reminds me of the church I grew up in which was Byzantine Catholic ( a bit different from Orthodox because they integrated into the Catholic Faith about 100 years ago)
Nyt me salaisesti kuvaamme kerubeja, ja eläväksitekevälle Kolminaisuudelle pyhintä virttä veisaamme. I took catholic theology for 4 years, when it comes to the infallibility of the pope they are talking about spiritual matters having to do with the church. Basically when it comes to the church whatever the pope says goes. period. That's what I got out of the force fed catholic theo/dogma classes. @hankbellows the lyrics are: Let us, who mystically represent the Cherubim and chant the Thrice Holy Hymn to the Life-giving Trinity, put away all worldly care so that we may receive the King of all. This is chanted beforePriest brings the Holy Gifts to the Altar - it is a pre-communion hymn. When Priest enters the Holy of Holies with the gifts - Bread and Wine - the people then chant "Invisibly escorted by the Angelic Orders. Alleluia. which is the completion of the Cherubic Hymn. Eleni.
You are holding the catholic view. Most catholics view orthodox church as the other part, the eastern and exotic contepart, the sister church. While orthodox see themselves as THE complete and full true church of Christ. I view this as a great presumptuous position!
The Orthodox do not presume. They see it has historical fact, since the Orthodox Church is unbroken from antiquity, without reformations or popes who changed doctrine. It's how the Orthodox have always seen themselves since the founding of the Church before all the divisions that came in later centuries.
Secondly, I like the discussion on this page. I would like to add that it's too bad that the schism had to happen. But, that is what happens when a group breaks away from the Original Church, which is what happened almost 45 years shy of a millenium ago. Perhaps one day we will pray together as one Church as in the first 1053 years A.D.
Other than that, I would like to add I love Fr. Corapi. He's amazing and gifted, and I adore him.
I don't disagree with that; I don't know why you replied to my comment.
My point was that it would be nice to pray as one Church, as it was before the Schism (i.e., to be as one united Orthodox Church, not as Orthodox and Catholics).
As you may or may not know, there was only one Church before the Schism, which resulted in two Churches - the Eastern Church and the Western Church.
The Eastern Church is the one which I am referring to in my comments.
Ecumenisum is a BAD thing it preaches that all faiths are the right faith and we all hold a small part of it.
this is wrong! there is only onr church and that is the BODY of Christ it was split do to harrassy.

