  • Where can I find it?! in Canada

  • Hi Ed. Can you please make a video of the Eastwood Hi-flyer Bass. Please?

  • 3:49 - 4:07 Excellent!

  • Oh Ed, I love your videos and your playing even more!

  • A lot of the runs I make on acoustic or electric six string guitars sound like runs on a bass--wonder if I ought to buy a bass and see how I feel about playing a bass as my primary instrument----but don't think I could write songs with bass could I?

  • @micmoable - I have no idea if you can write songs... but if you can, you can write them on a bass.

  • @BassGuitarMag I am a songwriter and definitely know how to write decent lyrics for songs---but seems like bass wouldn't be full enough for songwriting? How would you go about it with a bass?

  • @micmoable - Catchy riffs.

  • @micmoable

if your a songwriter, this question wouldn't even cross your mind.

  • @jrmwigga5555 only guitar and piano seems the songwriting types of instruments--gotta be able to sing along to it--

  • @micmoable

yes, you can. its not really too difficult.

  • has really good sounding tone---love it!

  • really blown away by the tone of the classic 4

  • how does the baby respond to chords and heavy strumming with a pick?? a little sensitive cause of the old school bridges??

  • @loudbass36 - Well, I play chords on it with a pick and it's fine. However I have it strung with very light TI flats and I don't play it hard. This bass doesn't feel like a Fender. I play it much lighter.

  • @BassGuitarMag would it damage the bass if u did strum it kinda hard... not crazy hard, bit not light ether???

  • Really like the sound at 2:40 , great playing as always.

  • Fake upright sounds amazing!

  • I noticed at the end of the Classic 4 segment you had put a foam mute in at the bridge, but didn't demo it like that in the video. How did it sound? Similar to the part where you were palm muting?

  • @TeenApe9001 - its similar.

  • @BassGuitarMag Thank you for the response, and the review. It's especially helpful since there's nowhere I could really try one of these, and $500 is a pretty big investment for me.

  • the second one reminds me of the bass rick danko used in the last waltz

  • Is that Moon Patrol at 7:00? :)

  • I have a Question Ed

If 30 inch is warmer and more comfort to play.

Why people still use 34 35 inch ?

Is 30 inch disadvantage 34 35 inch in some sort of play ???

  • @Laylax10 - Comfort is a matter of opinion. Some people like 30 inch scale, others feel it's too short. The main thing is the difference in tone. 30 inch scale has a warm, creamy tone. It's less "precise" than 34 or 35. Longer scales have a truer fundamental. It's a matter of taste and preference.

  • @BassGuitarMag Thanks

  • @BassGuitarMag `im sorry if im posting this question in the wrong spot i dont get youtube sometimes, but how does the neck feel on the eeb?it looks rather chunky to me. more p bass or jazz bass? btw ed excellent playing

  • @MuggsyStyle - The neck is more like a P bass.

  • Does it have the same amount of frets as a 34 inch?

  • thanks a lot for not slapping it :)

  • does the classic 4 sound any good for slap or is only good for finger style and picking?

  • @funkymonk816 - I have never been tempted to try slapping on this bass.

  • @BassGuitarMag If you still have it, can you try a little slap on it and see how it sounds? If not that's fine but I was just wondering because I play a lot of slap.

  • @funkymonk816 - I still have it, but I won't try. I have flatwounds on it, and it's just not going to work. I wouldn't slap on this.

  • @BassGuitarMag could you play this guitar with your dick? or are the strings too close together?

  • hey Ed, thanks for your answers but i have one more question, what is your take on the Italia hollow basses, or shold i stick to eastwood???

  • @loudbass36 - I've played a couple of Italias. They're nice basses, sound great. I don't know how they compare, somewhat similar I guess, but o course they have their own look. Eastwood makes so many different models, I think it would be hard to draw a comparison.

  • Is there any difficulty transitioning from a 34 inch to a 30 inch?

  • @Spudanator3000 - Not really. I find it easier than going from 34 to 35.

  • hmm. ive heard some complain's from some owners about the classic 4, i still want to see for myself, look like a great bass, but what hollow body bass guitar do u recomend at an affortable price???

