This is good info depending on where you are at. If your just starting out as a singer then his advice is sound. However if you already have an established band you've been working w/ & U are ready to go to the next level then stick with your band. I think the person in this video was referring more 2 ppl who want to "try out" being a singer & don't have any background in it. Trust me get a bunch of TRULY dedicated musicians in their who are spending their own money & you will see results.
Well, that was full of information on......"certain" things. I'm sure your not in business with said session players, and would benefit nothing from the hiring of their talents. How well versed are they in theory? Could they really be more skilled than my hometown musician who has heard my music much more than these so called session musicians? Are you trying to say that they are only limited to a set nashville chart system that anyone can learn?
another perfect example of the NASHVILLE same ole sound. don't go to nashville to record. learn how and spend the money on your own studio... cause your never gonna make it ANYWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its all about money.
Does the phrase "phone it in" come to mind? If the same people are playing on everyone's record, is it any wonder nothing is actually sounding unique? So Glad Steve Earle used his own musicians from time to time.... and when he used studio cats, they were really good "Tony Brown Approved" studio cats..
what happened to creativity why not just sing karaoke im sick of all these singers out there who want to make a record but who are not musicians and dont care what "their" songs sound like. on the other hand it is nice to see real musicians working and getting paid
This is VALUABLE information folks. If your going to spend your daddy's hard earned money..... THEN GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH. Find a good studio, allow a producer to hire any number of Nashville studio muscians to play on your record.
The producer will give you advise to help your song shine. I've recorded on Music Row several times over a period of several years to complete my album.
It is the best way to go. You will be amazed! And you'll be happy.
Ooooh, the secret knowledge of "unspoken rules". Wow, I wish that after 25 years of playing, I knew this secret code. I'm obviously not one of these top, inner circle guys because every now and then I have to actually speak at sessions... unlike the pros who don't even need to speak.
Most of what was said here is garbage. Their is some truth to it, but it basically serves to get more work for his buddies... the same 10-15 guys that do 90% of the work.
I know when I'm playing a session I generally try to nail my part in one take so it leaves time for anyone else to make fixes if needed and if not it saves time and we can move on
With todays free media outlets,Software studios,You can make a big name for your band without nashville! Why waste your money! you can call yourself a Nashville recording artist without using big studio names.Call yourself whatever you want! The way to make a name for your band is persistence! Radio has free advertising for bands, use it for every gig,Get involved with gigs that will be advertised,Get your name out their everyday!somewhere, anywhere.Benifits
Awesome! Cut and paste music! No need to rehearse with a band, and every artist will sound like every other artist. There is no need to have a band anymore!
That s my problem with modern country music. They all sound the same, because they don t bring in there own band etc.. Same for the videos. They crank em out all day long. It s nice to say time in the studio, but if your live band sound Nothing like your cd, then what? (of course there are exceptions,Led Zeppelins live act was totally different than there studio stuff)
This is the problem with Nashville and it's assembly line, cookie cutter mentality. Everything sounds the freaking same. Technically clean, but dull, lifeless, no edge and muzak sounding. I wouldn't give this guy a dime of my cash. It pisses me off that they didn't like the innovators like Cash, Jennings, Owens, etc., then claim them as their own. Hell, they even claim Elvis now. The A list players are great, but I wouldn't waste my time recording there.
Nashville has the players it is true. However there bread & butter is with the larger studios so that's where you will find them A, B, & C, teams. But if your looking for a great deal and a super demo go hang out in the clubs attend writers nights there you will find great players who are willing to help you. In no time at all cell phones will be ringing and you will have your pickers. Then just settle a price with a smaller "digital studio"
The whole system is designed to protect the inner circle and keep young blood out. Don't dare bring anyone new in because it might threaten the status quo. There are many "amateurs" who play two times a day with each other and know how to read number charts. It's not rocket science. There's a lot of great players in Nashville, who aren't in your protected circle.
This is such bullshit and the total Nashville mentality. I agree with you about a good band. Solo artists can play the game all that they want to, but a band should not have to if they are good. For you younger bands and singers be aware that Nashville is fixed and they have their own little recording packages they sell. The cheapest is $8,000.00. This is such a production and a bunch of crap that they have going! More shit from Expert Village!
Think that you should read some of these other comments before you open your mouth any further! I can tell by your comments you probably know the biggest Nashville crook of them all Robert Metzger.
Dude, that guy has been soaking an acquaintance of mine in my town for years, telling him he's going to be a star. The guy can't carry a tune in a bucket. I just never had the heart to tell him he's getting scammed.
Save your money get a good demo of your band build your fan base and have fun and don't forget alot of the times you are just paying to say " I recorded in Nashville" I love that line or when the country singer comes out " Nashville recoring artist!!!" Don't get me wrong I like Nashville but it is a money hungry place just waiting to take your money and say " Great song, Have a nice day"
Sometimes you will have a song and the studio players will change and when it's done it's done (if it's demo stuff) and you may not like what they do to it.I play with a country singer who was crazy about studio musicians but they changed the song so much that I got a call to go in and fix what was changed and trust me lots of money went into the project.
I've played with the studio guys in Nashville and they are AWESOME!!!......BUT, Save your money stay in your home town and work out a demo and shop it around. If you are a singer trying to be some big star, Nashville is for you but if you are a band stay home and work with local recording studios.
I think you are missing the realization. The points you bring up have been brought up a million times by everyone else. The reality is that those session guys in Nashville are'one and done'. They need one take and they nail it and it is guarenteed to be better than %99.9 of anyone elses attempts.
Yeah but number one how can session players play several sessions a day? A tracking session can last up to 8 hours. Number 2 the people you practice with full time are the people that you want to use on the recording for the most part. I know studio musicians are fantastic players and I've played with a couple of them before. But if you have a good band yourself why not use them. Maybe hire one or 2 studio musicians to play extra tracks.
does anyone know a good studio i could rap at. ive considered omni but i dont want to sound like i know nothing when i contact them please any help

He told us nothing about how to pick them, just that we should.
um, ok.

Boy! Lots of bitter amateurs. I wish all skeptics would record at home and Nashville and compare the two. Apples and Oranges.
Until you've done that, ask yourself this question; 'Do I want the best possible sound for recordings I want to market?'
