Well, I used to think "why don't more people like punk music?" but as I've gotten to know more about people and the world, suddenly I'm glad that most people don't like the same music I do, because that would cheapen what it means in a way
Absolutely right Henry. Read any rock bio, & it may shock you to discover that even "big name" bands made next to nothing from record sales, due to the way record labels operate (i.e- the artist is always in debt to the record company). Even when The Clash had just made "the greatest album of the 80s" they were £200,000 in debt to CBS, & Joe Strummer was living in a squat with a plastic bag of possessions. Selling a track to an advert means they FINALLY get some money for all the toil.
Jimi Hendrix-Fire...Used for a fucking cell phone commercial years back, the man is dead, he doesn't even get a voice in the matter. That's the shit that pisses me off.
@MrVinushka Henry Rollins ate dog food and slept in one room with all his band mates in order to have enough money to release a record on their own; As I see it, I have no problems with them eventually getting money for their music - and the same goes for any indipendent band.
Rage against the machine is both popular and mainstream (maybe not as much as before) but they used their success as an engine to drive their message across. I dont think anyone ever considers them to be sell outs
@n4te12 They can put bread on their table any way they please, but they lose any claim to credibility once they go into the Mitsubishi ad jingle business. They aren't artists any more, but jingle writers.
@Hunterdoestube Did you even watch the fucking video you goddamn moron? He was saying it is perfectly acceptable for the bands to have their music on TV. They deserve the fucking money.
Couldn't have said it better. A sellout is simply selling out who you are and what you stand for for money rather than the loyalty of your fans. Having you music played in a movie, commercial or what ever else means more income for a band to make MORE of the music you love. Pus..where do you think it all comes from? Guitars, basses, drum sets, sticks, picks, strings, amps, mics, cds, recording costs...all require money from someone.
I LOVE Henry Rollins!!! My ex & he had a pretty big feud goin' on, from way back, until the current day... My ex told me about how he'd shot Henry with an air rifle while his band, and Black Flag were playing the same festival... So, being a big fan of Rollin's, I got my own back on my nasty, vile, evil ex-I spiked him with acid lol! Karma's a bitch, so don't fuck with one!!!
It makes little sense to protest the bands who are accepting offers for their music to feature in commercials, when they are selling commercial products in the form of CDs, DVDs, merchandise, and the list goes on. And to be fair, bands are probably inundated with offers from many different products and services to use their music in some way, and have probably turned down many for ethical reasons. Having money is nice, so why are we allowed to make money and musicians aren't?
No passive aggression, just opinions. Look, how many movies have turned your interest to some music, probably more than a few right? Whereas, like you admit, not one from the millions of ads we see in a lifetime..and even if they do, the ad context leaves a scent on the music forever.
Music gear costs time/money/sacrifice etc...but if your like me (have pretty much bought all the standard gear of a band when I want to impersonate a band on my expensive recording machine) that is a choice.
Now, post this on all metallica videos, so the little ''Metallica sold out'' jack off's can wise up. They make what THEY WANT, they aren't told what to make, if so, Lulu wouldn't have happened, they wanted to make it, so they did.
Sorry, Hank, but unless there are mitigating circumstances--the artist needs the ad money to eat or one of their children needs an operation, for instance--you're defending the indifensible. And yes, I'd rather hear some bullshit jingle in an ad--that's what supposed to be there in the first place so I can ignore it, not an iconic musical moment cheapened for a few bucks.
Yes, totally agree. I think this whole "sellout" thing is a really old-fashioned idea in the first place. It distracts people from what's really important.
@thejesman which is? Using music in any ad stains the music forever, be it rock, classical or whatever. Please prove me wrong. Give me an example of how the music was improved by its advertising exposure.
@majorkeybaree Okay...the attitude there makes me think you're just looking for someone to fight with, but I'll respond anyway. Music in an ad might help a person discover it who wouldn't hear it otherwise(I always say there's no wrong way to discover music) and the money the band makes might help them to not break up in a couple of weeks.
Look, I don't like hearing that stuff either. But it's not really important in the big picture. I"m more interested in whether the music's good or not.
@thejesman 1, can't fight over internet. 2, remember that sem-famous USA fraternity bros rape case video that had Incubus on inthe background? That might arguably be a bad way to discover them. 3, Bands, and everything else, eventually break up, and if the reason is lack of money, they are unlikely to reveal that, and probably weren't worth the time anyway.