  • @loudbass36 - Well, I've had this particular Classic 4 for several years now, no complaints. I recommend this one.

  • witch one of the two do u recomend for live presentations???

  • @loudbass36 - I personally like the Classic 4 better.

  • Ed Friedland, king of the bears.

  • Hey ed, would this bass sound good for Beatles songs?

  • @vikingchris22 - Absolutely.

  • Ed is great at demo-ing as he plays the same thing for each example.

  • Great demos =) i love how you tell everything someone has to know about any bass or effect =) could you do a demo about rickenbacker basses?

  • @bandapn - Thanks. I'd like to do a Rick, but it is unlikely they will send one out for review. They are back ordered for a long time, and everything they build is basically sold already. They don't really need the exposure.

  • @BassGuitarMag Thank you for the reply =) i know how it goes, just thought it would be a great demo and gave an advice =) if you get the chance to review one,do it =)

  • Love that Classic 4. I was wondering if you've tried the Waterstone Indra bass and how does it compare?

  • Are you demoing this with Roundwound strings or Flatwound. Sounds like Flatwound. Am I correct?

  • @colbymck - Yes, flatwounds.

  • What is the slap tone like on the classic 4?

  • @astrotrain53 - I don't know, I have never tried to slap on this bass. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there is nothing about this instrument that makes me want to do this.

  • are you gonna demo the new eastwood magnum bass?

  • The classic 4 is really really cool. Just tried one out last weekend. Looks like they need a bit of set up initially, but what a cool bass for the price

  • definetly got to get this :D

  • Thanks for all the awesome reviews, Ed. Would you recommend swapping out the wooden bridge for a Tune-o-Matic bridge? How would that effect the sound?

  • @fwunfwunfwun - Having never tried it, I can't say how it would effect the tone, but I suppose it would allow for more precise intonation adjustments.

  • @robotdrawer Thanks.

  • Is That wooden bridge strong enough to hold rock music? Like a fender bridge?

  • @Dfolkeringa - The bridge doesn't have to hold rock music, just the strings on the bass. It works fine, but I think the bass in general works best with a lighter gauge string and low tension setup.

  • @Dfolkeringa Thats a really dumb question

  • Are you playing with some sort of foam near the bridge in the beginning? What is that thing?

  • @colbymck - Yes, it's a piece of foam. It mutes the strings just a little, shortens the decay time and fattens up the tone.

  • classic 4 fretless would kill, is available?

  • @elpactodejohnson1 - I have not seen one.

  • Do you think bass with some distortion wouldbe good formetal music?

  • @gunlover19112 - Naturally.

  • @BassGuitarMag Excuse me I meant to say THIS BASS.

  • @gunlover19112 - This is a semi-hollow bass... it will probably feedback too much at metal volume.

  • @BassGuitarMag Dam...it really looks like a nice bass. Your lucky you know.

I know this is a streach but Marylin Mansons bass player (donno his name) has a bass that looks like this (a bit bigger) you wouldnt happen to know what bass it is?

  • @gunlover19112 - Not familiar with MM's bass player.

  • @gunlover19112 his name is Tim Skold and the bass he plays is a Gretsch Broadkaster G6119B bass

  • @skyebluebill thanks I will check that bass out. But is it the one that looks like this?

  • @gunlover19112 Hey! I'm pretty sure he plays a legit Gretsch bass, I'm 95% sure! He would probably stop it from feeding back by stuffing the hollow bodies with foam or something, happens alot!

hope this helps but those gretsch's are EXPENSIVE!! better off getting one of these haha they are very very similar in sound!

  • @rohanarchy HA thanks man. Ill check it out.

  • @gunlover19112 its a gretsh broadkaster :D

  • @BassGuitarMag - However, Robert Levon Been of BRMC uses a semi-hollow and cranks it up with a lot of distortion and gets an amazing sound out of it. If you're looking to get a big, kind of mean sound that might compete with your guitarists, i'd say go for it.

  • Flats on the classic 4?

  • @Mortycakes - Hell yeah!

