  • What is the song at the end????

  • Hardy's love life was heartbreaking anyway, suffering years of torment and regret after his first wifes death. Tess of the Durbervilles was written during this depressive time period, 1891 i think, and its plain by the theme of the story the severe melancholy he was feeling.

But Tess was Thomas Hardy's favourite works, so much so he looked and loved on Tess as a real woman, and not just a work of fiction.

  • This brings tears to my eyes. This is like the saddest book and movie ever.

  • does anyone know how the main violin theme is called? it sounds so beautiful ♥

and i love eddie redmayne :)

  • this make me cry every time i play it! D:

i just hated it most when alec 'raped' tess and got away with it :(

having her being hung just for killing the man that ruined nearly her life, grrr!

but gemma did an absolutely fantastic job!! could not have been done any better!

  • It is impossible not crying with this...

  • i hated the ending to this it made no sense

i girl who can't keep her kid alive cause she way to scared to help it

a girl who cant stick up for herself even when deep down she knows she right and he wrong

a girl who get back with her rapist

i think that the book ending and movie was all just a quick way to end the book and movie itself.

She would never have killed that dude her personality doesn't go for that

  • @winterbrezze It depends on what way you see it. Most people see it was more how much she loved Angel, so much that she obeyed him even though deep down she knew that he was wrong for leaving her, to the point where she would kill and get killed for him. And it was Alec's insult towards Angel that triggered her to kill him. It's not really about whether or not she had the balls to do it, even the kindest of people have breaking points.

  • what is the song at the beginning?

  • @parsprincess The Snows They Melt the Soonest

  • ps....TESS CONSENTED!

  • she should have died a lot earlier in the story.

  • saddest ending to a film since godzilla vs destroyah, i had tears in my eyes, me a 27 yr old man.

  • @SuperMagnum83

    hahaha! Oh that's hilarious.

  • @sn95mustang yes but true

  • Awful version of Tess of the D'Urbervilles. The version from 1998 with Justine Waddell is the only one that does justice to the novel. Of course, thar's my very personal opinion...

  • Really thought at the end she found the peace that she longed for an Angel was left to live with the consequence of his actions...... His end is much sadder to me......

  • The music is just so perfect, not only for this scene but for the rest of the series. Simply amazing.

  • does anyone know what the music is?? with the violin? it starts at around 45 seconds into it. Its also used in some of the theatrical trailers. If anyone could tell me I'd be ever so happy, as I love the music SO much :)

  • @hannahateacow

Yes, its by a composer called Robert Lane, you may know him from the music to the Merlin series, the music is just named Tess according to his thread on the net.

  • I've watched this series so many times. At first I thought, Eddie as Angel was not fit at all, but then I realized Eddie perfectly fit as Angel... His lament never fail to makes me cry... It's sooo sad...

I love Thomas Hardy's love stories as deep, meaningful, genuine, and haunting

Why can't I find this kind of story anymore ? Anyone has some recommendations ?

  • I was so grateful to the BBC for filming this ending to my all-time favourite book. The previous versions ended with Tess's arrest at stonehenge. This gave Gemma Arterton the chance to break viewers hearts and Eddie Redmayne the opportunity to show the depth of Angel's remorse. Getting off with her sister (possibly) is a bit sleazy though

  • @chris276100 -- I suggest you read the book -- even though both the book and this portrayal leave the matter open, Tess herself actually encourages Angel to consider marrying her sister.

  • @OreadNYC I have read the book. but thank you for your suggestion

  • I don't know if i'm blind, but wheres the black flag? they should have the black flag.

  • @comeandfindmex it's super vague - around 2:08 you can see a small black flag appear at the top of the most distant building.

  • Publisher: "OK, she was raped, left home, abanoned by her husband, worked tirelessly on a farm, pursued by a psycho, evicted from home, and she's a murderer. What about the ending?"

Hardy: "I'm going to hang her!"

Publisher: "God damn it, Thomas! What's your next idea for a book?"

Hardy: "A guy called Jude meets Sue, and their miserbale lives causes their child to hang himself and his siblings."

