  • Sarasate himself wrote at the top of the score that it was written to model Gypsy improvisation and that there is no set way to play this piece. It's up to the player.

  • If you were really in a coma, well boo-hoo, I'm sure none of the animals you almost certainly eat were persecuted fully conscious. Anyway, u obviously recovered, though not well enough, it seems, 2 grasp the point I was trying 2 make: simply that the phrase "lifespan" shouldn't be used to indicate how long a particular person, or pet for that matter, happened to live. At no point in my wake-up t2 you, did I suggest that I was under the impression that this schmalz was written 200 years ago.

  • Truly remarkable - a good composer writes music with allowance for sheer brilliance, Sarah Chang is an inimitable Virtuoso of unmatched proportions - Bravo!!!!

  • I Like her also Vanessa Mae..... ;)

  • Sarah Chang is a brilliant violinist. She has an amazing technique. Beaucoup d'émotion, de finesse dans son jeu. Présence sur scène incroyable. Elle a tout mon respect!

  • Is she playing a Garabaldi or is it a Pagliachi? Whatever its fantastic, but according to Sarah (on twitter) she's a lousy driver.

  • How come it has been so long we don't have another piece of violin music like this one?

  • Anyone know which violin she is using in this particular piece?

  • So good to be able to listen to "gypsylike" music in this place which was build in 1936 Nazi Berlin. Thank you Amerika, thank you Russia and thank you Sarah Chang we owe you big time! :D

    Awesome piece!

  • I wonder why the Carmen Fantasy videos of Sarah Chang playing with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Placido Domingo, have been removed from YouTube. They were my favorite to watch. She's so lively and vivacious. Today our local radio station played Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy but with another violinist, a male, and it just sounded so tame that I called and asked if they could play the Sarah Chang rendition!.

  • incredible, so jung, so hübsch und solch ein unwahrscheinlich großes Gefühl, kann das Zufall sein? Ein weiterer Beweis für die Kunst des Übernatürlichen!!!

  • there will always be people who hate this and people who love it and people who are just in between. Dont say she sucks or w.e. because that is just YOUR opinion. after all, she's famous for a reason. You don't have to like it, but don't disrespect the performer. lets just enjoy the music. everyone has their own interpretation of a song, this is just hers. stop bringing so much hate into music.

  • How can you possibly criticize her? This piece was specifically written to be played in an improvisitory style to best imitate the gypsy violin playing. The way Sarasate played it does not set a standard for how it should always be played. There are some things she did in this performance that I didn't do when I performed it, but that doesn't make her playing any less amazing.

  • wonderful interpretation!

  • I was on this concert...It was amazing...AMAZING!

    i love Sarah Chang...5 stars *****

  • Awesome !

  • ok...shes flashy...but who cares? still i prefer how pablo played it himself...much more honestly, very elegant and modest...and his sound is insane...so smooth...! look it up...its on utube

  • if all of you critics think that her playing lacks in this piece, i'd like to see you do better. she's one of the most talented violinists of this century and i bet that none of you can even come close to the standard she plays at. so just sit back and enjoy the piece.

  • I think she plays i wonderfully and i love her dress

  • have you think about, that the sound quality is not the best in this video, and on youtube in general

  • Comment removed

  • Because she was born in America you fool.

  • shes very good but i perlman is better

  • I think Anne sophie mutter is good at Mozart not sarasate.

Sarah chang is the BEST in Gipsy airs.

  • absolutely magnificent

  • So beautiful and so emotional...Thanks Sarah, and thanks por posting this :)

  • la peggiore, SENZA ANIMA, UNA AUTOMATA CHE SUONA E BASTA! FREDDA UNA MACCHINA! E POI PLACIDO CON LA C POR FAVOR!

  • Love the Beginning <3

  • lol coming from a prouid koren guy

  • Sarah Chang is so expressive. That's what makes her so good.

  • that could have been funny if that was jackie's last name you idiot

  • """Wow!

    amazing!

    INCREDIBLE!"""

