This is exactly the type of video i was looking for, something that would break down mechanics as perfect as this....Gotta give props to Bill Walsh for being such a great QB coach.
joe montana is good. but for me i dont do the 7 drop step. it just an advantage for the outside rusher to use his speed. my 7 drop step is a "slow" 5 drop step
Class and grace under pressure. Knowledge is power and understanding their strengths and weaknesses is what allowed the 49ers to be and unstoppable force.
I love Montana's comment, "It's because I couldn't throw hard". Great humility, by the way. Nice trait, since he also knew his assets (confidence in winning was his best asset). But he was catchable! How many times have you seen a QB rifle a ball that his receiver could not handle (Bret Favre?).
Montana epitomized the expression, "Git 'er done" when it came to his performance.
The reason that the 3, 5, and 7 step drops are so important to the passing game is to set up the "D" for play-action effects on the LB's reaction timing. this helps the receiver to gain separation. It also helps fake draw, fakes hand offs so that the LB's are frozen for a second in sweep fake running pass plays.
@Rasdrizzy - Part of the west coast quick drops was necessity because when Walsh went to Cinci their O-line was lousy and it was a way of avoiding sakcs.
Man they were the greatest

@mr3ggroll Yeah, the speed of the defenses makes a 7 step more risky.