This comment has received too many negative votesshow

from the changing of dates to our bishops and priests not following cannon law.
I think that you are confusing "infallible" with "impeccable". Infallible means "incapable of being in error", impeccable means "being without sin". The previous pontiff (JPII, RIP) went to confession once a week to confess his sins. Why would an impeccable person want to do that? Please note, that infalliblity doesn't apply to everything the Pontiff says, but only to ex cathedra pronouncements.
... the Church is not about government. The Tradition of the early Church favours the synodical system, according to the Scripture: "whenever there are two or three gathered in My name, there I am in their midst." Even Peter (or Paul who was as great as an apostle) did not make decisions about the whole church on his own. He presided in the meetings of the apostles, yes. His opinion had special gravity, that's true. Nowhere is witnessed though, that he was, in any way, some kind of ruler.
Hello! I knew I shouldn't have posted such a comment on an Orthodox chant! Now I'm in trouble...
I wasn't really planing on getting into a debate about the nature of the Church, I only wanted to correct assos206 who said that we believe that the Pope is a god on earth and that his mere fiat can override divine law, which is of course not true.
I suppose the official Orthodox position is that all others who profess to be Christians are heretics and schismatics, but we all believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and that Jesus rose from the dead. That's the important part.
Yeah, it's so hard to tell in writing *how* someone's saying something... :)
Hey, that sounds the same as the Catholic position! We have more in common than you would've thought! :) We perhaps go a tiny bit further than that it's "the important part" that we agree on the basics. In fact, Boniface VIII said that: "We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff (Unam Sanctam, 1302).
baldwalrus7: I would not say that Pope is "a god on earth", but being successor to Peter does not seem to me a good enough reason to claim either infallibility (which is quite new as a dogma, as it was formally established in Vatican I) or universal supremacy. If anything, the Patriarch of Antioch is also successor of Peter and what's more, a senior successor compared to the Patriarch of Rome, as Antioch is an older See. I acknowledge the advantage of solitary authority, but...
It will not for you sin. The pope is a sin and your crusades against orthodox. You support the radical Islamic who born are church's and take the homeland away from the Serbian people
I was wondering this because I also used a variant of glagolitic writting when I was a kid to note my personal memories and painted "chronicles".I've chosen this writting because it has many phonetic simmilarities to my native language and it has a very good graphical appeareance.I first discovered the whole set of letters in a good dictionnary.I was able to learn it fast enough
I think the cursive form is very aesthetic, but much of the block form feels somewhat gratuitous and clumsy. Out of curiosity, what is your native language? Romanian?
"We, who mystically represent the Cherubim, And chant the thrice-holy hymn to the Life-giving Trinity, Let us set aside the cares of life That we may receive the King of all, Who comes invisibly escorted by the Divine Hosts."
The translation that I have is direct from Holy Transfiguration Monsatery in Boston. They have the best tranlastion from the Greek to the English. Their translation is the closest to the original Greek as you can get. Your translation more is modern English while adding more words than neccessary. They use the Elizabethan English which is more accurate in the translation. Not saying that your tranlastion is not right, but I prefer HTM's translation.
"Let us who mystically portray the Cherubim, and chant the thrice-holy hymn unto the life-creating Trinity, lay aside all earthly care, that we may receive the King of all, escorted invisibly by the angelic orders. Alleluia."
is cherubic also known as the Angel's cherubim's or cherub's? just curious. I like this chant but I dont know much about it. I was looking for some neet chants and came across this but I like to know a little about what im listening to and its meaning. if anyone could give me a little info, much apreciated, thank you.
PApacy is a wrong interpretation of Christ's tellings and actions. They have split apart, not the orthodox. Because the western empire has fallen, they tried to rebuild it throug faith. But they made a confusion betwen faith and politics..
I am a Catholic of the Latin Rite but I love all chant, and it is most beautiful within the churches of the eastern rites. This chant is most pure and reminds us of the oneness of the experience of praise between man and his God. I hope it time that the world will come to respect the right and beauty of all humanity in its forms of praise.
Im a catholic. I hate the catholic laws but it doesnt define who we christians are!:). yes the catholic church has committed many crimes against humainty over the years.
I love this chant it was peace and harmoney to my ears:)
You should distinguish the Papacy from catholicism.
I'm Protestant yet I believe I am catholic, as I declare I am of the catholic (which means universal) invisible (elect) church.
Also, you should never fret over the past actions of the Papacy, you did not commit them. It all depends on if the Papacy's doctrine is correct or not.
I think the papacy's doctrine is false according to my views. do you know of "Papal infallibility"? we do not need a representative of god but we need to worship him in our own way. I perosnally think the catholic hcurch has shaped our world more then ever but i disagree with a lot of the things they have done and do.
You are Peter and upon this rock i will build my Church and the gates of Hades shall not come against it. I give you the keys to the Kingdom, what you bound on Earth shall be bound in heaven and what you loose on Earth shall be loosed in Heaven.
