i have a pontiac vibe just as a daily driver, thing works great with 320000 on the odo now, 5 spd it will go thru the gears better than most would think ! i love mine
I just bought my girlfriend an 03 toyota matrix xrs 6 speed for 4000 dollars at a used car lot. I feel like I stole it from them because it is so awesome. It dose have almost 200000 miles on it but you can hardly tell because it runs great.
Just think of this... I have a 2001 Corolla 5-speed. Never had any problems with it (regular maintainance) now has close to 180,000 kms. Reliable car, I think so. And seeing as this car is based on the corolla nearly 100% I would have to say that this would also be the case. I am thinking I am going to look at getting a 2010 / 2011 Matrix XRS. Toyota is a great product, don't let the media get to you.
@BrooklynTony1 I got this car with 91 miles on it, my odometer just rolled over 85,000 and ive never had anything go wrong with this car and it still runs the same as the day i got it, i love it, i will never get rid of it, NEVER!!!!!
@BrooklynTony1 Safe: Yes its 4-5 Star in all Categories, I've Never crashed mine though
Reliable: yes I've done 92000km in it with only basic/moderate maintence to the mechanical parts
Practical: Yes, It's a bit longer than a corolla, but holds almost twice as much
Fast: not unless you buy the XRS with a 2ZZ-GE, that makes about 180HP, while the base and XR get a 1ZZ-FE that only makes 130HP, enough to get you in the city and highway, but you need to put your foot down (hard) sometimes.
UH ? toyota matrix, celica and corolla may also come automatic, also if you want to control the rpm lift, you should buy a camcon. If you want to stay in the lift, you have to shift better or do powershift.
@philwak power shifting is when you keep your gas petal to the floor and you quickly press the clutch in for just a moment thats long enough for you to quickly slam your shifter into the next gear, all while maintaining wheel power at a high RPM. its not good for you car, causes a lot of wear and stress on the clutch and tranny... but unless you strictly race your car i wouldnt do it.
@philwak That idiot fuck wants you to hold down the gas pedal when u hit ur clutch instead of letting up off of it like normal. It's also called flat foot shifting. Its a stellar way to burn out your clutch.
ok, i have a 2004 toyota matrix xrs like this one withe the 2zz ge in it. the 2zz does not come as an auto, it was only available in the xrs, which only came as a 6spd manual. the base and xr came with the 1zz fe in either auto or 5spd manual, look it up
@nargabargle Actually, the 2zz-GE engine was offered with an automatic in the 03 model year, but the transmission couldn't handle the torque very well.
The 2ZZ-GE was also offered with an automatic in the Celica GTS from 2000-04, but the redline is 7800 RPM (in both the Celica and Matrix) instead of 8200 or 8400.
I don't know why anybody would want a 2ZZ auto though, as it would actually be slower in everyday driving than the 1ZZ.
That is a good point - the XRS isn't geared to stay above the cam switchover and the ECU won't keep the high-lift lobe engaged under hard acceleration (unlike Hondas). So... unless you chipped your ECU, how *did* you keep the revs above 6k when shifting gears?
it redlines at 8250 but the limiter doesnt kick in till 8500, so it helps if you take it in the red, plus the tires i had on at the time were pretty bald, so that might have helped keeping the rpms up, plus im pretty badass
you are wrong stupid they come with automatic too fucking moron i see that you dont know nothing about cars y algo tan estupidamente tan sencillo como eso cabronnnnn!!
Do you still have it? How is or was it in daily driving? Did you ever get into lift, or does the auto shift too early? Does the sport mode hold its gears?
I'm just curious and wanted to ask an automatic XRS owner about these things because it seems like it would actually be slower than the base model because it has the same amount of torque but at a much higher RPM, and of course the issue of the trans shifting before lift point
Yes, I still have my 03 XRS(Automatic). For daily driving, I like. I am a student, so it does the job for me.
The lift on 03 XRS starts at 6,000 RPM and goes till 7,800 RPM. 1st gear gets the lift till 7,800, but it's an automatic so it does shift it bit early. 2nd gear is the best for the lift, last a lot longer.
O/D does shift the gear from 4th to 3rd and it's kept there until you turn O/D off. We were at Squaw Valley a month ago and O/D came handy.
what is that horrible sound when you shift? Sounds crunchy. Maybe it's the audio.

@edyken77 its my short ram air intake, it made my engine super loud when i was in lift, i put in a cai and it made it sound a little deeper

it definatly is a great choice and depending on the history of the car itself can be very reliable (if the car has been properly taken care of)

@trixrs03 you must have an engine management like PFC or Hydra to lower the lift because stock...hmmm its like impossible shift in lift
oshl4 2 years ago
@trixrs03
actually the only thing that could control lift is either Hydra or PFC

This engine has only 125 lb/ft of torque, tranny can take it easy...! It's just that it has 125-130 lb/ft of torque up to 8200rpm...