  • @BassGuitarMag Sweet, sounds fantastic. You have a skill of making every bass you touch sounds great. Thanks Ed!

  • Hey Ed, great bass man, i realy love it and you're an amazing player. i'd like to ask you something. when are going to make a review of a epiphone viola bass? i'd love to watch a review of it made by you.

    Pedro, Brazil.

  • @PedroVictorLoL - Thanks. Most likely I will not be reviewing the Epiphone Viola. It's an older model, and in terms of getting someone to pay me to do it... probably not going to happen. But, I have played them, and I think they sound real nice. It's one of the better sounding Hofner-type axes out there, reasonably good build quality, and if you dig the look... a great axe to have.

  • @BassGuitarMag - all right man, thanks for the explanation

  • Hi Ed,

I can tell this bass isn't meant for convential slap-n-popping. In any caseI do like using slap-n-pop within different sonic textures. What is your opinion on what this bass would sound like if it were slapped? Anything close to how the vintage P-Basses sound slapped?

    Thanks!

  • country gent? i thought it was a white falcon clone? love it either way.

  • is the neck thin like a jazz bass? what strings do you have on it in this video? how about the weight? since it's hollowbody i suppose it's quite light?

  • sorry sir ed if the translator is not very accurate, the Classic 4 Bass sounds amazing, I love that you think of Jack Casady bass? you would stay with the classic 4 in front of the Jack Casady bass?, greetings from Venezuela

  • @juniormendoza80 - Yes, I think I prefer the Classic to the Casady, but they are very different basses, even though they are both semi-hollow. I like the sound of a short scale (30") hollowbody, the Casady is regular scale (34").

  • @BassGuitarMag Mr ed definitely has the classic reason 4 has no comparison, I am aware that the scale is 30, I've seen pages as samash or guitar center and eastwood mark is not within their lists, which store I order this bass?, and finally it is your view on the ephifone violabass?

  • @BassGuitarMag USA store where I buy the classic 4?

  • greetings sir ed is your opinion of the Epiphone Jack Casady Bass?, considering that Jack Casady played with a Gibson, it seems the sound of the 2 low?

  • @juniormendoza80 - the Epiphone Cassady is a nice bass. I like them very much.

  • ed good evening sir I am from Venezuela so I do not speak and write in English I am using a translator hopefully you can understand me, tell me you had to choose between the Classic 4 Bass, BSE-1 or Bass Club, which would stay with you and Why? presicion I play with a bass, not the downside of SLAP accompany me gusta mas, espero respuesta, saludos desde latin america

  • @juniormendoza80 - I kind of got lost in your question toward the end... but my favorite out of the three is definitely the Classic 4. I just love the sound of those pickups, and it looks cool and is fun to play.

  • Ed, how does the EEB-1 compare to an actual Precision bass? It's a mini humbucker and a very different design but to my ears, it comes close to P bass territory. Looks fun to play as well.

  • @gaoldias - the pickup is in roughly the same position, which is why it has a similar tone to the P Bass. The P is definitely a thicker tone though. The EEB1 has much less actual body mass, which makes a difference.

  • Hi Ed .I'm gonna take the classic 4 bass and I have a question for you. I usually play the bass with a lot of energy in live and so i'm afraid to break the bridge...is this possible?

Thank you and continue your good work

  • Well, it's not as strong as a solid body bass, the bridge is made of wood. It should hold up to a reasonable amount of hard playing.... but this bass is not really meant to be a thrasher.

  • Hi Ed, in first congrats for your work, very cool..

I need your opinion, i want buy a hollowbody bass, i'm undecided about the classic 4 and the epiphone jack casady. Wich one of them will be the best choice?

Thanks for the time and keep up the excellent work.

  • Well, they are both semi-hollow bodies, but the Jack is 34" scale and the Classic 4 is 30&1/2" scale. That makes a huge difference in the tone and playability. I like both axes, and one day I'd like to have a Jack too, but I do love my Classic 4! I enjoy playing the short scale, and really like the buttery tone. Sorry, but I won't advise one way or the other. You need to play them both.

