Iron Maiden no doubt began power metal. They and Judas Priest alone. The galloping style would not exist. Modern day Power metal bands Did take the gallop from mid-era Maiden. No they did not take it from Dianno era Maiden, but clearly Dickinson and Halford are Power metal Voices. It is the reason so many imitate that style. For you to say they are not Originators of power metal regardless of being NWOBHM then you obviously have no idea about metal or what you are talking about.

Well said. :) IMO, you can't call a band power metal because of the vocal. To me the heart of power metal is in the drums and the guitar. I would say the voice plays a little role there aswell, but it wouldn't have been power metal with the voice alone. So I would put Iron Maiden as classic heavy metal I think. Or a mix of something at least.

@jbowling74 Neither one of the following bands you mention are Power Metal Bands + Freedom Call, them self, call them self a Heavy Metal Band and then again the genre Power Metal did not exist when both Iron Maiden and Judas Priest did their breakthrough. Checking the Top Metal Bands of the World from the late 70 to early 80's its all Heavy Metal according to the band members themself aswell.

@MrAndyman290 - Maybe I should have been more specific, but yes they began what is now modern power metal sound. Galloping riffs, melodic solos, and catchy choruses. Judas Priest amped it up a bit and added Higher pitch falsetto- oriented vocals; so yes clearly these two bands (alone), Maybe Queen to some degree are the primary influenced factors for the European power metal sound. There is simply no disputing this, for you to not see that is mind boggling??? Even the bands themselves admit it?

Chris Bay has openly admitted that Kai Hansen is a big influence on his musical style, and you can hear it on his vocals and guitarplaying.

The fact that Chris also plays music in the style of Power Metal, which most people credit (rightly so or not) to be Kai Hansens style of music only serve to reinforce the point.

And a final point, Dan Zimmerman, long time Gamma Ray drummer, was also the drummer for Freedom call on earlier albums. Chris is defenitely influenced by Kai.
