I think at Woodstock, she was one of the few entertainers who were not somewhat intimidated (also The Who) by the crowd and the helicopters. Even Joplin was. It wasn't until we were 20 miles away (in our 64 VW bus) that we started to realize that this could be big. And I agree with Townshend. But it was sorta like doing something very awesome, yet having it feel very terrible with no redeeming quality (except in the retro).
How beautiful the way she talks about her expierence and how the song "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" came to her. It's just one of God's many wonderous gifts He's bestowed apon us to be able to write poems and songs and sing. To just have that moment where the moment itself brings that out of you is an incredible feeling. I wish everybody could expierence that, but not everybody is gifted in music or expression through writing. Sadly, some don't know how to express at all!
This amazing song , sung by this angelic voice is a gift to each and everyone of us. Melanie is one of the beautiful people of our time. The '60s were without question the greatest time in history, where have all the beautiful people gone. Though I wear a shirt and tie I will always be a hippy deep inside . PEACE
..a sweetheart and a songwriter!(How horrifying-jus kidding-if anyone had all these little children and grandchildren runnin around..!)PEACE LOVE JOY and UNDERSTANDING!
I love how she describes Woodstock as "something really important". And it was. And it is. And it will always be. It wasn't a joke. It wasn't trite. It'll never be passe', except to those who never "got it" in the first place. She brings the emotion and joy of that time back to the surface! This is a beautiful clip.
Santanas drummer was 16 years old when he played woodstock. Promoter Bill Graham offered his advice for the event under the condition that they play. The rest is history. Go to Santana here on you tube and at the end of there performance you will see the keyboard player talking with Bill.
i worked for her and her hubby hippy producer for a decade, good people with love of life and living and she cherishes family, music and she is a lovely lady good mom and great wife, she was very very special to me for that period of my life and we shared some good times b/c of her artistry and love of life and those special times late sixties early seventies...lost touch with her in recent years but special memories linger on
thank you for sharing! this is very rare indeed! as far as i know, she travelled to the spot by helicopter because the roads where jammed. her mom was with her, melanie was, i think, only 18 when she got on that stage alone, and scared to death as 500,000 ppl where there, staring at her! the rock myth says that she composed "birthday of the rain" at the spot, because it was raining during her performance.
She was 22. Almost as young as many there. Almost. I have a few friends that were there at 14-15. Santana's drummer was 19 I believe. To be young again! Peace on,,,,

LOL you guys, come on, don't give out TMI about having "crushes" on her, LOL. I saw her as a very special person who has a tremendously beautiful voice that reverberated all around the globe, heck even outer space along with Voyager or Pioneer. Thanks so much for sharing your spirit, Melanie! Wildlyfer
The words to "Lay Down (Candles In the Rain)" that's what she wanted to say about it! AWESOME!!!! Such an amazing singer! "We were so close there was no room. We bleed inside eachothers wombs. We all had caught the same disease. And we all sang the songs of peace!"
Wow conkyjoe, this is really something. I just watched the other Miami video footage from '69 too, the 'Lay Down' clip, which was as fascinating as this. Some amazing pieces of Melanabilia... Thanks so much for sharing them.

Wow, like that's so HEAVY man. Pete Townshend said it best: "Woodstock was not what rock and roll is about. I fucking hated it."
