I agree that negative reinforcement in general is necessary, but i still don't like it. In an ideal situation, people would want to do all the right things. With the enviroment, I think positive incentives will ultimately be the most effective.
It reinforces the overal message and gives further incentive. Yes it shouldn't depend on that, but at the same time, if your parent told you not to do something, it's often the fear of the consequences that makes you stick to it. In the same way if you do something good, you'd look to them to be pleased, you'd look for recognition or apprectiation.
And you should want to do that anyway, the general attitude behind it is to encourage being good to the environment. But yes there are sayings which talk about reward for planting trees and people or animals benefitting from them, or punishment for unjustly cutting them down.

I've had responses from really nice atheists who agree about this trend on YouTube of the popular atheists always being offensive and on the attack.
