  • mestroooooooooooooo

  • down on your knees, bassmen all over the world!!!

  • yea i'm only 16, but this is one of the best bits of music that i have ever heard.

  • 1:52 For everyone that came for the song, there you go.

  • He looks like a pirate witth that shirt!!!

  • I've been a fan since his Return to Forever days and still think he is the most amazing musician... everything he does is insane. His version of Springsteen's 'Born in the U.S.A.' as a rap song is dead on!

  • I don't see why there was so much argument over skin colour. All dark skin means is a little extra dark pigment, nothing else.

  • lol double bass man, this guys is very amazing though :), thumbs up if he should tour in Australia!

  • The major key modulation is so unexpected, and yet so well executed. Clakre, you are the best.

  • It's a physically demanding instrument that only those who play it know about. He makes it look easy, but his hands must pretty thrashed by evening's end.

  • @spoonido I play double bass, and it really does look easy...until you start playing. It's so much more difficult than you would expect. And while Clarke makes it look simple, the things he is doing are incredibly, incredibly difficult. Shifting that fast is incredibly hard, and so is pizzicatoing that fast. He's truly remarkable. (If he plays often, he'll have developed calluses on his fingers which would make it easier to play. It hurts less with calluses haha)

  • Mr. Clarke understands this instrument. We should listen.

  • Nice sleeves, Stan!

  • /watch?v=Q2y4-9kJ1vg

  • i LOCK MY SELF IN THE BATHROOM AND EAT SOAP

  • He's The Best, SimPly !!!!

  • Just heard Jazz in the Garden on Jazz FM - this has been a renewal of listening to Stanley Clarke. I first heard Stanley playing on the Album 'If only this base could talk'

It's the only album I've ever bought from just hearing one track while walking into a record store - the guy is a genius on bass! :)

  • When I was 12 years old, I found out Stanley was staying in hotel in Florida. I brought, of all things, my bass clarinet and waited. When he walked by, I played School Days. He stopped in his tracks. From there, he invited me to his room where he gave me a 3+hour bass lesson. As if that weren't enough, he then came to my first ever gig in support. 100% pure class human being. - Derek of Man Made Souls

  • @ManMadeSouls that's deep

  • bill cosby on bass

  • Beautifully filmed

  • Nice puffy shirt. Avast ye maties!

  • @ShOrtieMAC919 He is concentrating really hard, and those strings hurt, especially when you play that way/that fast, trust me strings hurt...(atleast on the double/upright/acoustic bass)

  • @TheLovelyActor Particularly when you start doing big slides and plucking the strings as hard as he does.

  • @TheLovelyActor

Believe me he is not in pain, just the oposite

  • @ShOrtieMAC919

It takes a lot of sacrifice. That's why.

  • Stanley Clarke is the best!!!

  • DADDY!!!!

  • @ about 1:45 he quotes Freedom Jazz Dance by Eddie Harris, and everyone in the crowd misses it.

Brilliant; he truly, truly is a master of his craft.

  • this is awesome, but there is a difference between an acoustic bass and a double bass like the one he is playing. An acoustic bass is just like a regular bass guitar, except of course it is acoustic like an acoustic guitar, duh.

  • sounds like sex and heaven on strings

  • i think he transports that bass inside of those sleeves

  • I like at 5.20 ish he gets really happy when starts playing something that sounds really cool.

  • Ever see Stevie Ray Vaughn get really into his solos? I swear its the same face =P

  • this probably should be titled stanley clarke plays double bass

  • AWESOME. HES THE BEST

  • the master.

(Rhodes you're a douchebag, shut up and go back to your world tour)

  • Stanley Clarke is a BASSMASTER!!!!!

I'm not talking about fishing either.

  • Hell he could be a wicked fisherman, using his end pin to impale fish

  • heh heh. Good one.

  • not only would he be a good fisherman, he would be an amazing mass murder

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA! Are you serious?

  • does anyone else think ebonics are silly in text?

  • No race is ever "silly" in any circumstance. Only individuals.

  • What a good piece of music and what jerk arguing bellow. Quite a contrast. :(

  • close minded idiot!

