@Evalopo - In Bach times women were not allowed to sing in church. So all Soprano and Alto Arias and Choir Music from Bach were written for boys, also THIS aria. So this is of course an aria for a boy!

@aquaria85 Thanks for your answer, but what i meant was this: a child cannot put "soul" on that aria, that is why this is not for children to sing. Of course Schreier sings it very very well, but there's no ressonance on "other levels"... Thank you also for posting that video.

This is one of the very few recordings of:Peter while he was a treble but he sure made up for it in his later years- much to our benefit. Even as a child Peter had a remarkable voice and I can see now why he became one of the most renowned tenors of our time.

(Für meinen Geschmack wird zur Zeit viel zu wenig von und mit Schreier gesprochen.... - ist großes Defizit...)

Merkwürdig, nie gehört! Panito ist viel besser, hihihi! Und warum hat Schreier als Erwachsener die Nutzung von Knabensolisten kritisiert? Das ist ungerecht...! Na, gewiß haben ihre Jahre als Kruzianer viel in seiner späten Karriere beeinflußt.

@tkbewunderin79 - wahrscheinlich war Panito als Knabe besser. Er hatte ja auch mehr Ausbildung. Die Kruzianer erhielten nach dem Krieg nur sehr wenig Gesangsuntericht. Aber die Musikalität ist ergreifend und nicht ohne Grund ist er einer der besten Tenöre geworden. Von Panito hört man nicht mehr viel. Er wird wohl nie so erfolgreich werden wie Peter Schreier.

@aquaria85 Ich habe mir beide Versionen angehört. Die beiden haben ähnliche Knabenstimmen und Stimmführung, an vielen Stellen fehlt die Tragfähigkeit einer ausgebildeten gemischten Stimme, bei beiden, was zu einem gebellten Klangbild führt, weil auf den Registerpassaggios. Nur Schreiers Aufnahme ist von 1949, d.h. nicht nur Mono sondern auch viele Nuancen der obertöne konnten Micros noch nicht auffangen. und daher kaum vergleichen.

Panito interpretiert anders als Peter Schreier, aber er ist weder besser noch schlechter. Er ist eben einfach ein genialer Sänger, genau wie Peter Schreier. Beide zwingen mich immer wieder dazu Gefühle zu akzeptieren. Sie sind einfach perfekt, ich werde ihren Gesang mit ins Grab nehmen.

Panito has the better technique and more experience, Schreiers voice sounds kind of rough but its breathtaking. Never heard an boy with singing with such a natural power voice.

I love his boy recordings. You just listen here his musical intentions and his later tenoral timbre. And thats true: You can't compare an 60 years old recording and the boys-voice-education in the destroyed Dresden with modern conditions. And Schreier is hardly before puberty vocal change here. There is another recording of Britten. And he is also brillant there. And don't forgot he only needed studying singing 3 or 4 years becoming a tenor after that vocal education.

Thanks to Harnoncourt, Leonhardt and others who are looking for an authentic but still vital performance practice of Bach the recent  recordings and performances quality is much better than in the 1950s. One compare the young Peter Schreier with Panito Iconomou. I can say only: Schreier as tenor is brilliant but not as boy alto.

Don't forget under which circumstances Peter Schreier became a Boy Alto. The Tölzers (like Panito) start training their boys at the age of 6! Peter joined the choir at the age of 10 in 1945 just after the war. They lived in cellers in Dresden and were singing in villages around Dresden to get food for the always hungry boys. The boys didn't get singing lessons at this time.

Also Peter joined the choir as a Boy Soprano, got trouble with his voices, had to make a break for some month and became an alto at the age of 12. So he was singing as an alto not even 3 years, when this was recorded! Totally different situation to Panito!

jeder fängt mal klein an, auch ein peter schreier ;)

es gibt ne ganze cd von ihm als knabenalt. eine richtig gute altistin kann das sicher ergreifender singen, bzw wärs es schlimm, wenn sie es nicht könnte, oder? aber das stück hier zeigt ganz gut, dass es durchaus möglich ist als kind schon bach ganz ordenrlich zu singen ...
