@DianeD-I think you are actually MISinforming people. One has to eat way too much meat(as most of us do)and that guy most likely led a very inactive life. Thats how arteries get so plugged up, as well as all the chemical in any food one gets from the store. @Mos That was never my intention when I posted this, but it was only to help educate others. As long as people choose to eat animals and their by-products, this will always (guaranteed) to be the end result. We all have choices, this to me, is not one of them. I choose fruits, veggies and whole grains and have never looked back.

I have a question: what do you know about creatine and are there any scientific studies that demonstrate that this acid is essential for our development? I know we create it within our own bodies, but is that enough?
@RudyOD I admit I don't know very much about "creatine", other than our body produces what we need (like cholesterol). I'm not a believer in supplements simply because I feel our body, when we consume a healthy balance is *self regulating*.
Most doctors, that I follow, don't recommend expensive, and sometimes ineffective supplementation for vegans other than B12. Again, this is just my personal opinion.... for what it's worth.

@jacho80 It's referred to as "Hemp" and I know many people that eat Hemp seeds (supposedly best source of Omega 3) and use Hemp Oil. Hemp was once the largest agricultural crop in North America. Used for building, clothing, food, fuel and food. Once the pharmaceutical and other industries realized they couldn't profit it was soon demonized and made illegal. @BX02 I very sorry to hear about your mother. If I may comment, eliminating meat is not the single answer, it's eliminating all animal products, mainly dairy products and including eggs. Milk is liquid meat - homogenized milk is 3% fat by weight, but is truly 50% saturated fat. A little trick the diary industry used to deceive us. Why is it in South West of France where the diet contains high amounts of animal fats and red wine, they also have the highest life expectancy in the country and one of the highest life expectancies in Western Europe. You can be an unhealthy vegetarian too.
@shazzer1976 I don't know about the "highest" life expectancy, but they can be generally healthier and I feel they eat real food. They are not a junk food, fast food, soda pop nation. They also walk and cycle a lot. A lot of the NA problems are from the chemical concoctions - MSG, aspartame, fluoride, plus high fructose corn syrup is in just about everything. The French diet is rich, but in combination with portion control, whole food and exercise, they make it work!
@shazzer1976 I believe it's called The French Paradox. I reckon it's all to do with the quality of animal fats and wines they're drinking. They would probably not be drinking as much processed milk and the wine they drink would be pretty high quality. @DianeDi made some great points below about real food.
@sonianee Oh believe me, U R right on with that comment. can't just pick on the golden arches, but all fast food & animal based products. I was a meat & dairy consumer most of my life & I am so glad I left all that behind. It not only makes U fat, as it is high in fat (even lean chicken has fat) but it is the only source of cholesterol. Our body makes all we need and it is not required. I have been a Vegan for two years. I received my blood test results this past week and everything is perfect and cholesterol 130. You can get everything you need from plants without the sickness/surgeries. Chew on that!

He isn't seeing patients anymore and I actually don't even know where he lives, or if he is still here on Maui. I ran into him at the shopping center here and he was so kind to me. I am a cancer survivor and he was so caring. I wish he were still here practicing. After watching your film I am no longer going to eat animal flesh! @Joewillsetitright I think it's going a little too far to say that ALL animal products will kill. Everything in moderation. Small amounts can be very beneficial in ones diet. I do believe that we should have a plant-based diet but it's a bit extreme to cut out all animal products. Its all about quality and portion control. I agree with you about how it is best to exclude refined sugars and carbohydrates from the diet most of the time.

I compare it to say bread, white enriched flour is not very healthy, little nutrients,they dont use the whole bran, whole wheat uses all the bran, more fiber,nurtrients, very good for you. @cdn Saturated fat does contribute significantly to heart disease, arteriosclerosis and strokes. As for cholesterol, YES, it is absolutely essential and is manufactured by the liver. When blood cholesterol levels get too high, it can clog arteries and increase our risk for coronary heart disease. This is normally the case when we consume animal products. Our body is able to regulate itself but additional intake accumulates in the arteries.
@DianeDi Do you know why blood cholesterol levels get too high? It has absolutely nothing to do with eating too much cholesterol. Your body produces 80% of its cholesterol. Only 20% comes from the diet.
@DianeDi If saturated fat and cholesterol contributed to all the conditions you mentioned, my god tons of people eating their native diets would be dying of those mentioned diseases. In fact, many of their diets consist of between 60-80% fat, most of it coming from saturated fat. And their diets were very high in cholesterol and yet not only were they big, strong, athletic but they had well developed bone and facial features and no incidence of the diseases that plague us today.