  • You know the worst thing about YT is you can not block an ignorant "poster" after he/she posts an ignorant comment. If I ran YT "rhodes" woulda been blocked after his first statement, cuz he is just trying 2 start crap with all other posters. Lets just enjoy the genius of Stanley here, I mean what he does here is awe-inspiring!! I know you guys know it, so lets ignore "rhodes" and hope he goes away (although I know I am not ignoring him, but it has to start somewhere).

  • im a drummer and a fender rhodes player...what the fuck is FAIL u can tell u a white boi and yes us niggah a.k.a. blacks have groove and soul.....so digg it yall can have jimi henderix dat niggah was a sell out to yall white folk...!!!!

  • I beg to differ my man...Jimi Hendrix was not a sell out to anyone. He played music because he loved to, not just because he wanted to get on "whitey's" good side. That brings me to my next point. Why is this argument even being brought up? The man in this video is an incredible bass player, and, yes, he was about to be a bass player for the Philadelphia Philharmonic before he was offered a gig playing elsewhere, which led him down the path he follows even now. Music is music, man. Never forget.

  • It is just amazing that some idiot had to pull out the race card. I am a musician and good is good. I don't give a fuck about anything else! Stanley Clark is one of my major influences. As well as, Vic Wooten, Marcus Miller, Jaco Pastorius, and people of many different ethnic backgrounds. The one thing that is amazing though, you actually spelled groove and soul right. You may have groove and soul, but my 5-year old can spell better!

  • BTW, rhodes, I am Irish, Ojibwa indian, and black. I am proud of all of my heritages. I perform music for all and don't consider race in any aspect of my life. If I am using words that are daunting to your limited mind and vocabulary, I can dumb it down a little bit. I play bass, guitar, banjo, violin, drums, mandolin, piano, flute and just about anything I want to figure out. I love music and I don't care what color their skin is. The times are very different and you should realize it!

  • Just amazing! Bass power!

  • stop fighting just watch the video lol

  • 4:04 fantastic sound! :o

  • Hwy sorry, man, I'm white, and this is the coolest bass solo I have ever heard. Stanley Clarke is truly the master.

  • fail statement. race has nothing to do with it. not all black people can play like stanley, not all white people can play like richie kotzen, not all asians can play like jerry C...you get the idea. one could also associate black people with soulja boy, white with miley cyrus and asians with (insert really annoying korean boy band here) so that comment just got wrecked.

  • so 50 cent, lil wayne will automatically have better chops than SRV and Eric claption???? and for the record i am dark skinned myself so u can't try and use any racial statements against me.

  • You are truely a fucking fool

  • nicely put!

  • oi don't be racist.

  • and what the fuck is a 'chope' anyway???

  • <3<3<3<3<3 pour toi! =)

  • ...response to UrsaMusic:

you pompous condescending ass. i cant tell from your screen name if youre an actual female or just a really bitchy male but please shut up.

  • Way cool!

  • Why does everybody give such a fucking big deal about the name of the instrument?

    Chill the fuck out

  • What you see is an upright bass, an acoustic bass is just like an acoustic guitar but rather in bass format

    That might be why.

  • @dekarthegreat he plays one mean bull fiddle :)

  • @dekarthegreat

    ole viva tu mostruo

    eres un guitarrista gitano

  • @dekarthegreat you are just jealous

  • @dekarthegreat if they really cared about the name of instruments they would try to have people stop saying tremolo instead of tremelo

  • If only I could learn to play those kind of notes. that was awesome.

  • I love this video. Stanley is more than the considerable sum of his parts.

  • I saw Christian McBride perform last week live, he's chasing Stanley, Marcus, the Victors (Wooten and Bailey), and also touring with John McLaughlin. Say what?

    Bassdog

  • Comment removed

  • and niggers like you always have to come off as ignorant.

Not all black people are niggers...just idiotic ones like you.

  • I don't need or want money so really, you don't have anything over me. Fuck you. Honestly, I doubt you have any talent, whatsoever.

