That's the real reason why the mob "gets caught nowadays, rats. If you don't have rats, then there's no possible way of linking the suspect I.e in this case Paulie to the crime. But once you've got rats giving info on guys who do certain ways of earning the FBI can then narrow down the list of possible suspects, and then start linking people to the crimes, that's how they make charges stick. Not like the old days.

They could have left as much finger prints as they wanted, but the police don't automatically have a database with everyones finger prints on it, they only takes your prints if you're a suspect, and who would suspect them? The case would get shelved, and only if a rat gave info on Paulie hitting the joint would he then become a suspect.
