This is a simplified, easily (relatively) quantifiable test run to figure out the methods by which you would solve for HUGE problems involving reduction of variables. ie- find 'families' of answers, find 'unavoidable' combinations, etc.

Just a nitpick. You said that Sudoku comes from Japan. That's actually not true. It was invented in America, and first published by Dell Magazines in 1979 under the name Number Place. Now, in Number Place, puzzles always started with 4 clues in each row, column, and box; it wasn't until Japan's reinvention of the puzzle as Sudoku that the arrangement of clues became more arbitrary.