  • Awe-inspiring

  • I love how these self important critics who never played an original idea in their entire lives puff themselves by picking at a guy who brought a whole new approach nd technique to the upright. Ahhhhh. And really, if Stanley's virtuosity isn't in tune enough for you- you really ought to just stick to Classical- jazz isn't about technical perfection.

  • So that's what a double-bass sounds like eh? (haven't heard a full performance before). I like it!

  • one of the best acoustic bass solo I have ever heard...despite some technical mistakes ;-) thank u

  • dude you don't have any idea where fudge you are, I'd like to see you do better.

  • Response to Steve NY:

on the acoustic, he's overrated. but, he's not a jazz player, he's a pop musician. At his time, Stanley did things with strumming and playing chords on the e-bass that nobody had ever done. Do some research before you post

  • Pop musician my ass, nothing he ever did could ever be considered pop unless you're saying that anything but classical is pop.

Stanley Clarke is still an exceptional stand up bassist, even though you're right, there are better at stand up. However, he's still a totally original and unique bassist and one of the greatest for sure.

  • Your opinion. Who's better at double bass?

    No fight - just curious.

  • Who is better than who? Do you mean my personal opinion on the best stand up bassist? I really don't know, probably Charles Mingus maybe?

  • his intonation is perfect, and the tone is probably from this video

  • yes, and that's probably why he won 1 Grammy Award, 7 Grammy Nominations, 3 Emmy Nominations, and why he was the Rolling Stones first Jazz Man of the Year,

Playboys Music Award Best Bassist 10 straight years, one of Los Angeles Magazines Top 50 Most Influential People for 2004, Bass Player Magazines 2006 Lifetime Achievement Award honoree and member of Guitar Player Magazines Gallery of Greats... and probably why george benson has him as his bass player..

  • Awesome!!!

it`s the first time that i`ve seen this style of play the double bass!! it seems like a bass guitar

  • i'd really like to see a duo on acoustic between him and Brian Bromberg :)

  • 1:12 sounds like a jesse cook song (can't remember the name) but i love this mans bass work !!!!

  • he must have unbelievebale strong fingers

  • wtf? it's a double bass!

  • damn I went to Stanley's house and he showed me this bass...so frikkin cool... he has another one about two hundred years old, I've never heard such a rich sound out of a bass

  • He was kinda turning around the harmonics of the Spanish Phases for Strings and Bass (around 5.20 for example, same bassline) .Looks like a simple training for him..he's really a talented guy

  • isnt it a chello? not a bass?

  • Definately a bass.

Much bigger than a cello, but yeah, they do look kinda the same.

    But that's an upright/acoustic/double bass.

  • how does he get that tone out of his bass? It sounds like a fretless bass guitar, not an upright bass. Is it the strings or something? Or some kind of pickup? I'm baffled.

  • It's just Stanley...

  • It sounds like a fretless bass guitar 'cos its without frets too.

  • no that's not it. It's just the way he and his bass sound. I have a fretless bass and an upright bass and they sound very different, so it's not that. Probably just a combiniation of the bass, the strings, and his style.

  • you and i can play that bass he's using and have totally different sounds. its definitely the musician applied to the instrument producing a tonal character

  • Stanley Clarke puts his feelings and emotions into his music.

  • Thanks for the intelligent critique. I'm sure we will all take note of someone who is clever enough to crush cans.

  • Thanks for that you turd.

  • why would you say something like that?

  • 5.13 to 5.39 sounds like his playing portrait of tracy

  • Gotta give it a 5 for talent alone. But, where I come from that ain't no "acoustic bass"... it's a bass fiddle.

  • accoustic bass, bass fiddle, contrabass, upright bass...

A lot of different words for the same instrument.

  • This is not acoustic bass. Contabass and bass guitar are diffrent instruments although they can play the same role in band. Acoustic bass is a bass guitar with resonating chamber.

  • I stand corrected, however most people I've discussed this with previously uses contrabass and accoustic bass interchangeably. When they talk about what you refer to as an accoustic bass they use the term accoustic bass guitar.

  • come cazzo fa a slappare un contrabbasso?!?!