    Publisher: "GTFO!"

  • @TenTonHorse Lol. For anyone who thinks Tess of the D'Urbervilles is miserable, try reading Jude the Obscure. I was depressed for a week.

  • Beautiful and piercingly sad.

  • Oh my gosh, whyyy did I watch that? I accidentally clicked of my last page onto this and got into the video... Aw I haven't even seen the series yet. :(

That was absolutely horrible to watch, I wanted to cry. :(

  • i hate this bit :'( tess of the d'urbervilles is such a brilliant book and movie ... i agree it just shows how crap men are to us!!!

  • Sickly and manipulative.

  • I loved this story, poor Tess, she goes through so much...

This makes me cry everytime I see it and the book does. Makes me hate people who put others through that sort of crap.

  • Love it! Love the book, love the movie! Everything! This made me cry.. :(

  • a very depressing book and movie (although i like reading it when i'm in that particular mood). makes me hate men lol

  • This is amazing, I can't get over how poignantly beautiful that violin solo is. And the entire scenes makes me cry. Love it <3

  • I thought Tess was beautiful and cried when I read the book and saw the movie:(. Shame men can't just love us for who and what we are. This is why I will not ever date again.

  • fuck off. and FYI I don't cook for ANYONE!

  • Jeez, that's a bit cynical. Ok Angel is a douche, but don't swear off men all together. After all a man did write this book.

  • @hschan4 A brilliant, brilliant man.

  • can somebody please tell me the name of the piece of music they play nearer the end (not the first piece, the violin piece) thanks!

  • I have no idea what this is or what just happened.

  • i've watched this a countless number of times a i sob my heart every time. the music is stunning and works so well! at 0:41 the music for some reason sets me off crying... it just creates such an atmosphere i can hardly bare it.

  • does anyone know where i can find this song that she first sings when she first goes to the dairy farm, and then again when she's chopping turnips?

  • @morag94x The Snow it Melts the Soonest. Anne Briggs does a good version. I don't know if you still need this information but thought it wouldn't hurt.

  • oh god, tear tear tear!

  • Am I a beast if I say that I felt no pity for Angel? I keep thinking it's his fault that this innocent, youthful beauty of a girl had to die. I mean he took her love and trampled all over it.

I do love this last scene. The first time I watched on BBC, I bawled like a baby.

  • I cried all over the book when Tess signed the letter to Angel 'your faithful heartbroken Tess'... Then my dad shouted at me and ask me to control myself when we watched this part on tv!

  • can anyone tell me

does TESS dies at the end of the story??

  • yes, you dont see but you know she is dead due to the flag rising and angel breaking down in tears as it does

  • Yes in this and in the book. She is hanged for the murder of Alec and it is implied that Angel goes off with (and marries) Liza Lu

  • YES. It's so sad. Read the book- it's amazing.

  • Yes.... she does. when a black flag is raised at the end of the book, it symbols a death

  • Yes she is put to death

  • SIGH...this movie is so so sad. It's nothing like the Jane Austin stories where there's love and happiness at the end. IF ONLY angel didn't leave her in the first place...if he stayed with her they would be happy. :(

  • i cry everytime

  • i cry everytime i see this. i love angel he is so cute :( xxx

  • This is such an incredibly sad clip. I love Tess of the D'Urbervilles, it's such a beautiful yet tragic story. I love this piece of music, it fits this scene perfectly. Does anybody have any idea as to what this piece of music is or who performs it??

  • I love the music in this, it was the same piece of music running throughout the series and they slowed it down here...heartbreaking.

  • i cry every time i see it lol

thats how emotional it gets me x

  • Since i had not read the books, i found the fact that she killed Alec shocking, after she said to Angel that it was "too late" :)

  • I think she killed Alec partly because she thought it would help Angel to "forgive" her "sin" with Alec. She loves Angel so much that she is willing to face death if it means he can finally forgive her. The huge tragedy is that Angel realises Tess had done nothing wrong, and that he should have stayed with...

