I was told that DJs were asked not to play this on stations due to the heartbreak of our soldiers serving "over there". I also thought that Tom T recorded it. However, I do have an 33 LP of Bobby Bare doing it. Very, very super but sad true Country ballad!
I have looked for Jimmy's version since 1970! Found it by several others but they didn't compare. Thank you so much for posting this song. My story is the same except for the ending and it takes me back to that cold February day in 1970 when my fiance left O'Hare for Viet Nam.
Thanks for sharing this, I have looked for it for years and was a nice surprise to find it here. Have been listening to it everyday and sometimes more than once. Thanks again.
Written by the great Tom T. Hall.- DO I HAVE A STORY TO TELL ? !!! 1st- The 1st time that I heard this I was loving it. I new what the ending was going to be,and when it came I cursed out loud and said you f___ing bitch. This is the ONLY song that has ever made me angry. 2nd - A few years later I found another record by Jimmy. I called Shelby Singleton Production(s). The man gave me the phone number of the producer - Little Richie Johnson in Belene, N.M. On 12/23 he sent me the 45. got it 12/24
My father and I are probably only a few people who call this one of their favorite songs. I only wish he were alive to here this. I never could find a copy of this before he died. Afterwords I found a 45 in very poor shape, but at least it was something.. Now I have this wonderful recording. Thank you so very much. Dana Yeager
Very good Jimmy, we love that song. Do you remember someone named Tex Baker? I meet him last week and he knew a Jimmy Snyder from years back, thought it might be you.