Grassfed meat is the best bet as its not factory farmed etc. the western diet is killing millions because of HFCS, refined grains/flour, lack of exercise not to mention all the other preservatives/chemicals added into our food products. but saturated fats are not a killer. If it was, why are coconuts such a health food? You know thats its 93% saturated fat?
@cdn Speaking of coconuts- I agree they have been given a bad rap over the years. I recall a time where we were "informed" we must avoid coconut and palm oil at all costs. People would search out products just to avoid them, & what did we end up with- as you mentioned earlier, trans fat, butter substitutes like margarine, which is about one molecule away from becoming plastic.
Perhaps that is why there are still a few 85 and 90 yr olds around that ate dairy & meat. It was all natural then.

I really think if someone is going to eat meat, its important to eat grass fed products. Animals are alot healthier when they eat what they are supposed to eat.

We definitely need fat in our diet, it's necessary to absorb vitamins and nutrients. A little olive oil on a salad is far better than no oil or fat free. We don't need much fat, but "enough" fat. Our body stores fat, it's not a nutrient - too much can pack on weight.
@DianeDi Again thats false. Once again, you need to read up on human biology. We dont pack on weight because of fat. In fact, we arent fat because of fat consumption. We are fat because of the ridiculous amount of carbs, sugars etc that we eat that SPIKE OUR INSULIN LEVELS. Insulin stores fat. It accumulates fat. If we keep insulin in check, we dont store fat. Its really that simple. My diet is VERY HIGH in fat but i've eliminated sugars, im going low carb and ive LOST WEIGHT.
@cdnp4p Isn't the key to carbs to be "unrefined". Refined carbs and sugar are much the same as the body doesn't know how to handle "refined" products. Sugar (fructose) from whole fruit is different than sugar in fruit juice. The human body is amazing and when we eat closest to the natural form found in nature, the body responds.

@cdnp4p So in addition to no refined carbs, no sugar or avoiding as much as possible, what type of meats are you suggesting in particular? I realize NOT factory farmed and organic natural foods for each species, but what are you suggesting is good and in what quantities? In the early 1900's people were healthy but only consumed animals or their products a few times per week in small quantities. Look at the size of a slab of meat today vs. 75 years ago. We are a society of gluttons.
Eating these days is not what I call real food. I am heartbroken to see what parents are providing for their children. To me, it's a form of child abuse, albeit through ignorance and persistent marketing, targeting the busy parents and sometimes the low wage earners. Many that struggle find they can provide a filling meal at a drive through cheaper than buying quality organic vegetables and fruits. This is not right and people must get back to basic wholesome food.

@DThor53 Do remember that although our vegetables and fruits are nutrient deficient, it is from depleted soil, due to over fertilization and pesticides and no doubt may have something to do with GMO. My concern is that animals eat a diet not fit for them laced with antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, herbicides and they stand knee deep in excrement. They now add ammonia to meat for fast food burgers to kill ecoli. I will take veggies anyday.

Mercola says soy products like soy milk and tofu are bad for our health as it causes gastrointernal diseases (IIRC). I love meat, vegetables as well as soy products. I think I am going to die!

Meat and dairy are of far worse health concerns, organic or not. A plant based diet which includes anything that doesn't "defecate" is a wise choice in my opinion.

Trans fats & widely adopted practice of cooking saturated fats is responsible for this.
Through heating of saturated fats one destroys lipase (a vital enzyme for the emulsification of fat). Also, through heating such fat one disrupts the innate ability for the fats to exchange ionic resonance across the cell wall rendering transfer of molecules virtually impossible.

cooked fats/oils in general of any source ( animal/plant) are not healthy as they convert to rancid forms and trans fatty acids that the body can not even use. most products in shops now adays are only these forms of fat. even a bottle of oil most of the time has been heat treated during the process of extraction. shame that this occurs, but it is ultra cheap to do this.. :(

The Atkins Diet does help people lose weight, it has worked for many, however it is a short term, not a life long diet change. My understanding is that the people that take on this diet can promote some long term illnesses. Heart disease and clogged arteries don't happen over night, but the continuous flow of animal fat does eventually clog the arteries. If you don't eat the stuff it goes away... that's the theory behind Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. - Reversing Heart Disease.

only wine, red wine preferably works, cause it contains a compound called resveratrol which is thought to promote longer life as it enchances our body's repair system (on a genetical level). resveratrol is found in high amounts of grapes which is a reason why beer and tequila will not work. ;)