  • ...her, only at the end of the story. He finally sees that she is a good person who has been destroyed by an unjust moral code. I think his tears at the end are tears of guilt, as well as grief. Did anyone else see it that way?

  • so so so so so so so so so so sad :(

    realy had to cry!

  • Sorry, I meant heart stRings. I'm terrible at typing!

  • The story, the music... someone has plucked out one of your heartstings and is unwinding your whole heart as if it were a bundle of wool.

Thomas Hardy and David Snodden are both geniuses (as is the composer, although I'm afraid I do not know his name.)

  • i cant find none of the dramas anywhere

  • ohh my god, how sad.

I really want to read the book now.

    I love Eddie Redmayne, i think he's a sexgod.

This was soo moving, i cried well bad

    :)

  • Such as sad story.

Gd, but bets not to read or watch it if you're depressed.

Someone upload the whole drama tho.

    And I LOVE THE MUSIC!

  • why did she kill him? OMG Tess! why????

  • "why did she kill him? OMG Tess! why????"

Um, because he stole her family name & honor & ruined her life & others live. That's why.

  • Im just saying If she did not kill him she would not be getting killed herself. It's not like I'm sticking up for Alec. God don't get so defensive over fiction.

  • Apologies for misunderstanding your original comment 'why did she kill him? OMG Tess! why????'

I was trying to answer what I believed was a question.

But its unnecessary to tell someone what is or is not an appropriate reaction to 'just fiction', since your comment isn't exactly lacking in emotion. All our reactions to the book/movie are valid.

Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding though.

  • eh...ok.

  • I have watched this so many times and this final scene always makes me cry, especially the bit when its just Angel and Tess dancing.

The music is so beautiful too.

  • why why why why WHY?!

  • I love Tess so much, she deserved so much happiness. This story is so tragic, its one of my fave stories ever. I love the book.

  • I agree completely.

  • I love how they show how happy they would have been had they danced the May dance. How many May dances have been missed...

  • I fuckin hate the book, but this seems good

  • Like many people before me said-this is just too sad to watch,to sad to stay calm...I had hope till the and but when I saw the ending...movies of this type just shouldn't end like this.Tess should live a happy life in the end.I just don't know what to say...

I'm a mess when it comes to sad endings :(

  • I'm heartbroken......i cried like baby... SO SAD

  • Such A Sad Ending!! Poor Tess!! He Couldnt Just Dance With Her At The May Dance!

  • This is almost unbearable to watch!!!!!!!

  • I'm fine until the clips of the may day dance start... then I cry everytime!! If only Angel had danced with her then!!!!!!!! jeepers!!

  • The song is called "The Snow It Melts the Soonest"

  • Ok, I NEED to know the name of this song!!! I turn into a blubbering mess when I see this scene.

  • She is sent to the gallows for killing Alec.

  • i dont get it?

    is she dead or something?

    and where is alec?

  • The raising of a blag flag above the prison signaled that someone had just been executed (Tess.)

Angel's watching from the hill above the prison with Liza-Lou, Tess' sister. Tess told him to marry Liza-Lou, who is a lot like Tess.

Tess murdered Alec to get away from him, which is why she was put in prison and hanged.

  • @Bardintraining Tess murdered alec because he had told her that angel basically didn''t love her and wouldn't ever come back. when angel then visited her, she found out alec had lied

  • well, tess killed alec so she was sent to the gallows to be hanged and die.

  • never seen such an amazing woman, and also never seen such a tragic ending... on the other hand, I wonder if there is a separate soundtrack CD. Masterpiece indeed.

  • this is so sad i nearly cried! gemma areteton is a brilliant actress and beautiful too! if i was tess i would have just ran away from alec and go and live with angel. didnt want her to die! =( x

  • Poor Tess ='(

  • I cried when I first saw this...the ending is too sad...I wish she never died. Her and Angel are perfect!

  • ahhh i really wanna watch this! i love the music in this scene its soo beautiful.

  • I totally disagree ...this movie was beautifully done and yes it diverts a bit from the words of Hardy but certainly not enough to cause any confusion. Gemma Arterton is the best Tess ever.

