@JGCooney The Audio for this song came from "The Sesame Street Book & Record." It was credited as two monsters performed by Jim and Frank. hope that help clear things up.
Yes, I do recall that at the end, the cookie dropped into Herry's hands, and Herry eats the cookie while Cookie Monster keeps chasing the birdie!
Also, I recall having the 8-track containing this song...and other classic SS songs as Rubber Duckie, I Love Trash, Big Bird's ABC Song (where he sang the alphabet as one entire word), etc...
I've heard this song on an LP many years ago; but looking at this clip strikes me as odd. Herry sounds different from what I'm used to, and Cookie Monster's dialogue doesn't sound like him: in other words, he uses the words "I" and "my", when he typically uses "me." I wonder if they altered that aspect of him as the seasons went on....
Was the ending cut off in this version? I seem to remember an ending where the cookie drops from the sky in front of Herry, who then eats it without telling Cookie.
Finally! I've been looking for this song forever! I had the Sesame Street Close 'n Play record player and this was one of the 45's that came with it! I miss the part at the end where Cookie Monster explains that the reason he was looking up was because a bird flew away with his cookie.
Me tooo. I remember Herry saying how good Cookie sang, and asked him why he was looking up in the sky.. then we hear the bird squeeking and cookie chased him, while the cookie dropped and Herry ate it!! I miss that fun part
Ah, yes, the upbeat tune sung by the two monsters brings back memories hard to forget! Just wondering - in this song, Herry calls Cookie 'Fuzzyface.' If this song is from 1970, Sesame Street's 1st or 2nd season, was Cookie Monster still technically 'nameless' (like he was in 'Bacon and X,' when he was just called 'Monster'?) If so, when did Cookie Monster start being named 'Cookie Monster'? @nd, 3rd season? Just wondering.
the other day I went to a grage sale, I had found a 45 of this song. What was so uniqe is that this 45 is a radio station demo sent from colombia to promote the first Album.
my mom bought me that record as part of the "Sesame Street Record Set" .... OMG ... I heard these songs over and over again. Im 37 now and still recite this and others to my 2 yr old son Nicholas. I wish I could find "5 people in my family" Thanks for the post!!!!
Anyone notice how the early Cookie was speaking proper English in this skit? "No,I lost my cookie. I dropped my cookie!" He didn't say it like "Me dropped me cookie" or anything like that! Also,he sounds like a mix of Grover and Scooby Doo! LoL
I too had a record album that had this song on it when I was a kid. (I'm 31 now) I loved this song.. Still do.. I remember thinking the 1st few times I heard this especially in the beginning when Cookie Monster's crying that it was Grover.. It was the only time I ever noted that the characters voices were shared. AWESOME post! Thanks! I can't wait to share this one with my kids.
For those of you wondering what happened: Cookie dropped his cookie ... and then some bird picked it up and flew away with it up in the sky ... Thanks for this long-lost 1970 posting!
I like to think of that version as a forceful, yet beautiful re-imagineering. ;) Awesome to have the original on YouTube (thanks), hope at some point, some kind person will post the video for The Mr. T Experience's cover.
I had this on a record too, growing up. There are various home movies of my sister and I playing or whatnot with this bad boy in the background. I never knew it was an actual skit though. It's weird to actually *see* Cookie and Harry singing. Get it? See?
Wow. Harry's nose was distracting. It was like an entity all by itself, a 3rd charachter in the skit!
I used to have I think in 1970 the Sesame Street 45 with a read alot or story book. I think there were colored records to go along with it. And I think they came in a set of them together. Does anyone remember?
I have the Original Cast LP "Sesame Street 1", CTW 22064, found in a thrift store. (Originally $3.99 at Alexander's department store, according to the original price sticker!) Cover art is a publicity photo of the full cast and set from no earlier than 1972; the album is dated 1974. "Up and Down" is credited to Jeffrey Moss.
I wonder if that's the one we had as kids. It has "I Love Trash", "Somebody Come and Play.", The Seseme Street Theme song, This up and down song and lots of others. We loved it. We played it until we wore it out.
I don't know if I ever actually saw this skit until now, it might have been a little before my time. I remember the song being on a Sesame Street record though.
This really IS old-school with Jim doing Herry's voice. I seem to remember having a 45 record of this song, but I don't remember if it was the same version of it.
I have this on my very first Sesame Street Album with the original cast. It lists the singers of the song as "Two Monsters" because they did not even have their names yet when this was made! Plus, Herry did not have his usual voice because it was Jim Henson instead of Jerry Nelson.
I don't remember seeing this on TV, but I did hear it from a record I had. It explains why Cookie Monster is looking up in the sky. A bird took his cookie and flew away with it,
Excellent, thanks for posting! I remember listening to this song on a vinyl LP at my local library, but I'd forgotten that it was the proto-Herry that was singing with Cookie Monster.
This is great - I've never seen this before!! But why did Herry refer to Cookie as Fuzzyface? Wasn't the first season version of Grover (the green Grover) called Fuzzyface? Also, I can see why Herry eventually got a purple nose... that floppy furry one looks weird.
Ooohhh Up, up and down and dowwwwwn!
oooooh up and downnnnn!
and down!
Gotta love that ending!
Cookie was insane... Gotta love 'em!

why did herry called cookie fuzzyface

At the time, Cookie Monster had no name, he was just a reoccurring character, so he was given names like Fuzzy Face, Ugly, Dumb, and Monster.

Herry: Don't you know the difference between up and down?
Cookie Monster: Oh, sure.
Herry: I don't think you do...
Cookie Monster: No?
HAHAHAHA. I love the confused way cookie monster looks at the camera when he says that "No?" line.

Cookie: Cookie
Herry: You want a cookie?
Cookie: I lost my cookie. I dropped my cookie.
Herry: But you're looking up in the sky. You mean to tell me that you lost your cookie and you're looking up in the sky for it?
Cookie: Thats right