It's still a "turd in your drink" any way you cut it.
@majorkeybaree Well, I'm not familiar with that Incubus thing, but that sounds like a very, very isolated incident. I mean, I know there's dozens of great bands that've broken up because of money issues(among other things), the Stooges being one of them.
Like I said, I don't always agree with the decision to put that music in a shoe commercial or something. But at the end of the day, I wanna hear music. If I like a band or don't like them, it's cause of the music, nothing else.
@thejesman isolated? agreed. Splitting up over money? Well some bands are best to split before they turn shit. Rock stars are dying out anyway, thank god and piracy, its costs nothing to write music and if you want to make money go play a show. If people only want to listen to musicians who are, or pretend to be, loaded, then go hip hop.
You have yet to give an example of how an ad turned you on to a band.
@majorkeybaree Lol, there you go being passive aggressive again, dude. Seriously man, we're just talking, this isn't a big thing. I don't think an ad's ever turned me onto a band, I'm just thinking hypothetically. The idea that it costs nothing to make music...I'm sorry, dude, but I can never agree with that one. God only knows how much money I've spent on music stuff, and I'm just some dude playing in his bedroom. And I STILL don't have all the gear I'd like to have.
you're wrong, Henry. Only people from Ohio would misunderstand the situation and get that angry about nothing at all, and, since people from Ohio are not technically human, your arguement is irrelevant.
I remember not being able to buy Black Flag's and loads of other bands) music unless it was through underground sources. Then it was truly "alternative".
I remember him crying like a baby about drum computers. it's alright to make money, but trying to have one foot deep in the underground and the other one in a nissan commercial is just...weak ass bore. 100%. let's face the facts, henry: you're making shitloads of money, and you deserve it, but that makes your revolutionary, critical habit a bit...tasty, doesn't it? grow old in dignity and get your ass off the worlds educational programs, there's thousands of people who have more to say nowadays.
why. Black Flag stands, sorry, stood for something. DK also did. Now you have "Too Drunk To Fuck" on a Sony Console. That's alright, but trying to make this a revolutionary action or even trying to tell people that's cool or punk rock or anything...fuck it. If they just said "I WANT THE MONEY!" would be OK with me. They deserve it. BUT TAKE IT AND SHUT UP.
He is right about the whole "making the record you are told to make" point, but then there are certain other things that I would classify as bartering one's artistic integrity for a quick paycheck. If a record label executive from epitaph said "dude, I subbed you on youtube, and we want to distro your songs" I'd ask "EXACTLY as they are?". If the answer was yes, NOT ONE LYRIC CHANGES! Fine. If Haliburton or Blackwater or some political party asked to use my stuff in an ad, no fucking way.
I totally agree with him on bands that never received their due share of commercial success, but what about bands such as Zeppelin and The Who, who can live comfortably until they die. Do we give them a pass for working for the very corporate giants that contributed to them feeling isolated enough to record music in the first place? In their defense, Zeppelin held out longer than any major band that I'm aware of.
Bands these days get fucked out of a lot of money they deserve to make. They're making some of it back by putting their music in these commercials. I understand that. The problem is that I can't listen to that song again without thinking of that stupid fucking commercial it was in. It ruins the song for me.
@amplex1337 I haven't paid for TV in a few years. That doesn't negate my point. There are still songs that were ruined before I got rid of TV. Songs in commercials ruin them. Period.
@njdss4 Then DON'T WATCH TV and urge others not to as well! Only then the songs will never be 'ruined' for anyone. Without action there is just anger. It's a simple numbers game for me, out of EVERY HOUR of tv, you are watching 16 MINUTES of commercials. 16/60=27%. Granted you don't have to sit there and watch them, you can get up and do something else, but this is TV programming that we get from birth, that enables you to only be able to focus for about 5-10 minutes at a time on ANYTHING.
@amplex1337 If you think about it, modern music is the same way. Music that you get really into for 1-7 minutes mostly, because that is the natural human attention span. But I digress, 27% of TV watchers time is wasted on commercials that I would rather NEVER see or hear. I would rather pick and choose my shows and never see commercials which is why I only download my fave shows, and will never pay for it again.
@amplex1337 I've said I don't watch TV anymore twice (now 3 times). Even when I've watched it, if the show isn't recorded on a DVR I don't bother watching it because I wouldn't be able to fast forward through the commercials. Sites like Hulu are even pushing it for me, and they don't have half the commercials TV does, so I blocked their ads with AdBlockPlus.
