guys keep in mind that DUST can massively increase ur temps !!! i dusted off my graphiccard and went from 85c to 65c!!!!!!! thats goddamn crazy, and now its starts to slowly rise again. id recommend cleaning every 6 months.

For anyone with a locked, non-reference 5850 that won't work with the "enableunofficialoverclocking" and unlock voltages, download RBE (radeon bios editor) and the asus 5850 unlocked bios (both easy to find on google). Then read the RBE tutorial on how to change the cards signature and flash the bios. This WILL unlock the cards mem and core clocks.

For locked voltage, download sapphire trixx utility and you will be able to change any locked 5870 or 5850's voltage.

Sorry dont work for my two xfx 5850s. Only way i got it to OC was flashing each one,THATS one at a time for dummies that dont know ! with the 5870 bios !BUT keep in mind doing this fucks your warranty ,unless you can flash it back,but chances are if you send it in for warranty its NOT WORKING ! So thus your fucked for flashing it back! so keep that in mind !

You need to go into your MSIAfterburner.cfg in your (C:) or where you installed afterburner. Open it with notepad and look for this line "EnableUnofficialOverclocking = 0". If it is 0 change it to 1 and save the file. Make sure you open it as admin or you won't be able to save the file.

I runned my 5850 at 850 mhz and 1137 volt. And played crysis for like 7 hours straight. And the realized my card didnt need that much voltage for 850 mhz. My cards fine but did I just short the life of card?

bare in mind guys, this only works with about 50% of the 5850's, because only the reerence ones or some other have voltage contole binded on the PCB.

omg you noob. the stability test is fail! you can't test it like 5 mins and then say "oh yea it's stable" LOL you really don't know ANYTHING about overclocking. it's not that easy as it looks like.

@1,2V it would never run stable in games with 1GHz. With 1,2V you will only reach 900 MHz for a stable result and 1230MHz for the memory. Try to set 940 MHz and your games will crash at random scenes. If you set 920 MHz it won't crash in most games but if you try to play sensible multiplayer games....

@Ultravore1 Of course its not easy to overlock. But his overclock is possible. My HD 5850 runs 930/1200 € 1,162V (HD 5870 voltage) without any problems and with stock cooling.

I tested with OCCT and games. Not all HD 5850's are the same.

There are some apps that don't crash like 3Dmark Vantage. you can run full test with 1400 MHz memory clock and it works... but of course it is NOT STABLE so it's just useless because you will get problems in games!

Please stop this tutorial full of fail to prevent that noobs use this settings.

With the current summer temperatures, the card idles at 55C and 68C under full load when OC. I need to kick the fan speed up to 60-70% when its OC and under full load.

The noise may bother some people, but it does not bother me.

@umran89 Im using stock coolers. Keep in mind I did this OC two months ago when ambient temperatures in my room were 20C at most times. However it is getting hotter here and now im seeing the card's temps rising beyond 65C when I OC.

quick question. when I click on unlock voltage control then it tels me to re open it. I do that and I still cant change the voltage. Its blurred out so I cant use it at all. I have a Asus EAH5850 if that helps.

@10pmStalker 1. go into your program files and open up the MSI afteerburner folder. (c:/program files/ MSI Afterburner)

2. Open the MSIAfterburner CFG file with notepad

3. Find this line: EnableUnofficialOverclocking

- change the value it has been set to from 0 to 1

4. Save the file and reset Afterburner if you have it running.
