...Doesn't this imply that something moves faster than light? What is telling these electrons to change?

  • blah blah blah get naked cox!

  • thats a big ass diamond

  • Scratching my balls right now, every electron in the universe knows it!

  • Mind = Blown

  • 3million billion carbon atoms

  • I love random YouTube commenters telling a world famous particle physicist that he's wrong about particle physics.

  • @apawstate then you'll love Sean Carroll's Discover Magazine article: "Everything is Connected" (you can search and find it online). Also look up "argumentum ad verecundiam" while you're at it.

  • @apawstate h ttp ://blogs.d iscovermagazine. com/cosmicvariance/2012/02/23/everything-is-connected/ there are spaces in this

  • @apawstate Random? You have no idea who these commenters are. "World famous" has to do w/ being on TV. Many physicists who are widely respected in their field and who have written books as well, have weighed in on this, and some are more respected than Cox in the halls of physics. An equivalent would be psychologists weighing in on Dr. Drew's comments on TV. Being on TV involves image & the ability to state things in a way an audience can understand, but it doesn't mean they're 100% correct!

  • Well, thats what you say but it is not necessarily correct.

  • Cox is wrong. Again.

  • There are surely 3 million billion billion electrons in your hands Brain that have changed their energy levels, they aren't way off somewhere in another galaxy like you imply. Stop trying to wow the public with shitty interpretations of physics.

  • @conorordan The point is they are not nessecarily the corresponding energy levels as the ones found in the diamond. Should one shift to the level equal to an electon found in andromeda the one in andromeda has to shift.

  • The Pauli Exclusion Principle means particles cannot have the same quantum state, not energy level. As quantum state includes the idea of location, "Professor" Cox's thesis would seem to be utterly wrong.

  • So we're just throwing Einstein out the fucking window? Whos next? Freud!?

  • @DivideofNations - You might want to pick a more respectable person the Freud. Maybe Newton? Freud was a psychologist who has been in some respects debunked.

  • This is a perfect example of logic based on the principle that matter is "all cause." the basic fallacy of modern science. Presently defined as, "unlimited or incalculably," and (correctly) regarded as only relative (true) it has yet to be given a basic definition. Prof. Cox gets it right, but only as based on a false datum that all space is defined by all particles.

  • @pazooter Exactly!

  • i already know this titty face

  • *is sceptical*

I think it would have been good to know what he said before he says "for example" :P

  • Of course that's true, you silly boy, do you think that's an original thought? It's the physical reality, that occupies all the space, but within the mind is where it's at, the conceptual reality. The both exist, and that's no lie, regardless what you believe. If you take the time, to think it through, you may know just what I mean.

The Divine Reality that transcends both space & time, is the God that created it all,

both the seen & the unseen, & nothing can compare to the power of God's Will.

  • @virtuallyjesuschrist But then again, we're individuals with our own agendas. How can we be be connected? In reality it's easy to see, once you know the truth. It's the brotherhood of man you fools, which includes women & children too. We're all the same, and always have been, since the beginning of it all. We're finite beings born to die with nothing but time on our hands.

Both you, & I, pursue our happiness, before our life here ends, but I don't take for granted, the liberty, I've been given.

  • Come on people, you all know this doesn't make any goddamned sense. But some how we understand it.

  • @ac1dchr15t it actually does make sense.

  • sounds stupid. so every time i stroke my di*k all of the universe changes? nah, plus how electrons shift energy levels? arent those fixed?

  • This... this is just not true. It's definitely troubling when science "rockstars" start spreading misinformation.

  • Just at the moment, when the speed of mutual interaction of water molecules is not sufficient for full communication and energy exchange, a spontaneous breaking will occur and the water vapor will condense into droplets, outside of whose the motion and mutual interactions of molecules remain unaffected.

  • So that this is the reason why everything is not connected with everything on our Universe and the lost of connection of things even manifest itself with observable way as a so-called spontaneous symmetry breaking. For example, if we compress the water vapor, then the environment becomes more dense and the speed of energy spreading through it decreases.

