sea breeze's haunt my soul....and my heart takes flight...so goes the talent of a songwriter...who can take you on this journey...and Mr M is always that songwriter.
You start to realize just how deep and complicated this song is after you've heard it several times. Always makes me think of an African safari. One of the alltime best of Mancini and, therefore, one of the alltime best in music! Just love this!
I inherited the "Best of Mancini" RCA LP from my brother when I was about 6 or 7, and this tune worked its way into my head and never left. Just brilliant, haunting, evocative and whatever adjectives anyone else has used here. (plus a baritone horn solo - where else?)
If you watch the Blake Edwards movie "10," listen closely during the Mexican bar scene with Dudley Moore and Brian Dennehy, and hear the solo pianist in the background playing this tune and also "Mr Lucky."
@MrChicano1979 I finally watched "The Big Lebowski" all the way through, the other night. Got it. If possible, I want this song to be the last thing I hear, as I drift off into oblivion. It will aways remind me of when I went through the South Pacific in 1968. Bora Bora, Tahiti, etc. I have few regrets. Aloha and Peace from Kauai.
@thejoosty1 OMG I know right? I saw t he movie a few weeks ago and was enchanted by this song, it's so sexy and just gushes with laziness all smoky rooms and manhattan cocktails
@Trojii ....yes yes yes...i first new of this track from the reworking that " dimitri from paris " did in the 90's...and always wanted to know where he got the sample from..then i heard it in the background on the BL...now i know the true original....so lush but so short
kauaiphil, me too. Heard this first on that Best of Mancini album I bought in 1969. So glad to see it live on for another generation. Great song and arrangement. I remember taking note when I heard it in Sexy Beast. So certain film directors mirror our taste. Good to know.
The very much overused (almost as overused as "awesome") and quite banal term "syrupy" is almost always appended to the beautiful sound of several instruments of the viol family played in a beautiful harmonious fashion. Mr. Mancini's music is often described this way. This description is criminally off the mark as far as I'm concerned. His music is composed and performed with a special touch of beauty, love, and incredible musicianship. This gem is no exception with its most haunting beauty.
@coppatop88 Exactly. The very first record I ever bought was The Best of Henry Mancini in the early 60's. Luzon was on it. I noticed, recently, that it was used in the movie: "Sexy Beast" at the very beginning. Luzon and Moon River are my two favorites. Aloha from Kauai.
A DOUBLE JACK ON ICE, A DASH OF BRANCH, LISTEN TO MANCINI'S INSTRUMENTALS..... ADD A COUPLE OF LES BAXTER'S "EROTICA" IN THE MIX....PUT YOUR FEET UP, RELAX IN THE QUIET OF THE EVENING..
I remember waking up early to go to grammer school in dessplaines. Id lay on the couch listening to this as my dad would have this playin on the zenith wood counsole stereo as he prepares for his plumbing job downtown chicago 1967. Mom making breakfast with an old GE fan twirling in the wind summer time and in. Plymouth cream color station wagaon in the drive. Gi joes and toys all around. What a time what a sound!! Style and class from Old Chicago gone & past
@JacksSonKenny I have a very similar memory for music. You obviously associate music with graphic depictions in your memory. I'm the same way. Yes indeed! This really is an incredibly beautiful song and recording. Henry Mancini had a completely unique sound with his writing and arrangements. Excellent comment that I can very much relate to. The only difference is the places, times, and people. The music brings us right back...
Thanks for the calming post. Everyone here seems to say what I wanted to say. So, with that I will cruise on with just a simple "thank you" left behind.
This piece is so clever. I love the toccato rif overlayed with those syrupy strings. Balmy evening, pacific beach, romance and sexuality all evoked with seeming effortlessness by these notes of music. And there's a depth and a restraint to it too, which seems to hint at other things - a little danger and darkness. Beautiful. It really is genius.
every time i hear this it reminds me of a very sultry woman in her boudoir... very deep and elegantly sexy... luv it

Does anyone know who plays that fantastic sax solo? It's one of the laziest, languid and controlled solos I've ever heard.