Too much saturated fat CAN cause atherosclerosis - Atkins DIED of heart disease, admitted his wife! BUT the doctor is talking old technology. Turns out there is a lot in red meat/diary which is not only good for u but necessary. B12 for one. Phosphorus for another. & milk is the best source of calcium. Long term studies have found B12 deficiencies and osteoporosis in vegans! Also omega fats r good 4 u. Take the good- leave the rest. balanced diet is best i.e. WeightWatchers!
I've been doing atkins eating plent of meat, and lost 18 lbs so far. The Inuit ate a diet of all meat for centuries. He is leaving out refined carbs. That is what is killing us. .
You will lose weight on Atkins... agreed, but it's not a life long eating style. Be careful as long term it can play havoc with your liver and of course you are eating nothing but cholesterol... that's the yellow stuff clogging up arteries.

You're absolutely right Dnnle.... it's only temporary weight loss. My understanding is if you eat nothing but animal fat, you are always feeling full and greasy.... perhaps loss of apetite in the short term. The damage can be serious if long term... I can't imagine nothing but animal products on my plate.... ugh.....Dr. Atkins must have sold his sole to big business - that's just my personal opinion. Unfortunately he's not here to discuss the issue.

@DianeD-I think you are actually MISinforming people. One has to eat way too much meat(as most of us do)and that guy most likely led a very inactive life. Thats how arteries get so plugged up, as well as all the chemical in any food one gets from the store. Also I would like to stat that even if you only eat plants; you are still commiting murder............

@Mos That was never my intention when I posted this, but it was only to help educate others. As long as people choose to eat animals and their by-products, this will always (guaranteed) to be the end result. We all have choices, this to me, is not one of them. I choose fruits, veggies and whole grains and have never looked back.

I have a question: what do you know about creatine and are there any scientific studies that demonstrate that this acid is essential for our development? I know we create it within our own bodies, but is that enough?

@RudyOD I admit I don't know very much about "creatine", other than our body produces what we need (like cholesterol). I'm not a believer in supplements simply because I feel our body, when we consume a healthy balance is *self regulating*.
Most doctors, that I follow, don't recommend expensive, and sometimes ineffective supplementation for vegans other than B12. Again, this is just my personal opinion.... for what it's worth.

@jacho80 It's referred to as "Hemp" and I know many people that eat Hemp seeds (supposedly best source of Omega 3) and use Hemp Oil. Hemp was once the largest agricultural crop in North America. Used for building, clothing, food, fuel and food. Once the pharmaceutical and other industries realized they couldn't profit it was soon demonized and made illegal. @BX02 I very sorry to hear about your mother. If I may comment, eliminating meat is not the single answer, it's eliminating all animal products, mainly dairy products and including eggs. Milk is liquid meat - homogenized milk is 3% fat by weight, but is truly 50% saturated fat. A little trick the diary industry used to deceive us. Dairy is also directly related to acne, breast and prostate cancer. My main page features a video with interesting links. Smoking is related to heart disease.

Why is it in South West of France where the diet contains high amounts of animal fats and red wine, they also have the highest life expectancy in the country and one of the highest life expectancies in Western Europe. You can be an unhealthy vegetarian too.

@shazzer1976 I don't know about the "highest" life expectancy, but they can be generally healthier and I feel they eat real food. They are not a junk food, fast food, soda pop nation. They also walk and cycle a lot. A lot of the NA problems are from the chemical concoctions - MSG, aspartame, fluoride, plus high fructose corn syrup is in just about everything. The French diet is rich, but in combination with portion control, whole food and exercise, they make it work!

@shazzer1976 I believe it's called The French Paradox. I reckon it's all to do with the quality of animal fats and wines they're drinking. They would probably not be drinking as much processed milk and the wine they drink would be pretty high quality. @DianeDi made some great points below about real food.

@sonianee Oh believe me, U R right on with that comment. can't just pick on the golden arches, but all fast food & animal based products. I was a meat & dairy consumer most of my life & I am so glad I left all that behind. It not only makes U fat, as it is high in fat (even lean chicken has fat) but it is the only source of cholesterol. Our body makes all we need and it is not required. Protein and calcium is plentiful in a plant based diet. You should check out Dr. McDougall's website.

He isn't seeing patients anymore and I actually don't even know where he lives, or if he is still here on Maui. I ran into him at the shopping center here and he was so kind to me. I am a cancer survivor and he was so caring. I wish he were still here practicing. After watching your film I am no longer going to eat animal flesh! I realized how much I love animals and they shouldn't have to go through that masacre for us! So sad!