Most of the time it's not even up to the bands; ad agencies call up the label to ask for permission, not the bands. The bands do get paid, but as with CD sales most of the money goes to the record label.
He's 100% right, sadly I don't think a lot of these awesome bands are getting paid at all. Not to mention alot of these people screaming how their band sold out are completely clueless and swear the secret to their fav band's success is NOT selling anything. Tool said it best: "All you know about me is what I've sold you, Dumb fuck. I sold out long before you ever even heard my name."
Henry Rollins is awesome and completely right. If you are angry that you hear a song by band you like, stop listening to them, that'll stick it to them! I'm sure they'll be super pissed that some high school students to discovered them a year ago thinks they are sell-outs.
To be honest I have never switched to a product featured in the ads, however I have started to listen to bands that I heard on the ads. Bands getting paid for advertisement on tv sounds pretty good to me.
also people now can see smaller indie and underground bands appearing on apple, at&t and verizon commercials. again people label them as sellouts but it is important to keep in mind the state of the music industry. indie bands dont make a lot of money. getting a clip of their song on a corporate commercial may just mean that your favorite band can last another year
Meh, have to disagree. Once a song is on a commercial I can't hear it without seeing the fucking commercial in my head. Zeppelin's Rock n Roll will always evoke a car commercial for me now.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Henry Rollins, you are a piece of shit. You are betraying your brothers, you are betraying intellectual common sense and saying that it's acceptable to use songs in commercials is the knife in the back. You're a cunt, go suck a fucking tail pipe - please. You are removed from the artistic world... please return your badge asap.
The people usually pissed about this are just pissed because now the band they like so does everybody else. And how can you be cool if you like what everybody else likes. DUH.
I would certainly love if I heard my music in a commercial. If my band fails then maybe one day I will have a job that involves me writing music specifically for a commercial but if an advertiser approached me and asked if he could borrow my band's music for a cool ad? I'd be quite complimented!
All I know is if I love a band enough, I'll go see them any chance I get. I don't buy music online much at all, but if I like them enough, and believe in them enough, I'll see them on tour. So instead of spending $10 on itunes, I spend anywhere from $40 to $100 to see them live. I don't know what they make from concert revenues but I would hope it's a lot more than online sales.
This is about the clash between the disenfranchised idealists who imagine that their favorite indie band is making music for some altruistic and anti-capitalist agenda and the reality that these same bands have been in it for the money all along, that they pay lawyers to negotiate the most profitable touring/merchandising/sales deals, etc. and that they'd drop their crappy day job in a heartbeat if they could turn their music into money in any way possible.
What happens when the song is used posthumously? When I heard Jimi Hendrix's Freedom as a commercial for a gas guzzling SUV, all I could think was, "Jimi probably wouldn't be cool with that if he were here." What if the band is not the one getting paid but their exploiting, ass-fucking record executives?
Yes, it sucks when when you feel a connection to a band, and they become popular. I understand that it can take away form the connection a listener feels with music, but to not like or listen to something just because it's popular, or because it became accessable to the masses, is just the opposite pendulum swing from an N*Sync fan who only likes the music because it IS popular, and it IS successful. Both logical forms are equally superficial. Music should stand in a vacuum of it's own merit.
.....And besides, is it a bad thing to pay a band 5000 dollars, and a good thing when they don't get squat so as to preserve their integrity by keeping them in poverty? Think!
Henry totally spoke my mind. I heard "Blitzkrieg Bop" on some commercial one time. I was glad to hear it. I was REAL glad to hear it.....Oh, and I didn't have to buy the product, and I DIDN'T buy the product. Hearing my favorite music as a backdrop to these cheesy commercials is a good thing. Be glad your favorite bands' music is being used and relax. Is it that difficult?!?!
Rollings talks a good game, his declarations and analysis are mostly entertainement to me, but hes realy on point with this one. Bet he didnt think like this back in the day, but thats the difference between the wisdom of experience and youthfull exuberance. Young bucks is always gonna be more narrow minded, frustrated by the system and rebellious. Old farts always gonna be seeing the big pitcture and trying to talk some sense into ya'll, all the while trying to pay them bills. So it goes..

