this game was so freaky back in the day - the music still is! I NEVER played this game without my older brother in the room cause it was way too nerve wracking for a little kid like me!  I pretty much just left it up to him to play :)

yeah this was a tuff game to learn without using any help. I never beat it either. what was cool about this game was that it just required brains as opposed to reflexes. and yeah the music was really incredible. My fav track is at 1:40.

@archmageflash back in the days before the internet we had to beat it without guides...lots of trial and error. This was a game that tested your patience for sure. I remember being the only kid in 4th grade that beat this game though. I had to help everybody beat it, that was a good feeling.

FYI : The first melody in this video (Shadowgate's main theme) is from Herb Alpert's song "1980" off of the album "Rise" which was released in 1979. ("Shadowgate" was not released until 1989) By the way, love this game.

I feel like I've seen this before, it's like a case of Deja Vu (Yes, I'm lame, deal with it). I've only heard of this game, but I didn't know the NES version was setup like Deja Vu. Kind of lame in a way. They could of changed it a bit more than just adding a torch to the screen. Still, I'm sure it's a fun & frustrating game. Music sounds ok, but having to listen to it over long periods of time can be irritating, but I would suggest a CD player to cure that problem.
