  • Pretty and complex... I like to sit here and follow jazz with my own guitar but this I could not figure out were to start.

  • genio ,unico

  • какой молодец!

  • Someone needs to push my rectum back in now.......

  • he's GOD

  • Oh And Lenny Breau's Is a genius As Well

  • Hahaha This Man Was a Fucking Genius Clearly You Dont understand What The Picture Was That he was Creating To Say He Wasnt Expanding The Melody Which Was very Clear To Someone Who Feels What he Is Trying To Say

  • @LosNinosDeLaTierra82 why are you capitalising most words?

  • @Threepwoodist Idk ha habit lol

  • Never liked his solo playing, and this isn't selling me on it. He's got some chops, but talk about over doing it. None of these phrases expand the melody whatsoever, rather they cloud it and detract from the feel. His early stuff was much better. I think he took the virtuoso thing a little too serious. If you want a real solo guitarist check out Lenny Breau.

  • @ryanschell86 You are extra-super lame.

  • @Sunderlanding fukyu

  • His sense of phrasing is untouchable, but what really seperates Joe from the pack is the hidden counterpoint that links the chords and soloistic material, as well as infusing swing into his archane harmonies.. I hope his solos are anthologized like Parker's "Omnibook" so we can see his musical genious and study rather than copy it.

  • fucking nice , i love classical music , advanced kinds of true metal , and jazz , that's true fucking music , i love this video , the man is a beast!

  • just wonderful

  • very nice

  • that why it is PASS

  • Great Master

  • He displays more talent, knowledge, skill, and passion in a single bar than most guitar players in their lifetime.

  • Thank you, Joe. For everything.

  • Congratulations to a great master of the guitar, I think it's one of the greatest guitarists in the world!

  • that chord at 1:04 just killed me... it looks like some dimished chord but I'm not sure

  • @thom188 lol its just emaj7

  • @LTmattYT no listen well it's a major minor chord derived from the jazz or melodic minor scale... go to the time directly on the video cause the link doesn't work well

  • @thom188 it's emaj7#5 in fact

  • @thom188 emaj7#5

  • man i wish i could learn how to play like him... i just cant seem to put my fingers on the correct positions as fast as he can

  • Talk about inspiration to practice your guitar

  • Stunning

  • When I see a video that says awesomewelles90 plays circles around Joe Pass then I will count your opinion as valid. Until then you can shut the fuck up.

  • If you're focusing on the mistakes, then you're missing the whole point.

  • Giovanni Passalaqua sei un grande BRAVO!

  • Some of Joe's mistakes come out better than what we intend to do. How can one criticize this man? He is a master of his craft.

  • Giovanni Passalaqua....Bravo.sei un grande

  • Awesomewelles90 is a douchebag. muffs a note? are you kidding me? go fuck yourself

  • I must say this performance was a little sloppy for Joe. For example he muffs a note at 1:28. If you listen carefully you'll notice more. In a way I'm relieved as it shows that he is only human after all! Still in terms of expression it's beautiful. Regardless of technical inadequacies.

  • Youre a douchebag

  • Watch it from about 1:27 and you'll hear it if you listen carefully. Or maybe you weren't really listening to this performance.

  • Yeah, he muffs a note every now and then. But none of his mistakes are ever really deal breakers. Even in his cd's you hear those kinds of mistakes, but they don't really take away from his performances. What I find more interesting is that he never really hits any WRONG notes.

  • I wasn't saying that it detracts from the performance. I love Joe's playing. Although I don't really know what you mean about no wrong notes being particularly impressive. I don't think I've ever noticed any wrong notes in all of the live jazz albums I've listened to.

  • Joe Pass fans, a question for you: what's his best album of solo arrangements? Just picked up "Unforgettable", and aside from a few amazing tracks, the rest of the album was...well, forgettable. I know some of this was due to issues with his record label at the time, so no love lost for Joe there. But what album is him at his best?

  • Virtuoso, Virtuoso4, Virtuoso Live, Montreau75, Maybe..Virtuoso2...great version of "on Green Dolphin Street).

Montreau 75 was shot in video too..some of the videos are on youtube...check out his version of Nuages...and if you like uptempo numbers..check out his version of The Song is You.... the audio version of Cherokee......and not solos..but his stuff with NHOP are fantastic...and his version of Autumn Leaves with Sarah Vaughan is amazing too. They are on youtube.

  • WHYITSFUNNY, you said it all!! Maybe I should take up the kazoo!!!

  • like the last theme :)

  • Alright, that is IT! No one else is ever allowed to play this song ever again! JP got the final word, and I am afraid there is NOTHING you or I can add after hearing this!

    WICKED!

  • He the segovia of Jazz Guitar it s just out of controll!

  • istenem de tud:( a JóIsten áldja meg ott ahol van. Legnagyobb KIRÁLY!!!

  • Have anyone the pdf? Please! I'm looking for three days!

  • Amazing.