16/60=27%. Granted you don't have to sit there and watch them, you can get up and do something else, but this is TV programming that we get from birth, that enables you to only be able to focus for about 5-10 minutes at a time on ANYTHING.
amplex1337 4 months ago
@amplex1337 If you think about it, modern music is the same way. Music that you get really into for 1-7 minutes mostly, because that is the natural human attention span. But I digress, 27% of TV watchers time is wasted on commercials that I would rather NEVER see or hear. I would rather pick and choose my shows and never see commercials which is why I only download my fave shows, and will never pay for it again.
amplex1337 4 months ago

Godkingblake 4 months ago
To be honest I have never switched to a product featured in the ads, however I have started to listen to bands that I heard on the ads. Bands getting paid for advertisement on tv sounds pretty good to me.

also people now can see smaller indie and underground bands appearing on apple, at&t and verizon commercials. again people label them as sellouts but it is important to keep in mind the state of the music industry. indie bands dont make a lot of money. getting a clip of their song on a corporate commercial may just mean that your favorite band can last another year

I haven't raged this hard since I stopped watching TV... Nobody's forcing you to hear your favorite bands in that context.

I don't know what they make from concert revenues but I would hope it's a lot more than online sales.
llieske 4 months ago
It's not selling out unless the integrity of the music is jeopardized.
Generally, I tend to not care because none of the music I actually care about it used in commercials.

HileGunslinger 4 months ago
What happens when the song is used posthumously? When I heard Jimi Hendrix's Freedom as a commercial for a gas guzzling SUV, all I could think was, "Jimi probably wouldn't be cool with that if he were here." What if the band is not the one getting paid but their exploiting, ass-fucking record executives?
volpotmakmak 4 months ago

Think!
casestudyification 4 months ago
Henry totally spoke my mind. I heard "Blitzkrieg Bop" on some commercial one time. I was glad to hear it. I was REAL glad to hear it.....Oh, and I didn't have to buy the product, and I DIDN'T buy the product. Hearing my favorite music as a backdrop to these cheesy commercials is a good thing. Be glad your favorite bands' music is being used and relax. Is it that difficult?!?!
casestudyification 4 months ago 2
LOL
Rollings talks a good game, his declarations and analysis are mostly entertainement to me, but hes realy on point with this one. Bet he didnt think like this back in the day, but thats the difference between the wisdom of experience and youthfull exuberance. Young bucks is always gonna be more narrow minded, frustrated by the system and rebellious. Old farts always gonna be seeing the big pitcture and trying to talk some sense into ya'll, all the while trying to pay them bills. So it goes..