  • Thanks Ed, belive in me the work taht your doing here is very important. I only need to ask one more thing, usually that kind of pickups does a little bit of noise, it happens in that bass?

  • The Eastwood and the Jack both have humbuckers, so they run quiet.

  • Thanks for the review. I like this bass. Are there any other NEW model semi hollowbody basses that you would recommend for that 60's garage tone (The Animals, Yardbirds etc...)? One that is great quality and won't fall apart on me in a few years.

  • The Eastwood is very well built and should last forever if you don't abuse it.

  • All of your videos are extremely helpful in getting an idea of a bass before actually playing it. It must be awesome to be able to do this sort of thing.

  • Thanks, Ed

Your opinion is very useful for your professionalism and honesty. I would like to know your opinion about the Fender Mustang.

  • It's a cool little bass. The pickup is a step down from a P bass in terms of the tone, but it works. Lots of players use the Mustang.

  • Hi, Ed

Some notable differences between the classic and the hofner contemporary?

Is foam important for the sound?

    Thanks.

  • Well, they definitely have their similarities tone-wise, but they are not the same. Pickup placement, construction, body weight and size... it makes it hard to compare. Just try to find one of each and play them, the best way to get an idea of them.

  • Man you are a legend, great reviews lots of info and sounds without being boring at anytime. love the chunky riffs in this review. 10 out of 10 :-)

  • Well thanks. I think "legend" might be pushing it, but I appreciate the sentiment.

  • hey I'm thinking about buying this bass, but I donno if it can pull of a "punk rock" tone. would it be able to?

  • Why not?

  • Can you use this for hard rock/Metal? haha

  • With the right strings, rig, and approach, you could get this thing to growl. It might not "look right", but it could be done.

  • @BassGuitarMag Haha i think it looks awesome and has an amazing tone

  • I'm thinking of that EEB-1 for a Rolling Stones tribute I play in.

I figure a Badass II, a bone nut, and maybe a Bartolini mini-humbucker would make this an ideal choice.

  • I really really really love this bass, if only they had a 5 string

  • Ed have u had a chance to play the Club bass by Eastwood? The les paul shaped semi-hollow.

  • Hi Ed. There are two packs of 32 inch scale Thomastik Jazz Flats I have seen to fit this bass. A 43,56,70,106 standard gauge set, and their 43,56,70,96 Hofner gauge set. They differ only and wildly in the E string size. Which set did you use? If you used the 106E, how did this 70 to 106 A to E difference feel and sound to you? Balanced? As notoriously light tensioned strings the 96E might be rubber band like...I love that tone your getting on that C4; but which TI flats?

  • Actually, on the C4 first I used the regular scale TIs. The fact that there is a tailpiece and floating bridge makes it work. There is a little bit of metal going around the post on some of the strings, but it holds up fine. When I changed strings, I tried some short scales and didn't like the lighter E, so I just put the long scale 106 back on.

  • that classic 4 has a nice mute tone, very cool

  • The classic 4 sound awesomely unique but... 500 US dollars for a plywood, Chinese made bass? Can't really get over that.

  • Well brother, $500 ain't what it used to be first of all. But from what I see on the market, it's a pretty good price. And, you can probably find them for less.

  • True that 500 buck won't get you far nowadays, but I was thinking of something like the Ibanez Artcore AFB200 which is almost 100 buck cheaper than the C4 (over here anyway) and probably has a higher resale value too. Decision decision...

In any case, thanks for the review, top notch as always.

  • Loving the Gretsch Look! :D

  • Hi Ed!

do you know what kind of flats were installed on that bass? they sound awesome!

    and great playing btw!

    greetings from switzerland

  • Thomastik Jazz Flats

  • Thank you for Reply!

I got my Duesenberg Starbass Today and i ordered exatly that strings last week for it!

thank you and keep the good work, ed!

  • how much money for that one

  • $500

  • wow really is it pkay for beginners

  • Ed, have you had a chance to try out a Lakland Hollowbody? I'd love to see a review of one, especially with the new Chi-Sonic pickups.

  • Yes I have. It's awesome. Not the same thing really... 34" scale and a completely hollow body give it a much different tone.