@Joewillsetitright I think it's going a little too far to say that ALL animal products will kill. Everything in moderation. Small amounts can be very beneficial in ones diet. I do believe that we should have a plant-based diet but it's a bit extreme to cut out all animal products. Its all about quality and portion control. I agree with you about how it is best to exclude refined sugars and carbohydrates from the diet most of the time.

I compare it to say bread, white enriched flour is not very healthy, little nutrients,they dont use the whole bran, whole wheat uses all the bran, more fiber,nurtrients, very good for you. Eating meat is like eating white bread, you get little from it and cause more harm then good to you. when you eat whole wheat you get alot more.

@cdn Saturated fat does contribute significantly to heart disease, arteriosclerosis and strokes. As for cholesterol, YES, it is absolutely essential and is manufactured by the liver. When blood cholesterol levels get too high, it can clog arteries and increase our risk for coronary heart disease. This is normally the case when we consume animal products. Our body is able to regulate itself but additional intake accumulates in the arteries.

@DianeDi If saturated fat and cholesterol contributed to all the conditions you mentioned, my god tons of people eating their native diets would be dying of those mentioned diseases. In fact, many of their diets consist of between 60-80% fat, most of it coming from saturated fat. And their diets were very high in cholesterol and yet not only were they big, strong, athletic but they had well developed bone and facial features and no incidence of the diseases that plague us today.

Incidentally, look around, the Western diet is killing millions of people each year, thanks to saturated fats, animal products galore, sugar and refined grains/flour. They ate as close to nature as possible... today, it is quite the opposite.

Grassfed meat is the best bet as its not factory farmed etc. the western diet is killing millions because of HFCS, refined grains/flour, lack of exercise not to mention all the other preservatives/chemicals added into our food products. but saturated fats are not a killer. If it was, why are coconuts such a health food? You know thats its 93% saturated fat?

@cdn Speaking of coconuts- I agree they have been given a bad rap over the years. I recall a time where we were "informed" we must avoid coconut and palm oil at all costs. People would search out products just to avoid them, & what did we end up with- as you mentioned earlier, trans fat, butter substitutes like margarine, which is about one molecule away from becoming plastic.
Perhaps that is why there are still a few 85 and 90 yr olds around that ate dairy & meat. It was all natural then.

I really think if someone is going to eat meat, its important to eat grass fed products. Animals are alot healthier when they eat what they are supposed to eat.

We definitely need fat in our diet, it's necessary to absorb vitamins and nutrients. A little olive oil on a salad is far better than no oil or fat free. We don't need much fat, but "enough" fat. Our body stores fat, it's not a nutrient - too much can pack on weight.

@DianeDi Again thats false. Once again, you need to read up on human biology. We dont pack on weight because of fat. In fact, we arent fat because of fat consumption. We are fat because of the ridiculous amount of carbs, sugars etc that we eat that SPIKE OUR INSULIN LEVELS. Insulin stores fat. It accumulates fat. If we keep insulin in check, we dont store fat. Its really that simple. My diet is VERY HIGH in fat but i've eliminated sugars, im going low carb and ive LOST WEIGHT.

@cdnp4p Isn't the key to carbs to be "unrefined". Refined carbs and sugar are much the same as the body doesn't know how to handle "refined" products. Sugar (fructose) from whole fruit is different than sugar in fruit juice. The human body is amazing and when we eat closest to the natural form found in nature, the body responds.

I realize NOT factory farmed and organic natural foods for each species, but what are you suggesting is good and in what quantities? In the early 1900's people were healthy but only consumed animals or their products a few times per week in small quantities. Look at the size of a slab of meat today vs. 75 years ago. We are a society of gluttons.

Eating these days is not what I call real food. I am heartbroken to see what parents are providing for their children. To me, it's a form of child abuse, albeit through ignorance and persistent marketing, targeting the busy parents and sometimes the low wage earners. Many that struggle find they can provide a filling meal at a drive through cheaper than buying quality organic vegetables and fruits. This is not right and people must get back to basic wholesome food.

that is why when I eat meat I feel like I have energy not saying that meat is just as safe - both can be deadly - but we can worry to hell and back or fight the system and grow our own food. Gold and silver are of no value against land value. Land is tons more valuable then minerals that can't do crap for your food supply. Unless your trying to say gold is edible when it isn't. @DThor53 Do remember that although our vegetables and fruits are nutrient deficient, it is from depleted soil, due to over fertilization and pesticides and no doubt may have something to do with GMO. My concern is that animals eat a diet not fit for them laced with antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, herbicides and they stand knee deep in excrement. They now add ammonia to meat for fast food burgers to kill ecoli. I will take veggies anyday.

