@z06k I believe the person training with him was an 8th dan (hachidan) - so I was told. I am not sure though. If anyone knows please feel free to correct me.
The maximum dan for nearly all martial arts is 8th Dan, however if the suitable training period is correct 9th Dan is awarded posthumously. I'm personally about to grade for my 1st Dan in Shotokan karate with ESKA, a training group based in the UK around East Anglia, can't wait to be able to say I'm a black belt =)
@crcardillo In kendo, 8th dan is the highest grade attainable by grading. 9th dan is now an honorary grade awarded to leaders of their generation, and people with this rank are considered "national treasures" in Japan. 10th dan is considered un-obtainable without actual live combat experience / contributing to the theory of kendo, which is of course out of the question today!
@TicTacToe0124 those who practice kendo (or martial arts originated in Japan - generally) a dan is a rank that is achieved through years of practice. Below "dan" ranks are the Kyus but If you are a 1st dan (or Shodan) it means you are at a somewhat beginner's level in the ranks. 10th dan was the top level, it is now oblivious and people can only go up to 8th dan (and I believe 9th honorary, not sure though). To become an 8th dan you need at least 32 years of practice. Cheers
@Kaoru777 are you into aikido? looking at aiki juts especially like the idea of learning how to fight with a sword. they say "not applicable" but i dont know if i had a katana hanging in my house and knew how to use it, id feel much safer.
@hudders128 I actually have always thought that aikido was the most clever martial art out of all of them - and this is not me teasing people or trying to start a war. The reason why is very simple: physics. Being able to use the opponent's energy against them is the coolest trick in the book. They attack you, they lose by their own hand. However, and please correct me if I am mistaken, in aikido there are also sword kata? And no sword can be wielded against a gun so I understand you
although, feeling safe is a state of mind I compare to confidence a lot. You have to believe in yourself and your abilities in order to be able to feel safe too - and this is my humble opinion. But like I said before, when faced with certain situations I think there isn't a sword in the world that could keep us safe lol.
@LovesToSpooge77 :) we make our choices and we stick by them :) only a few have the skill for close combat or bare hand arts and others have a skill for weapons or long range. I am just glad that we all share the passion for martial arts, whichever they might be.
true, but there are still some good willed people out there. And it is amazing to walk around in the Imperial Palace and hear our "modern times samurai" practicing the noble art. The times change but the spirt lives on forever
@BlackTigerAP Thought times have changed, There is people out there still that dedicate their whole lives to studying these great martial arts. It's just harder now for people to dedicate them selves to things that actually matter. Most people prefer to stay at home and watch tv, play on the computer or waste their life in some other unnatural way. This is especially true for a very high percentage of Americans. The rise of computers and technology was the fall of everything else.
Not anymore, now dans only go up to 8th and I am still not sure if they still grant the honorary 9th. 9th dan was also removed from the "ranks" not too long ago, there are still some living 9th dan kendoka. Cheers

@mrmblackjack It's they guy in black you should be paying attention to. The guy in white may be moving around more but the guy in black is the one who is displaying superior skill.
Wow that was amazing. From my experience, one practice session with this man will break your bones. You'll only understand this if you actually train and also this man was remarkable. If I was in the middle of a Zombapocalypse I would stick with this guy. Oh and obviously Chuck Norris

It's rare that people of this caliber allow themselves to be on video.
They're both amazing, and I have a question. Who is the guy in white? He has incredible energy and technique. Does anyone know who he is and what grade he had when this video was recorded?
8th dan is the highest degree, you can achieve by examination. 9th and 10th dan are honourary degrees which can be bestowed upon you (by some comitee or other), but which one cannot actively/directly pursue.
Watch the guy in black towards the end. He's 70 years old, and he parried every attack thrown at him. He even counterattacks and throws the other guy off balance.
@mrmblackjack Look very closely and you'll see that the guy in black deflects and blocks all of his attacks, and he gets completely owned from about 0:55 onwards.
kendo is nice as a sport but itsn not really usable on street cuz i dont thinkl that anybody carrys a wooden sword with him ;D...but i like kendo very much it has a very nice style so as sport its very interesting
This words really changed my life, i was almost leaving kendo when a saw this documentary for the first time and this words made me keep going, and now i want more then never practice kendo for the rest of my life
I dont have much experience with kendo (been at it for a year now) so i wonder if the tsukis at 1:00 were a bit extraordinary? When i first saw the documentary, the white guy's tsuki seemed pretty fierce, and then it struck me how good moriji returns it just a moment later. But now they don't seem so fast.
@nyczthug5 I wouldn't expect anything less from a 10th dan. His experience makes up for lack of mobility, like veteran athletes in modern sports competing with the more athletic rookies and younger guys.
@alexnickolaev heheh no, at least not any longer, maybe a few centuries ago when there was no dan "system" and only the strongest one prevailed, then I believe that could have happened. Thankfully (and you know it too) it is not the case in present times.
@zoodle85 The truth is that In most martial arts there are Tittles that haven't been presented for a couple of years just because they are so demanding and now days even our grand masters are loosing some hope in the arts which is making it impossible for some to reach the top nobility these days. =3
Morichi Mochida was the last 10 dan kendoka and thats not because they changed it it has always been the same. The tehnical maximum u can achieve is the 8th dan, but u can go upper if u do or achieve or show the world u deserve truly more than 8th dan. Current highest dan is 9th dan there is also a video on youtube... So even today u can achieve 10 dan but u have to be at least the level the great sensei Morichi was and did. 10 dan still exist!
@zoodle85 Yeah dude thats why its so special, because swordmanship is a very high ranking art in Japan. The exam is harder than the law bar exam in the country. On the other hand the modern world hasn't produce a 10th dan in over 40 some years. Most only reach the 8th dan level now and he was the last to ever reach the 10th dan. He may be the last one unitl the last Hour of the Earth.
i'm with n0tcreat. this man is what it's all about. not just martial arts....life. pursuit of true potential which is not limited by age, body, or even intelligence (IQ, as we refer to it). practice of the FULL being that we ALL have. he is what i admire most, whatever the practice be it martial arts or playing the blues. makes no difference to me. reminds me that only life pursuits are true ones and vice versa and ANY one can do them. and honor, honor, honor...
All these Grand Masters scare me infinitely. If those were real swords, that person would have just been killed by a 70 yearold man who only moved 2 steps.