  • this is so different to the book, has anyone read it? the movie is quite disappointing after reading the hardy version

  • Yes I've read the book and found that this version is very loyal to the book. I adored this version so much I recently bought it and cried at this scene all over again.

  • I adore the book, and indeed I found the series quite faithful. It doesn't try to follow the text exactly, but evokes much the same atmosphere.

  • OMGADD ..i didnt know she was getting hanged there cuz i hadnt seen the 2nd episode but that is soo unbeleivably sad.. : ((((

  • so beautiful tess and angel!OMGoodness this shit is better than romeo and juliet!i want to read the book!

  • very sad moment was cryin weep weep

  • 2:16 = superb acting

  • i read and realized sometimes you think your the only one in pain when your not!!

  • if you have the whole thing can you upload it please please please!?

  • this movie made me want to cry! so romantically tragic!

  • I love this book, so I really want to see this movie.

  • the movie is so good i want to read the book

  • Gemma and Eddie rocked the final scenes of ths brilliant adaptation. So profoundly sad.

  • I love the sincerity in the sadness from 0:46 to 1:02

    Bloody Alec!!!!!

makes me cry all the time.

  • Poor Tess has the worst possible life ever imaginable...it's so sad. I am not one for crying, but I ball like a baby every single time I've watched this movie, especially the clip. Seeing Tess wondering what life would have been life if Angel had only danced with her... ah, tear.

  • I agree, I was watching Tess when it was really late and so I watched the entire series, I didn't go to bed until four and my eyes were puffy and tear streaked for hours! Favorite cryfest movie.

  • This made me cry when it was shown on TV =[ xxx

  • The violin at :50..... so beautiful.... so heart-breaking. I love this story, but it really is too sad.

  • i cried too at this part.. so sad! i love this moviee so much!!! omg!! can someone tell me where i could watch the WHOLE movie onlinE??!! plz!! ty :)

  • i dont know why but i love 1:24 it sound so beautiful

  • what's the guy that plays angel's real name??? i feel like i've seen him before....

  • his name is Eddie Redmayne, I think.

  • aaaahhhh thank you!!! XD

  • They JUST took down this series off the masterpiece website...Does anyone know where I can watch this? I don't have any closure...

  • I'm glad she faced the music, but why did she have to kill Alec. That made me distance myself from her character a bit. This movie made me so sad and so mad. If they had just done things differently none of these things would have happened. Uggh!

  • i was sobbing during this part.....:(

  • Eddie Redmayne's best moment in this mini.

  • she suffered soo much......

  • i cried sooooo much at this part.... i love this program!!! and ii find it really sad when tess has the memories and then you finaly see tess and angle dance....

  • This is my favorite movie i always cry at this part :'(

  • im guessing he married her sister in the end- it was her dying wish

  • I'm totally with you there. I mean could they get more depressing?

  • What I dont understand is why didnt Angel forgive Tess? I mean if he loved her so much why did he leave her and lie to his dad and then get that stupid sickness and ruin EVERYTHING!!?!?!? gosh! i am so angry with him! well, at least he came back, right? i cried my heart out that tess died cuz i thought that she should have lived because of all that she had been through. *tear*

  • Angel what a dumb ass

    u bastard

  • I think there is a good point here. Angel's "judgement" of Tess was part of the chain of events that destroyed her. He let her down badly; although in his defence it seems that he had been raised to believe in a very strict, inflexible and dogmatic moral code. He possibly realises his mistake at the close of the story?

  • Nooooooooo. . . :'(

  • Until I officially watched this on PBS with closed captioning, I didn't catch that the Lord's Prayer was being recited in the jail.

Tess's face, the music, the prayer and Angel's tears alltogether make it heartbreaking to watch!

  • *wipes away tear* I like to imagine that he fought for her tooth and nail, and he won so she didn't die and they lived happily ever after. At the same time, I like the ending, it's not only bittersweet, but also more realistic as to how things would have worked out. This was the most depressing wonderful movie I have ever watched. Caught it on LPB but I'm thinking of buying so I can watch it over and over until I get tired of it(which is never) BTW who just knew immediately Alec was a bad guy?