  • So, why every electron should be of the different energy level and other objects not? For example, the electrons within atoms occupy quite well defined energy levels due the quantization and whole the quantum mechanics is based on the assumption, the intermediate energy levels are just unobservable due the uncertainty principle. The first criterion of existence in physics is observability in general sense. If something remains unobservable, they simply doesn't exist.

  • The introductory assumption, that every electron in the Universe is of different energy level is just plain wrong with respect to quantum mechanics and from this error the whole rest of misinterpretation follows. Anyway, this stance is widespread between formally and schematically thinking people and it even has its dual version: a "single electron universe" hypothesis (you can Google for it if you want).

  • i cant take him seriously with that much makeup on

  • everything is everything

    because molecules

  • Brian Cox is wrong. Pauli's exclusion principle is only valid for an atom and not the entire universe.

  • What a load of crap. The PES comes about because electrons are identical, and what happens if you were to exchange two of them. But when you can identify electrons, they are different (e.g. with different spin states). An electron in a different carbon atom in another diamond is not in the same state, even if it has the same energy and spin. An electron not in a carbon atom is not in the same state.

Regardless, any communication could not possibly be instantaneous.

    Physics FAIL

  • @swansontea dang for real so what is everything made of been readding this In theoretical physics, M-theory is an extension of string theory in which 11 dimensions are identified. Because the dimensionality exceeds that of superstring theories in 10 dimensions, proponents believe that the 11-dimensional theory unites all five string theories (and supersedes them).

  • Cox will be the Dawkins of our generation

  • just give me that diamond, and you can keep the electrons and other stuff.

  • Cool. We're all connected. I like that idea. It's like the universe is us and we are the universe.

    ....

Although.... there are some people, places, and things I wish I weren't connected to... T_T

  • No electrons respect Pauli. (1:16) Electrons don't learn respect or fear - they just are. Balance is not found through respect. Balance is found through chaos. Thank you. Back to school.

  • @CCPrintingPress EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED TO EVERYTHING.

  • I'm a Physicist too, and I can translate this into plain English: Everytime you fap, God kills a kitten.

  • Hehe.. Cox..

  • explain it like i am five ?

  • @TheFiratunal No two electrons may be at the same level, completely equal in their current state of energy. Thus when you change the energy of anything (in this case a diamond), the energy of the universe must check to make sure this new state is not equal to any other state that is already out there, thus everything is connected.

  • @jackhudson21 thanks buddy when i read wiki it became more obvious, it is really cool actually.

  • Can I get the math that proves this bro?

  • In order to satsify the principle as stated, not all atoms in the universe would have to change energy levels, only 3 million billion billion would have to change. The rest could stay as they are. Also, this principle only holds if you presuppose that there are a finite number of possible 'energy levels'. Is there any reason to suppose such a thing?

  • @Clarice007 true

  • @Clarice007 Isn't he suggesting that the principle of we can view the universe we do the diamond? That all atoms within the universe would act as the molecules within the diamond, working to balance it's energy levels.

  • @Clarice007 actually he would be exhaling at a different rate and burning more calories whilst charging diamond therefore a transfer of charge effects, though practically imperceptible, are attributed directly to the vacuum domain and so on and so on...

  • @Clarice007 But if those atoms around the diamond change, also the atoms that are areound the atoms around the diamond need to change, right? like a wave...

  • @Clarice007 there are over 9000 energy levels.

  • @Voyksed :))

  • @Clarice007 The very fact that the other atoms would know to stay the way they are based on the changes in the 3 million billion billion would prove his point anyhow.

  • "Quick cut to the altbro"

  • I wouldn't say he explains it, he just tells us what it is. Explains would be a whole lot cooler.

  • @yafflehk He does, you can watch the hour long talk online

  • Ok.

  • This hurts my head

  • que?

  • The Universe really is querer than we can suppose...