What Christ refers to is not Peter the fallen individual, but his faith, if you read that scripture carefully it is Peters faith Christ refers to on which the church is founded. How could Christ's church be built upon a fallen individual, it must be placed on pure FAITH. This is what Orthodox believe and this is why we believe the Papacy is a heresy.
"How could Christ's church be built upon a fallen individual":
How can you say this? The fisrt thing Christ's church is built upon is Christ's death and ressurection, which transforms our sins in the victory of his MERCY. We are no longer defined by our sins, but by his gracious Mercy.
you have just proven my point, Christ's church is built upon his death and resurrection as God incarnate. This is what Peter professes and what Christ says his church will be founded on. Also, although God has reconciled fallen man on this earth no one is reconciled with God 100% of the time, this includes Peter, although reconciled he was still fallen until his death and resurrection in Christ.
....wait, what? I'm pretty sure that most orthodox Christians, but while they may disregard the Catholic Papacy in Rome, are you suggesting that they dismiss the entire Papacy and their own Popes as well? I find that hard to believe...
"our own popes" as you call them are called patriarchs and no i don't disregard them nor does any other Orthodox Christian, but we, including the patriarchs know that they are not infallible, as the Roman Pope professes.
They are frequently called patriarchs, but they are still popes, or rather, a pope is a patriarch, however you want to look at; it's two words for the same thing. The Orthodox patriarchs are still part of the Papacy, it is simply the case that of the 5 popes, the one in Rome doesn't get along so well with the other 4. (I think there's 5 altogether, right? I don't remember....)
shautora: The Sees are correct, but the order is wrong, it's: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem. By virtue of Canon 28 of the 4th Ecumenical Council Rome and Constantinople are deemed equal in honour. However, when just one person must represent, that would be Rome, not Constantinople, because Rome is the more ancient of the two Sees.
Thank you for expounding, I don't know the order or the Patriarchates, that was really just the order in which I thought of them :p Thanx for the info:)
yes i agree the difference between a pope and a patriarch is an argument of semantics, but my main point was just saying why the Orthodox church views the Roman Papacy as heretical.
my friend the main reason why we cant accept the pope is that he is considered as "god" on earth.if tomorrow he will say to u to do smtng it will be a sin not to follow his "order"....
@assos206 Sorry, I inadvertently hit the thumbs up button. I meant reply to your comment. In all due respect, Catholics do not believe that the Pope is as "god" on earth. A Catholic never has to obey a sinful order given by any member of the clergy, priest, bishop, cardinal or Pope. The Papacy is/has been an extremely authoritarian institution of late. Let us all pray that it comes to understand fully the benefits of a collegial ministry of authority.
@metavoia dont belive everytng you see with your own eyes (; they might lie to you. or your brain might change the picture or worst, your soul might misunderstand the energies. trust your heart :D and dun forget to cleanse your heart b4 like to cleanse everything. we loose purity when we are born and we might gain purity again when we die :DDD beautiful voice and melodies and sound and choir. good cosmos connected frequencies. bring stability and deepness and give energy
@shautora What about the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch that calls himself a Pope. What do the Orthodox envision as a Pope? (I'm a Catholic, given the times when we had schisms and even more Popes, we tend to think of the concept of a Pope as singular.)
shautora: "Pope" is the title of 2 Patriarchs in the Pentarchy: The patriarch of Rome and the Patriarch of Alexandria (who is styled "Pope and Patriarch" to avoid confusion). "Papa" means 'father'. The difference between the Patriarch of Rome (ie the Pope) and the rest 4 Ancient Patriarchs is that the Patriarchs cannot intervene in any matter outside their diocese, like any common bishop. They are no more than the presidents of the Synod of the Patriarchate.
@plyrilias : Yes, literally speaking Patriarch means either "Head of Fathers" or "Father head of family" (much like 'Pater familias' in latin). I was just explaining the use of the term as an additional name for the Patriarch of (Old) Rome and the Patriarch of Alexandria.
The Pope, on the other hand is more like a monarch in the RC church. He ranks above all other bishops and has absolute power. The Orthodox recognize the primacy of the Patriarch of Rome (ie the Pope) in the Universal Church, in the way they recognize it for the Patriarch of Constantinople who, while Rome is in schism, comes first. They do not dismiss the Papacy, they denounce Papal Supremacy.
I may be protestant but chants from the eastern orthodox church are clearly the greatest chants. There is none like it, and there never will be any greater music to grace the human vocal chords than this.
This cherubic hymn is so very beautiful!! I've always loved hearing this right before communion. It has a cleasing feel to it. Thank you for posting it =)~~Maia
I agree..God bless the orthodox faith and church all over the world...The true Christian mother Church!!! a greek orthodox guy here, living in the USA...Hope to see more and more orthodox churches in the US and all over the world
Please keep posting chants like this and for this chanter. When I heard him sing this cherubic hymn I was thrusted into the highest heavens. Such pieces are very rare in Jordan and are seldom found. They are a blessing for the people that post them and for the people that hear them also. Thank you and May our Lord Jesus bless us all. This is a brother of yours from the Greek Melkite faith.

