  • Daniel, love all your covers! Tom Tom club is Awesome! When are you coming to New York? You have to tour the States man. Please come!

  • I was waiting for Johhny marr to appear there! Classic tune man! As the yanks would say "good job"

  • sounds amazing, what amp are you using for the ric? cheers

  • Good job! I revisit this cover from time to time. Like it better than BBs. Never gets old.

  • Lovely, lovely.

  • nice guitar

  • Sounds great! You must be a big fan of John Porter, I noticed you do quite a few numbers that he produced (and played on as well).

Like your guitar collection too (you must be wealthy).

  • you are the marr. i cant stop watching this

  • Beautiful rendition...I've replayed this thing 10 times already...Well played, sir!

  • I never tire of this post.

  • it's good stuff

  • Fantastic!!

Done homage to a great song.

    Love It!

  • Great sound

  • Awesome job! The Ric sounds amazing, and your playing is first rate!

  • Excellent playing, love the 2nd guitar part.

Any idea where i might find the tab for this? If not i guess i'll just have to learn the hard way from your video!

    Brilliant work, well done.

    Regards Ricky.

  • Nice acoustic version

  • Johnny marr ???

  • So well played...one of my favourite songs of all time.

  • Brilliant. I watched through all your videos quite a while ago and was totally impressed with your style of playing, you share my taste in guitars, artists, and beautiful jangly sounds. Pleased to stumble across this :)

  • I know this was done some time ago, but as I said on Facebook, I can't imagine a pop song sounding as good as this. Perfect in every way.

  • NIce!

  • what an awesome recording job, and the playing was just as awesome. not to mention BB for the song, love him.

    TDM

  • This is wonderful, you deserve 5 stars!

  • Lovely...

  • pure class.

  • wow, beautiful stuff. i'm trying to get back to my 'roots' & can't believe i've neglected these damn fine songs that inspired me to pick up a guitar in the first place. your playing is so so so sweet. inspirational.

  • lovely. Reminds me on 1985. Thanks a lot

  • Hey Daniel,

Great work on this one. I bet you could make some money on the 12-string tab you play here... Any chance on posting it? I'm sure others would love it too!

  • My favorite video here

  • Great playing. I love that ric... I'm a rick owner as well, there's nothing like them.

  • Really nice production job and playing.

  • Down here we have a lot to thank the Poms for...now let's see, umm, discovering the place and sending our criminal ancestors here, then cricket, rugby, female backpackers, but mostly music. The Beatles, The Stone Roses, Zeppelin, New Order and THE SMITHS!!! That is Ric tone as it should be.

  • im american and i am down

  • bravo old chap well done must have encore thanks for posting!

  • Still listening to this

  • Stunning!

  • this sounds so lovely:)

  • SOunds as if JOhnny Marr himself was playing!!! BRillianT!!!!

  • This is simply lovely.

  • Hey well played!

  • please please please could I have a tab for this? Been trying to learn it for ages!

  • @braddersthemod daniel earwickr doesn't do tabs. if anything he wants all of us to learn through experiences and with our ears :D

  • Great sound!

  • Daniel, I find your playing inspirational. Caused me to spend many hours attempting to learn some of Marr's riffs. I've followed and seem him play intermittenly since 84, through ups and downs. Have you thought of attempting any of his The THe stuff, or Electronic?

Also love the 660, I just bought a 620 which I adore, I'm l/h and have never seen a 660 so don't know how different they sound, but in your video sounds beautiful.

    N

  • Incredible!

You've got it right man, Loved it!

  • Wow - that's outstanding. never been inspired to post anything before right now. Thx

  • Really nice job. Great to hear a player and not just all the hacks dragging their gear out

  • Billy is one of the greatest raw musicians of our time

  • Hey what a fucken great sound!

  • is it possible to post a guitar lesson of this?

    would be great!

    very good cover ! 5*!

  • Johnny Marr of course.

  • that is beautiful. Much more beautiful that the song, which I love.

  • just amazing. thanks!

  • great!

  • nice sound

  • This is brilliant. Great post.

Marr was invincible. But how did you manage to extract that Marr guitar line from the recording?

I wish Marr's line was up in the original mix. Do you reckon it was a contractual mix down?

  • Tremendous! Sounds wonderful. I'm going to try and learn this by watching your video. Thanks!

  • Thanks Daniel, I really enjoy listening to this

  • A lot of BRAGGing in your video but it's very good anyway

  • Great sound, great job. Didnt realise how good the guitar lines were in this song. I love the chords at :53

  • It's wonderful. Thank you.

  • I do love this arrangement - this is the video that I go to when I need to cheer up, or chill out.

Has so much depth to it - awesome job!

