@daicasg, You are so right! I was born in South Saigon also and came to the US when I was 10. Used to think that Northern accent sounded funny. But of course I now know better now. Like you said, the Nothern accent has the fewest adjustments to actual words/pronunciation. And the Southern accent can at times, sound tho lo lam!

A language sounds better (like music) if it has intonation in it (rise and fall of the voice) such as English, Chinese Mandarin and North Vietnamese (with 6 distinct accents). Due to lack of intonation, Southern Vietnamese dialect sounds very boring. Plus, Southern counterparts generally speak pretty fast, making their language sound more annoying to the foreigners' ears. Personally, i think Northern Vietnamese sounds like Chinese Mandarin and Southern Vietnamese sounds like Thai or Khmer.

@daicasg: Every language will sound gibberish to foreigners. For example, I have seen a video spoken in Dutch & I assumed that it was German because I watcheda German soap opera with English subtitles.

I personally think it depends on a person. Many Americans always compliment that Spanish language is so sexy whilst it is too unendurable for my ears because the speakers speak very fast and loud at the same time. In the end, every dialect of every language is unique and beautiful in its own way.

I'm NOT discussing the semantics (study of meaning of a language) but the phonology or phonetics, a branch of linguistics dealing with systems of SOUNDS. Many people say Romance languages such as Italian and French sound like music even though they don't understand a word; and a bunch of foreigners say South Vietnamese dialect sounds like Cambodian!

But now, after living in US for 10 years, i already had the answer: Northern Vietnamese is the standard language with fewest errors in pronunciation and Americans (and other non-vietnamese speaking people) are extremely frustrated when hearing Southern accent. They told me Southern accent is very annoying with lots of cursing words

And I would like to clarify that neither Hanoian or Saigonese dialect is considered the "standard" because speakers of both accents make mistakes in the different ways. You were born in Saigon but I don't know whether you have ever heard of the accents from Central Highlands (Tây Nguyên). The accent from Da Lat should be standard because speakers made the least mistakes in pronunciation.

I was born from Central Highlands, Vietnam and my accent sounds like the combination of Northern, Central and Southern regions.

The reason is because of migration of people from the North and Central parts to my hometown. Therefore, my family consists of two different accents ( Northern and Southern). ^_^

I have no problem with Northern accent, which is a part of my bi-dialectical family, but it's sad and disappointing that no one learns the Southern ones. T_T

I was listening to the Asian foreigners speaking Viet video, and I gotta say, the American and European foreigners speak Viet way better. It seems like the further away their native language is from Vietnam, the better they are. I wonder if it's cause of the differences in the language that they are more careful?

@azuresaber There are a lot of non-Vietnamese Asians who can speak Vietnamese well. It's really common for non-Viet Asians to know how to speak Viet. Since it's not as surprising as westerners speaking Viet, they don't bother record themselves speaking Viet. And Vietnamese see Asians being abel to speak Viet as very common so they don't bother videotape those Asians. It's only the Asians who just learned Vietnamese recently or stars who come to VN for a few days that have their videos up here...

I spent a year studying the Vietnamese language in Ha Noi. I think that the Northern accent is easier to learn--the six different tones are clearly distinguishable. I find that the Southern Vietnamese people are not as articulate. They overall don't tend to enunciate--and I don't understand the Middle Viet accent at all.

Actually, the Californian accent is known by some to be closer to Standard American. The Northern Viet accent is the standard. Your comparison isn't accurate.

I am from Western Highlands, Vietnam and I speak with an accent which is undefinable by both Southerners and Northerners.
