I want to own this on double vinyl again, but I'm too scared to make the purchase! The way this whole soundtrack made me feel when I was a kid.... it totally overloaded me with fear. My sister had the War of the Worlds poster in her room and I would run by her door hoping the aliens wouldn't see me!
the first time i heard this was i think in 1979/80 at night in the radio, they passed all record and i was amazed by the music, next day trying to buy the album, but couldn´t find it anywhere, until a swedish friend that had the record lend it to me and i recorded it on tape. i was 17.
have the vinyl, cd, every different version of the films the book and even the recording of the news broadcast version the yanks did..... its an awesome story wich ever way you look at it.... but the musical is deffinately my favourate.
my grt uncle eddie played the combe and bog roll on most of the tracks. if ya listen really closely...one can hear the sound of his richards lining up in turn within the confines of his departure lounge. smashing aint it??? ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. for the none poo drs out there, departure lounge is ya colon (rectum) botty cave. The mitten of stench. ha haaaaaaaaa
I always hated the movies because they portrayed the Martians as massive and indestructible beings, when in reality, they weren't all too hard to kill. When one faction is completely invincible, it makes a pretty boring story.
In short, read the book, and listen to this album, don't watch the movies.
This used to 'proper shit me up' when i was a kid. I remember my dad used to play it and it always seemed to be dark and gloomy outside. The martians used to, and sometimes, still do haunt my dreams.
A quite pleasant dream could turn nasty by glancing to the horizon and seeing three or four fighting machines heading in my direction.
I'm nearly thirty now and have two little boys. They absolutely love WOTW but show no fear. If they ever find something scary I'm in trouble!!!
Noone would have believed in the early years of the 21st century that Morgan Freeman would even CONSIDER attempting a remake of Richard Burtons CLASSIC soliloquy!!!
If you have never listened or owned this EPIC then sorry you should'nt even be on this planet. This is the greatest album ever to recorded in the history of mankind.
My father gave me around 200-300 vinyl records when I was about 16, and insisted I played Dark Side of the Moon and this. Fucking hell it's stayed with me to this day. Epic.
@chocomog35 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' by Pink Floyd was an interesting record & it does have a lot of similarities to this, in terms of sound effects, but I heard it much later when I was an adult. My memories of Jeff Wayne's record 'TWOTW' go back to when I was 9. I recently heard this when I was in my early 20s & it brought back a whole bunch of haunting memories, but it didn't scare me like it used to. I'm looking forward to the new version out in June next year!
the movie shouild off bean a trilogy like 3 movies the movie the made was shit it was just get it out for xmas for dosh really disappointing allso they never had this famous tune on it too!
Spielberg's movie was awful. Switching the story from England to America was pointless, and the story consisted basically of Tom Cruise's character, who literally could not make an edible sandwich in the film, trying to dump his kids on his ex wife. Hey, that's way better than watching HMS Thunder Child standing up to Martian war machines!!!!
@DarthCipient - the movie was not that good - but i see that the movie was suppose to follow an everyday man and we see it from his point of view and that's why we always follow him
i have to agree with everyone who thought the film was a load of shit. the musical is unbelievable i love it.. and you are better off letting your imagination tell the story its better than lookin at that tom cruise fuckin eejit
@mrminty28 The only note-worthy things about the Cruise-Spielberg film were the special effects and the Newark and other NJ locations with which I was familiar.
@mrminty28 You shut up lol. That was an awesome movie. And if you payed any attention chicken shit, you'd see that Speilberg included a lot of things from the original. IE coming up from the ground, hiding in the basement cellar, only revieling the martians twice, and, most importantly, the epic tripod "aloo!" shut up XP
@6364gg2 Even so, the film was not a patch on the book or the Jeff Wayne musical. Nothing on the silver screen has ever done this story the justice it richly deserves =(
@mrminty28 That movie wasn't bad for what it was trying to be: a fast-paced action movie. The atmosphere couldn't possibly rival this of course but I don't think it did a bad job in that respect either.
@mrminty28 What about the upcoming game? Personally, I would've had Jeff Wayne's design and music for it. They could still keep Patrick Stewart's voice if they wanted.

the movie didn't suck, at least it was way better than that silly "indepence day" with Will Smith wisecracking and hollering when half of the mankind has been exterminated.
Dakota Fanning is a gifted young actress and will appear in quality movies in the future. Critics like her too.
The aliens in the movie were not from Mars like in H.G. Wells novel from 1898.
No the movie sucked, Dakota Fanning is retarded, and critics just think she's talented because she's young.
But then again I don't give a fuck what critics think about anything. They're no better at watching movies than I am so why would I take their advice? I know what kind of movies I like and they know what kind of movies they like.

across the gulf of the seas, minds immeasurably more evil to ours regarded this island with envious eyes, and slowly, and surely, they drew their plans against us.
and that's how it was for the next ten years, German technology developed, beautiful but some how disturbing. Anti-war assured us we were in no danger, they were convinced there could be no threatening thing on that remote country.
The chances of anything coming from Germany are a million to one..... but still they will come.

@Robi6942 I think Morgan did a nice job.

@njva17420
Nice .... yes .....nice ...but what is nice if not mediocre
BURTON owns those lines ad infinitum - I guess in Morgans defence somebody had to do it
Robi6942 1 year ago
@Robi6942 I would NEVER consider Morgan Freeman's voice as mediocre. And "nice" is not equivalent to "mediocre" anyway.
njva17420 1 year ago
@njva17420 Morgan is undoubtedly one of the greats. Speaking strictly about his rendition of the opening monologue - he (IMHO) falls short.
Oxford should update their definitions of "NICE" to include: Cute but not for me or Ugly but fuckable.
