I really thought with the way he played this tournament, he was going to have another great run for the rest of the year. Then the next slam rolls around and I see he loses in the quarters for the first time in years and I was just shocked. And then it happened again at Wimby. And now he hasn't won a slam since this tournament. Like, what happened?
Bear in mind I'm one of those people who only have access to the slams because my parents don't wanna pay for tennis channel.
@sasook Just seemed to lose his "touch". He became far more conservative and guys with a lot of power a la Soderling, Tsonga, and Berdych could beat him. His BH is also really a liability against the Top players and thats why he has struggled. Lost to Novak at IW, Rafa at Miami, Melzer at Monte-Carlo, Nadal at Madrid, Gasquet at Rome, made the Final of the French but faded AGAIN. Lost to Tsonga at Wimby and Montreal, smoked by Berdych at Cincy and blew another 2 set lead against Novak at NYC.
@federerbestclass Nadal was so tired. He was injured and sickness and MONO and SLUMP of head, arm, ankle, stomach, brain, eyes, elbow, celulitis, fingers, liver, bowels, etc. classy. love Rafa:)
i think the match of the tournament was Davydenko vs Fed. and Roger definitely stole the W from denko with the bathroom break. All feds fan need to admit that Federer played a mind trick and Davy fell for it. Bathroom break hit 2 birds w/ one stone = 1. stopped Fed from panicking and 2. gave Davydenko more time to think and resulted in panic/choked.
Federer won that match not with physical tennis, but with intellectual tennis. It's too bad Denko never recovered cause he was playing amazing.
@wanameetyou maybe, but nadal pulled a medical timeout while petshner was about to serve to throw him off. after you stop playing for 5 mins its hard to get warmed up to your max again.
This interview shows how much this guy knows about tennis, thats the whole point. He's so good at Slams, because in the 5 set encounters, he's got time to adjust his game, which no one really reads, he's got so many options in his arsenal, so.. in order to beat him a man s gotta pass so many tests, executing perfect shots... And Roger is just able to produce more of those, cause it's a ll about...how much effort you put in the shots... He does it more naturally than anyone else.
I think it is just his knack from trying to pick up some lingo or mannerisms that other English people say. I mean, in a way, it would be equivalent to someone pausing with "uh" or "like" but obviously in his case, it is "you know." Maybe it is his way of buying a little more time to think of a question, which is understandable, rather than pausing and saying nothing. He does say it quite often, but I say many small quirks over and over, and I picked up English since I was five so yeah :p
It happens when English is not your first language. I speak many languages as well and sometimes its hard to speak pure English when you have many other ways of saying something. Its even worse for chinese people and africans to explain themselves without pausing to think of the right word.
You know what I find to be absolutely amazing about this interview? Roger Federer grew up speaking languages other than English, and he's a professional athlete, not a college-educated man. Yet he speaks English incredibly eloquently--better than most Americans. Really, the only deficiencies he has with English--and very minor ones at that--are with some of the colloquialisms. I suspect that Federer is a highly-intelligent guy, and if never exposed to tennis, would have excelled in anything.
The thing is, Federer's English improved ridiculously since 2003. I think he'd be interviewers' favourite player to do an interview on, simply because he provides an eloquent and insightful response every time. AND we all witnessed his classy sense of humour during Courier's interview of him after Tsonga's match.
@masmddds tennis players have sooo much free time like in the airport or just sitting in their hotel room. Besides training in the morning and the afternoon they are very bored because most of the time they are resting or travelling.
Don't forget his mother was South African, so he spoke english from a young age. But you're right, he is good with languages. He also speaks french extremely well. It does really show his intelligence. I really don't think you get to that level without being a clever guy in the first place.
Same goes for Nadal. Also an intelligent player who recently described Federer in his book as a guy naturally good at everything he does...
I really like Federer. Obviusly his game is spectacularly god but as a man he is not falsely modest. he tells it like it is. He is good and knows it but respects the opponent. Some say he is arrogant but since when is false lying modesty to be praised?
Federer is my role model for being a quality person.

this one is really good. When he feels insecure he is saying "you know".
He seemed to be more fluent in french and of course german and swiss german.

it has improved greatly since then, i remember the wimbledon final of that year his accent was so thick in the trophy ceremony.
he should get the nobel prize, and an oscar and every other award possible!!!