@fenixz My understanding is that if soy is not GMO / organic and is fermented, such as * Miso * Sweet bean sauce * Tamari * Tauchu * Tempeh
it can be very beneficial. The jury is still out on non fermented soy. I have to wonder if the National Dairy Council funded these soy studies ??? ;o)
Meat and dairy are of far worse health concerns, organic or not. A plant based diet which includes anything that doesn't "defecate" is a wise choice in my opinion.

Trans fats & widely adopted practice of cooking saturated fats is responsible for this.
Through heating of saturated fats one destroys lipase (a vital enzyme for the emulsification of fat). Also, through heating such fat one disrupts the innate ability for the fats to exchange ionic resonance across the cell wall rendering transfer of molecules virtually impossible.
This is not the consequence of consuming meat. Eat your meats & organs from wild and grass-fed sources.
Eat them raw.

cooked fats/oils in general of any source ( animal/plant) are not healthy as they convert to rancid forms and trans fatty acids that the body can not even use. most products in shops now adays are only these forms of fat. even a bottle of oil most of the time has been heat treated during the process of extraction. shame that this occurs, but it is ultra cheap to do this.. :(

Heart disease is the number one killer in America caused by eating too much meat. It might not be the solution but it's a start. Mostly the wealthy are the ones that feasted on meat. The poor throughout the world since the beginning of time usually ate grains, vegetables, and fruits.

The Atkins Diet does help people lose weight, it has worked for many, however it is a short term, not a life long diet change. My understanding is that the people that take on this diet can promote some long term illnesses. Heart disease and clogged arteries don't happen over night, but the continuous flow of animal fat does eventually clog the arteries. If you don't eat the stuff it goes away... that's the theory behind Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn Jr. - Reversing Heart Disease.

Actually you can get all the Omega 3 / 6 from walnuts... and no toxins... Most fish get their nutrients from plant based "whatever" ---- no need to kill the fish for our needs.... plenty around...

the five risk factors for heart disease acc to Stanford Med Sch CME 2006:
1. don't smoke
2. eat healthy - balanced diet omega fats vitamins etc
3. keep a healthy weight (BMI less than 30)
4. daily glass of wine
5. cardio execise 5 times a week
Acc to them, if you do the above, you have an 80 % less chance of heart disease.
If you do healthy diet, cardio and don't smoke, you have a 50 % less chance of heart disease.

my lungs aren't affected and my heart doesn't to seem to be affected nearly as much as smoking (my blood pressure is low now compared to when I used to smoke and I had high blood pressure)
at least when i dip i can still run a few miles

only wine, red wine preferably works, cause it contains a compound called resveratrol which is thought to promote longer life as it enchances our body's repair system (on a genetical level). resveratrol is found in high amounts of grapes which is a reason why beer and tequila will not work. ;)

I really like to believe that, as I practise this daily,,, red wine, my favourite addiction. The naturalpath said no... twice a week only... not everyday. I love it, it feels good, I don't eat meat, dairy or smoke... all fresh veg and fruit with grains and pastas.... Nothing from the prepack isle, yet, they say nay nay... I say yay yay... what do you think?

Too much saturated fat CAN cause atherosclerosis - Atkins DIED of heart disease, admitted his wife! BUT the doctor is talking old technology. Turns out there is a lot in red meat/diary which is not only good for u but necessary. B12 for one. Phosphorus for another. & milk is the best source of calcium. Long term studies have found B12 deficiencies and osteoporosis in vegans! Also omega fats r good 4 u. Take the good- leave the rest. balanced diet is best i.e. WeightWatchers!

You will lose weight on Atkins... agreed, but it's not a life long eating style. Be careful as long term it can play havoc with your liver and of course you are eating nothing but cholesterol... that's the yellow stuff clogging up arteries.

You're absolutely right Dnnle.... it's only temporary weight loss. My understanding is if you eat nothing but animal fat, you are always feeling full and greasy.... perhaps loss of apetite in the short term. The damage can be serious if long term... I can't imagine nothing but animal products on my plate.... ugh.....Dr. Atkins must have sold his sole to big business - that's just my personal opinion. Unfortunately he's not here to discuss the issue.