  • Why not you cazzo?

  • The KING OF THE BASS!!!

  • il doit avoir une sacrée corne sur les doigts

  • I only knew him recently. I am not about double basses. Never tried one. But this man made me feel like playing one.

  • Double basses are cool.

  • i have respect for people who can play double bass let alone solo on it and make it sound amazing so hats off to him

  • Playing it really isn't that difficult (speaking from experience; I own one.)

But to be able to solo and play the higher notes as well as he does, it takes a lot of time studying the instrument, and slap n' pop technique takes a very long time to master because it's done completely differently on an upright (much more difficult).

  • Clarke is as fascinating as NHOP.... truly remarkable...

  • he played the acoustic bass at wolftrap yesterday. and it was spectacular.

  • the lick he starts playig at around 5:20, wow what a great part.

  • are you serious, this man MADE victor Wooten

  • This man is Wootens daddy...

  • Stanley Clark "unremarkable" ??

    Marcus Miller too?

I'm a big fan of Wooten but his forte is more technical as opposed to 'feel' and expression.

To say "this guy is pretty fast" shows your ignorance.. if you think playing is all about speed.

  • wooten has just as much feel and expression as miller and clarke

  • no that's not a cello, it's a double bass, accoustic bass, or upright bass. you can't slap a cello, well you could i guess but it would sound wierd. and there isn't a "massive difference" between the terms "accoustic" and "double" bass. you guys are thinking of an accoustic bass GUITAR...

  • You're so stupid and an ignorant if you don't have a solid idea of what are you talking about shut your mouth IGNORANT .

  • Lmao, so apparently musicians who browse YouTube aren't immune to trolling.

  • A cello's about 3/5 the size of an acoustic bass, also, the fretboard is laminated differently, giving it a completely different sound.

  • Gee---what do people understand by the term "Acoustic" ? Quite simply ---Of or being an instrument that does not produce or enhance sound electronically----therefore, this is Acoustic bass ! ! ! ---Yes, a double bass, and by nature (not powered), ACOUSTIC !

  • Yes, it is acoustic, but 'acoustic bass' implies to most a bass guiatr which is acoustic. Not an 'upright bass/double bass'.

So yes, it is a bass and it is acoustic. It is not really an acoustic bass by terms of general conversation and consensus.

I guess you are being a bit of a pedant.

  • this is acoustic bass.... NOT!!!!!

  • acoustic bass??? sorry... it's a DOUBLE BASS... massive difference... I'm annoyed because I was expecting him to be playing an acoustic bass...

  • I'm thinking of getting the Dean EAB Acoustic-Electric Bass. I play pretty much every style except heavy stuff. I don't need anything special. i just want to be able to busk, record, and play show with decent quality. does any body know anything about it?

  • Acoustic Bass is Great, However they can be quiet. They dont seem usually to be as loud as Acoustic Guitars unless its a Really top range Bass. You might need one of those mini amps that connect to your belt?

  • Im a blind musician and I like thees guys and what they are doing is wonderful!!

  • thats amazing. *BOWS DOWN*

  • rumba flamenco introduction

  • This is amazing!

  • Thats the way, man!

  • Man, I bet he has no fingerprints left.

  • Mythical,inspiring,completely complete,the ultimate definition of brilliant.

  • You or the best You or the best .........

  • i saw him at a return to forever concert and he did the exact same stuff. I'LL NEVER BE THE SAME!!!!

  • way way way genius ... nothing to describe it

  • People that don't play the upright/acoustic/stand-up/double bass- whatever you prefer to call it don't have an idea as to what the physical limitations are on this instrument. What Stanley's doing here is phenomenal - on par and as groundbreaking as what Victor Wooten does on the electric. Stanley helped pioneer and pave the way for what Victor does on the electric as well. What a treat to be able to see stuff like this for free...

  • Dude, acoustic bass is the unplugged equivelant of the electric bass, double bass is just double bass. Technically double bass is acoustic, but the terminology doesn't recognize it as such.

  • vic is more crazy than thes man but this is good too

  • it isnt an acoustic bass but its still amazing.