Glorthac 3 years ago

This is what Orthodox believe and this is why we believe the Papacy is a heresy.
ideasOFdestruction 3 years ago
I agree with you. The Eastern Orthodox intepretation is the correct one.
Glorthac 3 years ago
"How could Christ's church be built upon a fallen individual":
How can you say this? The fisrt thing Christ's church is built upon is Christ's death and ressurection, which transforms our sins in the victory of his MERCY. We are no longer defined by our sins, but by his gracious Mercy.
JavSusLar 2 years ago
you have just proven my point, Christ's church is built upon his death and resurrection as God incarnate.

I find that hard to believe...
shautora 2 years ago
"our own popes" as you call them are called patriarchs and no i don't disregard them nor does any other Orthodox Christian, but we, including the patriarchs know that they are not infallible, as the Roman Pope professes.
ideasOFdestruction 2 years ago
They are frequently called patriarchs, but they are still popes, or rather, a pope is a patriarch, however you want to look at; it's two words for the same thing. The Orthodox patriarchs are still part of the Papacy, it is simply the case that of the 5 popes, the one in Rome doesn't get along so well with the other 4. (I think there's 5 altogether, right? I don't remember....)

Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria... 5
shautora 2 years ago
shautora: The Sees are correct, but the order is wrong, it's: Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Jerusalem. By virtue of Canon 28 of the 4th Ecumenical Council Rome and Constantinople are deemed equal in honour. However, when just one person must represent, that would be Rome, not Constantinople, because Rome is the more ancient of the two Sees.
Callixtinus 2 years ago
Thank you for expounding, I don't know the order or the Patriarchates, that was really just the order in which I thought of them :p Thanx for the info:)
shautora 2 years ago
yes i agree the difference between a pope and a patriarch is an argument of semantics, but my main point was just saying why the Orthodox church views the Roman Papacy as heretical.
ideasOFdestruction 2 years ago
right :)
shautora 2 years ago
my friend the main reason why we cant accept the pope is that he is considered as "god" on earth.if tomorrow he will say to u to do smtng it will be a sin not to follow his "order"....
assos206 2 years ago
@assos206 Sorry, I inadvertently hit the thumbs up button. I meant reply to your comment. In all due respect, Catholics do not believe that the Pope is as "god" on earth. A Catholic never has to obey a sinful order given by any member of the clergy, priest, bishop, cardinal or Pope. The Papacy is/has been an extremely authoritarian institution of late. Let us all pray that it comes to understand fully the benefits of a collegial ministry of authority.

@shautora What about the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch that calls himself a Pope. What do the Orthodox envision as a Pope? (I'm a Catholic, given the times when we had schisms and even more Popes, we tend to think of the concept of a Pope as singular.)
metavoia 1 year ago
shautora: "Pope" is the title of 2 Patriarchs in the Pentarchy: The patriarch of Rome and the Patriarch of Alexandria (who is styled "Pope and Patriarch" to avoid confusion).
Callixtinus 2 years ago
@Callixtinus Yes Papa means father but if you know greek pateras is also father
thats how patriarch is comes from.
plyrilias 1 year ago
@plyrilias : Yes, literally speaking Patriarch means either "Head of Fathers" or "Father head of family" (much like 'Pater familias' in latin). I was just explaining the use of the term as an additional name for the Patriarch of (Old) Rome and the Patriarch of Alexandria.
Callixtinus 1 year ago
The Pope, on the other hand is more like a monarch in the RC church. He ranks above all other bishops and has absolute power. The Orthodox recognize the primacy of the Patriarch of Rome (ie the Pope) in the Universal Church, in the way they recognize it for the Patriarch of Constantinople who, while Rome is in schism, comes first. They do not dismiss the Papacy, they denounce Papal Supremacy.
Callixtinus 2 years ago
Yes, thank you, this is the idea I was trying to make clear above.

Even St Augustine agrees that this passage refers not to Peter apostle, but to what he had professed at that occasion.

I may be protestant but chants from the eastern orthodox church are clearly the greatest chants. There is none like it, and there never will be any greater music to grace the human vocal chords than this.

Revert back to the Orthodoxy , and you will experience the beauty of God , not just the chant you hear.