  • Hey Ed! I like your reviews very much!

You show those basses "form head to toes" and every inch of look and every tone of sound is present in your movies.

    Keep it up!

  • Hey Ed, did your demo for the Classic 4 have any noise issues? I just got one of these and it buzzes unless you touch one of the knobs or pickups. I guess that means it's not grounded right. Did your demo have any problems with buzzing?

  • Great Review Mr. Ed. I like the vibe and sound of the Classic 4. What is the scale length of the EEB?

  • 34"

  • Ed, I hope you've purchased shares in Eastwood, because this video is gonna sell a lot of Classic 4s! great stuff.

  • im amazed at the upright sound the classic 4 has!

  • Hello Ed, when will you post your review on the new sterling by musicman basses, l saw the prewiew and they sound like really good quality instruments

  • The hollow boy bass comes with flat wound strings?

  • No, I put them on because the bass begged me to switch them from the roundwounds. It NEEDS flatwounds.

  • Yeah, flats rocks!

This bass comes with a good set up?

  • I agree 100% ... I rarely use flatwounds on fretted basses but my little 30" scale AGB200 just doesn't work with R/Ws either. This unit you have sounds quite similar actually to my Ibanez ... round and bouncy on the neck pup and a nice clean tone on the bridge. These short scale basses with the semi hollow body are really a necessity IMO, if you want something different in your bass collection. Great for reggae and the old McCartney sound, that's hard to get with more modern style basses.

  • Pretty cool axe...!

  • Hey Ed ! I know that maybe you get this question a lot of times, well here we go... I wanna buy a bass that can be very versatile and im between a Fender American Standard Jazz Bass and a Musicman Stingray HH. Wich one would you say that is more versatile and best sounding to your ears.

  • Well an HH Stingray certainly offers more options than a passive Jazz bass, but they are fundamentally very different instruments. You should pick one based on the sound you want. The Ray will do a lot, the Jazz can do alot too... but it's a little more limited.

  • I have a question that maybe you could answer...

    which bass amps are better:

    Ampegs of Fenders?

    By the way: awesome review!

  • I could actually answer that. Ampeg are specialized in bass amps and its mainly what they make, i myself have a BA-115 100W and its awesome! Its really all i need for any gig or practice anywhere! Ive tried the 100W Fender amp and its not even close... Ampeg ftw!

  • ALLright I love when you SCHLAPP you have a very different technique

  • Arizona represent! I was with Metrognome Beau when we saw you at the SL last week. The Classic sounds awesome.

  • Alright! You looked familiar. Salt Lick is good huh?

  • Quite tasty indeed! Beau has a photo of the pit as his phone wallpaper... it looks majestic!

  • Well done Ed!!

  • would you recommend this bass for slapping?

  • Not the Classic 4, but certainly on the EEB1 it would work. The Classic is not really well suited to that style.

  • I assume you mean the EEB-1? It works... I prefer a thinner neck (Jazz width) for slap... but it sounds close to a P bass tone. The Classic 4? No, the neck pickup makes it tough, the wooden bridge... nah. It NEEDS flats to really get the right vibe.

  • Wow ed. You really have some sick chops man.

  • Luckily, they have shots for that now.

  • I'd like one of those man. Hey, have you ever tried out an Alembic? I'm only 14 but I'm torn between saving and working for a Status Graphite or an Alembic Rouge.

  • I've played a few Alembics over the years. Most of them were not my cup of tea. One real old one I tried was cool.... but I tend to go for Fenders, and not fancy stuff - so my opinion is a bit slanted.

  • Wow. Great tone on the EEB-1 pick playing.

  • What strings do you prefer to play on Round wound or Flat wound? and what are you playing on the first bass? Good review.

  • Well, I use lots of different strings depending on the bass and what I want to get out of it. The Classic 4 came with rounds from the factory, but I put Thomastik Jazz Flats on it. They're great for this bass, though I find them too low tension for other instruments - they work on this one though. Rounds... it depends again. I like DRs, LaBellas, D'Addario - I tell the bass what I want to hear, and the bass tells me what it needs to give it to me. Strange, I know... it's a process.