When i first saw the documentary, the white guy's tsuki seemed pretty fierce, and then it struck me how good moriji returns it just a moment later. But now they don't seem so fast.

people refuse 9th dan cos they know its a very unrealistic martial art to learn and that yoga or sleeping wud do more harm to opponant
WolfishNuckajuh 2 years ago
I couldn't see him give up a single damn point.... This is true mastery. And UFC guys have the gal to call themselves "master" martial artists.

Wtf?? holy shit he was 76 years old and was still able to block all those lightning attacks??
nyczthug5 2 years ago 127
@nyczthug5 I wouldn't expect anything less from a 10th dan. His experience makes up for lack of mobility, like veteran athletes in modern sports competing with the more athletic rookies and younger guys.

@nyczthug5 because he -was- lightning.

Title should say 8th Dan. Kendo only goes to the Hachidan.
zoodle85 2 years ago
Because it used to go up to 10th...and that man was the last one.
Kaoru777 2 years ago 83
What was the reason they discontinued the 9th and 10th?
danshyu 2 years ago
@Kaoru777 why did they stop awarding 10 dans????
joeladobes 2 years ago
When did it change and why?
Omikron1112 1 year ago
@Kaoru777 If I not mistaken, you should kill an enemy with your sword in the real fight to go higher than 8 dan. Is it true?
alexnickolaev 6 months ago
@alexnickolaev lol hell no.What mentaly retarded person told you that?
TheTommyKay 4 months ago
@alexnickolaev heheh no, at least not any longer, maybe a few centuries ago when there was no dan "system" and only the strongest one prevailed, then I believe that could have happened. Thankfully (and you know it too) it is not the case in present times.
Cheers

it is a different story when you are a grandmaster(as i know)
dogus98 2 years ago
@zoodle85 The truth is that In most martial arts there are Tittles that haven't been presented for a couple of years just because they are so demanding and now days even our grand masters are loosing some hope in the arts which is making it impossible for some to reach the top nobility these days. =3
That's what i think is happening
Nlrvana99 2 years ago
@zoodle85 hahah ignorance.
macoelmeco 2 years ago
@zoodle85 I believe 8th Dan is that last Dan you could test for. The last 2 Dan are award based on your contribution and martial art life.
seravi 1 year ago
@zoodle85
Dont know if u know or not already but.
10 dan still exist!
serafar 1 year ago
@zoodle85 Yeah dude thats why its so special, because swordmanship is a very high ranking art in Japan. The exam is harder than the law bar exam in the country. On the other hand the modern world hasn't produce a 10th dan in over 40 some years. Most only reach the 8th dan level now and he was the last to ever reach the 10th dan. He may be the last one unitl the last Hour of the Earth.
PhuQuangLe111 1 year ago
@zoodle85 no...kendo goes up to 10th dan.....
its just no one is able to achieve over hachi dan, thats why they say hachi dan is the highest,
but it goes to 10th dan.

i'm with n0tcreat. this man is what it's all about. not just martial arts....life. pursuit of true potential which is not limited by age, body, or even intelligence (IQ, as we refer to it). practice of the FULL being that we ALL have. he is what i admire most, whatever the practice be it martial arts or playing the blues. makes no difference to me. reminds me that only life pursuits are true ones and vice versa and ANY one can do them. and honor, honor, honor...

All these Grand Masters scare me infinitely. If those were real swords, that person would have just been killed by a 70 yearold man who only moved 2 steps.