  • Hi Daniel. Sounds fantastic! Does Your RIC 660/12 uses the 7,4 kOhm or 12 kOhm Toasters? In my ears sounds like the brighter 7,4 kOhms.

    Best Regards

  • If only I knew!

  • Very easy: Take an Ohm-Meter (multimeter) instead of the amplifier, turn all pots on the guitar full on. Then first switch to the bridge pickup and look how much Ohm, then to the neck pickup and look, or vica versa. Not both pickups.

  • @danielearwicker fantastic!.. as per usual nuff said

  • thanks! any chance of posting a tab of this? your arrangement is superb!

  • Compliments *****! That sounds so great!

  • Hi Daniel, what a superb sound. I have just bought a 660-12. I hope it sounds like yours. What make and guage of strings are you using? Also I see you are using a capo, have you tuned it to Eflat? regards Brian.

  • Hi Daniel, would it be possible for you to give me an answer to my question about the guage of strings that you use. Regards Brian.

  • Superb, as usual. It's a credit to Marr's music that people like you spend the time working out how to play it.

  • Really really lovely. Thanks mate.

  • fantastic Braggs masterpiece or should i say Marrsterpiece

  • You fucking Brits always obsess over the music I love and post it on here. Good on you....

  • Beautiful, beautiful... you helped me get through a Friday afternoon at work

  • Thanks a lot. So great. I´ll throw my guitar out of the window n o w. ;)

  • Absolutely stunning. I love it!

  • Bravo! Not just this one, but all your your videos!!

  • You Sir are as handy as a small pot. I'm going to replay this a few zillion times with my tele in hand.

  • Ive just ordered my rickenbacker 660/12, arrives next week, if it sounds anything like yours, I'm well pleased, cos that sounded brill. Thanks!

  • Awesome! I love Marr man hes so great

  • Very nice too.... One of my fave B B tracks with the added Johnny Marr Rickenbacker sound.

    Magic !

  • Very nice too.... One of my fave B B tracks with the added Johnny Marr Rickenbacker sound.

    Magic !

  • Fine work, really love this Billy Bragg's tune

And imagine what the Smiths could have done with this song!

Even the lyrics seem to come from Mozz' world...

  • Don`t forget Johnny Marr`s guitar

  • you could play World Party - "Ship of Fools" :)

  • Nice... Billy's finest song

  • Great piece of work. Fantastic sound. By the way, what exactly is Nashville tuning? Everyone I've asked has a different answer.

  • I think Nashville tuning is also called "Nashville Hgih Strung" and it's a guitar tuned one octave above what it should be. When I saw Dan Fogelberg a few years ago he edicated all of us one that little tidbit of knowledge!

  • Should be HIGH and EDUCATED. Sorry.

  • It's also known as the poor man's 12-string. Set up a 6-string with all of the high octave strings from a 12-string set or buy single strings from a local music store.

The first two strings (high E and B) remain unchanged, and the lower four strings (G through low E) are tuned an octave above standard tuning.

    The gauges for a medium set would be .012, .016, .010, .014, .020, .030 EBGDAE.

    A light set would be .010, .014, .009, .012, .018, .027 EBGDAE.

  • Fantastic - loved it!

  • my fav BB song - ur a fing legend

  • Wonderful Daniel - in your other posts how do you get the jamgly sound (REM particularly)? My local guitar stores are useless re: my 360/6 - thanks

  • mate what string gauges do you use for nashville tuning?

  • wow ... tone is impeccable, well played, but EXTREMELY well recorded. Wow Im still being blown away...primroseleague... got it. Big Props

  • awesome!

    you absolutely deserve 5 stars!!

  • god thats good sure you must be a studio man complete ly got it right

  • fantastic!!! i dont normally go for youtube vids with people covering guitar tracks, because they usually dissapear up their own arses & loose all the chrarcter of the origional song, but this... this is beautiful!!

  • wonderful - great job

  • BETTER THAN SEXX

  • Very nice Thankyou

  • Really, the more I listen to you, wow... really amazing... 5 stars. frigging A-mazing. I am envious, surely...shirley, lol.. GREAT job..

  • That IS awesome...

  • this is awesome

    your guitar is sweet

  • Philchelt u twat - Marr played on the album Talking with the taxman...

  • absolute class! fantastic!

  • well played

  • OK..somethings wrong here! both my comments below were in response to the post by monosound81 below.

  • Ah yes, but Johny Marr played lead guitar on this particular song released on "Talking with the taxman about poetry" . (They worked togther for the same label along with Kirsty MacColl who died in a boating accident a few years back.) (sad)So occasionally you hear Marr's guitar or Kirsty's backup vocals.

  • Amazing tone!

  • Billy bragg, guitarist of the smiths did the lead guitaring. I'm a fan :)

  • what the fuck are you talking 'bout??