  • wonder what chet atkins thought of him or les paul or the other way around wonder if they ever meet each other

  • God damn. This is magnificent!

  • Yeah,this is a good one.

  • Wow...I like the part at 1:14

  • This ibanez jp-20 should have never been discontinued. All they have to do is re-name it .The other J.P. model is firewood.

  • Joe Pass me emociona.

  • Damn, 3:38 to the end, too good for words. I've yet to hear another jazz guitarist who even comes close. He's the perfect combination of spontaneity and refinement.

  • Joe Pass made it looked so easy. Not fair!!

  • im glad he messed up once...proves he is a human being after all:D

  • jaco fucked up a blues form once. check that video with frank gambale

  • the end is insane

  • Does anyone know what happened to the video of pass doing "What are you going to do for the rest of your life"? It was here fro years, now I cant find it and... it drives me crazy

  • 1:57...When Joe Pass made a mistake, I was sure something crazy was gonna happen...like a tear in the space-time continuum.

  • @Mike3303 LMAO

  • @Mike3303 that moment decided joe pass would eventually die.

  • @Mike3303

In his case a "mistake" sounds like part of the complete picture-another masterpiece, fully improvised jazz music. He's beyond guitar...

  • @Mike3303 such a stupid comment

  • What the hell is that last bit starting at 3:52? I know it's basically a 2-5 but where did he get all those chords from and why do they work so well?

  • to explain whats going on would be well over the 500 character limit. If you really want to know then get a jazz theory book and go nuts.

  • Well I know those chords, what they're named, a little on how they function, but how does he know/think to do that and do it so quickly while improvising? I'm strong on theory, but Joe was definitely not a theory guy. It blows my mind.

  • Joe learned by playing tunes. He had no one to play with as a child/teenager. His dad used to call him downstairs to play for him and his friends while they had a few drinks, and Joe always said his dad told him to:" Fill it up, fill all the spaces", so this forced him to learn to play all the traditional tunes popular in his day by ear and trial and error. That is how he instinctively knew what would sound better at the drop of a hat. "play tunes, you cant get no feel playing scales" J. Pass

  • That is so true.

  • Do not kid yourself. Joe knew his theory; the thing is he had developed to the point where he could allow himself to forget it and just play. In much the same way as you don't count your verbs, nouns, etc when talking. Joe was also a brilliant sight-reader.

  • I don't know about sight reading, I'm pretty sure he actually admitted in one of his videos that he couldn't read music.

  • its the 2-5 going to the real 2, so its 3-6-2-5.

and the 3 mostly sounds like a 1 chord so its kind of a 1-6-2-5.

  • Wow that makes perfect sense, thanks! You play guitar?

  • yap

  • is he improvising?

  • yep, improvisation is a key factor in jazz

  • yeah, i just wasn't sure if he was doing all the chord shapes improvised.

  • The word genius is often over used, but not here...classical Jazz at its best..words can't describe.

  • I have never heard the term classical Jazz for Solo Jazz Guitar

  • Me either, but it's classic to me.

  • actually, that term fits quite nicely with this piece. Jazz has many similarities to classical, in the process by which it is formed, jazz just uses different chords, scales and some standard progressions but they are both often very theory-based. Joe Pass' fingerstyle playing here is very classical guitar-like.

  • one of the greatest..

  • My guitar teacher was good friends with Joe and studied under him for some time. I asked him once, "do you think I'll ever play like Joe Pass?" and he said "Well, maybe now." :-(

  • you have to dedicate your soul to it man, and maybe go nuts in the process

  • Joe Pass is the best!!!!!

  • It doesn't get any better than this. Joe Pass and All The Things You Are.

This is truly music of and for the Gods!

  • Clearly an UNTOUCHABLE player.... soul, technique, speed, TASTE - that is the true Pass......

  • does anyone happen to know where to get a copy of the tabs for live versions of Joe pass' arrangment of All the Things You are?

  • Pass did transcribe some of his own versions of live songs, but not all... which do not include tabs. Nothing is exact to any live performance for the obvious reason that he is an improv player. If you just want to learn the song, pick up a chord chart or sheet music, pass uses the same basis as everyone else with little alterations to the arrangement.

  • I say it on everyone of these videos... BUT ... Joe was dead on the two nights of this festival. Does anyone know if there is an album or dvd available anywhere?

  • I once asked Herb Ellis who he thought was the greatest jazz guitarist ever. With no hesitation, he answered, Joe Pass.

  • Joe Pass is perfect complet guitarrist !! *****

  • the best........you are a teacher

  • Heaven will be so much fun!!!

  • magnifico jazz el mejor¡¡¡

    saludos desde mexico

  • Rest in Peace... my number one guitarrist.

Now you have Oscar Peterson with you... there is music in heaven more than ever!

  • he may play bach on guitar with such skill

  • He always makes it look so easy. That's a VERY hard playing to copy.

  • This guy é demais!!!!!

  • Beautiful rendition.