  • Jessieboo1991, I did! =) Alec is awesome, but he was suspicious also...Angel & Tess! xD

  • lolz. I know right, it's like man Alec was kinda sweet ans sincere in his own way but he just LOOKED like the bad guy. lolz

  • Saw this on television tonight and was drawn to it. PBS always has such great adaptions . This story is so tragic. Can't wait for the Wuthering Heights one.

  • this has been one of the most depressing/unforgetful movies i have ever seen, and the music chosen for it made it more memorable for me...sigh

  • did angel married Tess little sister?

  • MZL125, yeah...I think so. I, personally, didn't want him to do it, although it was Tess's last request. ='( Oh, god, this movie made me so sad. I practically cried, but it was beautifully done. *sniff, sniff D:

  • Cried my eyes out. Truly, one of the saddest movies I've ever seen. What a portrayal of love, yet unfortunate loss. Thanks for putting this particular video up.

  • So depressing. Tess and Angel were so cute together!

  • I never cry at television shows, but this made the tears stream down my face!

  • gosh. that was too emotional.

    i can't stop crying...!

  • oh, dear goodness...I've never seen a male so beautiful! What is Angel made of? Gold and cotton candy?? I love this movie!

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! poor Angel i want to cry I wish they didnt do that to tess to bad im crying that is sooooo sad don't worry Angel i will be there for you always

  • OMG!! WHY ANGEL????

    He Looks Soo Sad........

    What HAppened anywayz

  • Wait a second, did she die? Is that what happens?

  • Well, you asked... I must warn that this is a SPOILER, but I guess the video itself is one anyways, so it can't hurt much... Yes, Tess does die, she hangs for murder, I think. She is charged with the murder of Alec, who in this version is played by Hans Matheson. Haven't seen this version myself, I'm hoping to someday as it looks wonderful! It's been a while since I've seen or read this, but I'm sure that's what happens. **

  • did she killed him or did she take the fall for it?

  • Ok. Again, SPOILER, but I was asked, so I'll answer. She did kill him, she stabbed him, and was found out because of the stain of blood she left on the floor.

  • Yeah you're right, she does hang for murder.

  • wish someone would post the miniseries...i cant watch it because netflix doesnt havent and there isnt any website where you can.will you pretty please post the whole miniseries!!???

  • omg.

i saw this a couple of weeks after it was aired coz all my friends and mum told me not to watch it- too sad. omg they were so right! im glad i watched it. amazing. but i was depressed for almost a week afterwards.

    !!!!!

feel sorry for all of them, esp angel.

  • man i cant stop from cryin

i dont say anithing else omg is so.....i cant stop my tears.....:(

  • Thank you both JessieSparrow and leafygent. I adore celtic and other british folk music. I listen to Mckennitt and Enya but it is not enough. Do you suggest any other singers of that kind. ? I watch that part of movie everyday :)

  • i havent seen the movie, but i read the book, really emotionally strong and sad...

  • When I started watching this when it was on I thought it'd be a nice period drama but it's so depressing! Poor Tess, nothing ever went right for her. And Angel is gorgeous!

  • pleaseeeeeeeee do you know the music is it cranberries? i have to find it.

  • The music was done by Rob Lane, and can't buy it anywhere! But I have made this last scene into a track though the sound effects are still in it but I can always send it to you, if you wish =]

  • Oh me too please.I love it.I would love if you could send me a copy too.I can't find this beautiful piece by Rob Lane.

  • I know it's a little late now, but if you still have the track left I would love to have it as well! I'd be very greatful if you could send it to me.

  • @clindroth did you get it...coz I have a copy.

  • @prawnbutters Oops, sorry... Seems like you got my message twice.

  • The song that is playing when Tess is in the prison cell is "The Snow it melts the Soonest" an old folk song - listen to the Anne Briggs version its beautiful.

  • Oh & does anyone know what song this

    is playing?

  • It is very heartbreaking.

Her life was a mess all because

of what Alec did. But I think

both Gemma & Eddie were convincing

    as Tess & Angel.