  • that Rick sounds deadly. I'd love to have one but I don't have the right hands. Johnny himself told me that you have to have smaller hands to play Ricks.

  • You might want to try a Burns double six - it has a really wide fretboard (50mm - the Ric played here has a wider fretboard than every other Ric, 44mm all the others are 41mm). The Burns guitar obviously doesn't come close in terms of sound but then it's a fraction of the price! Danelectro also do a budget priced 12-string with a wide fretboard.

  • Sorry, the above comment was in response to the post by monosound81 below

  • Brilliant... Bravo. watched/listened over and over!!!!!

  • great! love it so much

  • Spot on! Well done you; great fret-work and transitions.

  • Very nice man!

  • WOW. F'n awesome. Thank you.

  • The best thing you've done man.

I'd love to see you and Mr Paul play something together, that'd be brilliant.

  • Absolutely gorgeous version of a lovely song. I'll be checking The Primrose League! Thanks very much indeed - enchanting playing (and a nice guitar too!)

All the best from sarf London

  • Johnny Marr himself would be proud! Great work!!!

  • how many richenbachers do you own?

  • johnny on lead who else

  • Amazing job.

John Maher, eat your heart out haha.

  • Nice, especially the sound of that electric guitar.

  • I'm sure allot of people ask this, but will you ever tab something like this out? I've never found Marr's lead guitar tab to this and have wanted to learn it for ages!

  • I'm pretty sure that Billy Bragg played the acoustic track on this song. I've seen him perform this song live quite a few times, albeit with his trusty Burns Steer vs. an acoustic guitar. Good job with this and "How Soon Is Now" as well!

  • oh yes, your 660/12 sounds very bvery good moreover being a beautifull fireglo piece of wood

  • Nice work, sounds complex.

  • Your 660/12 string is better than Sex! What a beautiful sound, you can't any better than a Rickenbacker.

  • Heard this a couple of days ago (daniel's version) and then downloaded the original which is not a patch on this. What a lovey tune.

  • There are two versions by Billy & Johnny, the mostly accoustic original being much better I think.

  • Really cool guitar work man.I've tried and failed for years to achieve this. The Rik, what year, where from? I play a 330 and it doesn't compare.

  • It's a 2004 660/12. It's different to the 330 but I wouldn't say either is 'better'. The main great thing about the 660 is the neck is significantly wider, making it much easier to play smoothly at the head-end of the neck.

  • Excellent! Just Beautiful, Ric-12 string...

  • That was fantastic. It sounds so glorious and soothing.. its so nice to hear the guitars up front, loud and digitized for us to bask in. Excellent stuff Daniel. Whats next, Electronic or The The Marr stuff? ;-D

  • so, you're a one-man band? aw shucks.. was hoping you'd go on tours or something

  • Wow! Thanks for taking up the challenge.

  • That, was jaw droppingly good, my friend. Encore!!!!!

  • ths is your best, daniel! one of the most wonderful songs of all time, recreated in perfect style!

  • Ibanez AEL20 with "Vintage Violin" finish. It does look very nice, with the green pearl inlay around the sound hole. It's got a built-in pickup but I don't like the sound of that, so I record it with a mike.

  • Great sound, both the acoustic and the Ric. What acoustic is that? It looks so beautiful.

  • oh i forgot; what exactly do you run the ric through?

  • This whole thing was recorded through Pro Tools running on a MacBook. For the 660 I used the bundled compression plugin and also a plugin from Nomad Factory who specialise in emulating old tube hardware. I got their cheapest one ('Rock Amp Legends') and it's pretty good, very easy to use. I have some Roland 2.1 monitors with a very powerful bass speaker, so when I turn it up loud it's very convincing!

  • Also when I was recording the acoustic the tennis was on in the background, so that may have added something.

  • wow, this is really really really really really good. NICE job! two thumbs up!! ill be getting a fireglo rickenbacker 330 six string at the end of this summer because of smiths records, and morerecently your recordings, which solidifed my thoughts on how amazing rics are.

  • When I was younger JM used to be my favourite guitarist, but as the time went by it became The Edge.

  • the complexities of marr's crafts are so comforting and accessible, it's unbelieveable.

  • Yes. It seems odd that something can be so intricate without seeming showy, but this somehow achieves it. There's an old saying, "You play so many notes because you're still looking for the right ones". In this guitar part, there are a lot of notes and yet they are all the right ones.

  • "...so comforting...accessible...all the right notes." Of all the tunes you have played, this is one is at the top of my playlist. Hearing it makes the world alright. Cheers, Daniel and Happy New Year!

  • Nice! Another classic JM guitar piece. Your 660 sounding sweet too. More!!

  • Cheers. Still lots more to do.