  • what a bamf

whats the name of this piece

  • zigeunerweisen (gypsy airs)

its says it at the beginning

  • Joo Young Oh's interpretation is better...

  • Outstanding performance!

  • Wow, great performance! Does anyone know what orchestra accompanied her in this performance?

  • nevermind. it says berlin philharmonic. wow.

  • everytime i watch this, i'm inspired to practice more! :)

  • 와우~~!!! 완벽한 해석력이로군요.^^

  • gods be damned, I cant even flail my fingers that fast. The dexterity involved makes my head spin. She must type a million words a second!

  • VERY NICE!!!

  • Wonderful .. She's the best!

  • such passion. I love how Sarah Chang plays the violin. Absolutely captivating

  • che classe!

  • It is a delight to hear this piece from a purely violinist playing perspective.

Sarah plays the violin effortlessly, like it was an extension of herself. I know she was a prodigy but that doesn't change things. Her playing is easy listening due to her nice tone, bowing nuances, and her timing is right, like a true master.

As to her musicianship, not to seem presumptuous but I it was too pretty and proper and lacked the gypsy tears, fire and soul.

  • we are talking about a piece of music that was written some 200 years ago. nobody who's alive has heard or knows how the original composer wanted this particular piece to be played or can claim to know precisely what's this so called "classical qualities" you've mentioned. saying that you personally don't find her playing appealing or moving would've sufficed here, instead of trying to sound like an ostentatious pedagogue in a vain attempt to aggrandize and rationalize your own personal taste.

  • @bluemonolith88

There is actually a recording of Sarasate playing this on Youtube. It's probably so distorted that you can't really hear his emotions, but almost nobody plays it like him...in fact, I can't think of one person that plays this exactly the way he does. However, this I agree with you in saying that there is not one way to play this "correctly".

  • @bluemonolith88 FALSE. This piece of music was written in 1878. Sarasate's lifespan is 1844-1908. As a matter of fact, I believe this is THE original Zigeunerweisen rendition played by Sarasate himself in 1904. He made it sound so effortless:

    watch?v=ABm7nMVyNh4

  • @zucchini2007 yeah, i know. somebody already responded to me about it. but the point i was trying to make was that for much of classical music, there is no existing original rendition or "the correct version." and it's true that pretty much no well-known violinist we know plays zaigeunerweisen like the original sarasate's version.

  • @zucchini2007

Just to give you a little stylistic wake-up, blue, the better choice of words would have

been "Sarasate lived from 1844 to l908. " To say that Sarasate's lifespan is 1844-

1908 is to suggest that according to group estimates, Sarasate should live until

l908, if all goes well. Not to alarm you, if you happening to be emerging from a very

long coma, but we're well on the way to 2012!

  • @tonywsmith2 First of all, how distasteful to joke about me being in a coma. Seriously? Second of all, it was NOT written 200 years ago!

  • @bluemonolith88 The last sentence: "fragment (no suggestions)"

  • @agentmm1 it's stupid try to critique somebody's writing on youtube, and the last sentence is a long sentence, not a fragment. learn the difference.

  • You're just as stupid as your screen name!

  • so are you

  • Hahaha! Yes at 4:16 ;D

  • She is soooooo amazing! I love that she looks so happy! :D

  • fking amazing!!! she's absolutely awesome!!! on a par with Vengerov, anyday!!!!

    love u, sarah!!!

    :D xxx

  • She ruins Vengerov. Listen to her from 5:00 to 6:45. Vengerov is a pretentious twit; Chang is the genuine article.

  • Amazing! Like her body language expression and smiling

although they are not really matching the sad part . sarah is a genius so we should be tolerant to minor discrepancies of common taste.

  • i love how a lot of people accept errors in the difficult parts during performances (i.e. harmonics) just because its the nature of the piece. its more about musicianship than technicality (although it certainly helps)

  • She is an excellent violinist and performer; I enjoy listening to her. One of the things I like about her is that she LOVES the violin-she smiles when she knows she has nailed something or enjoys part of the music, so as a fellow violinist I understand that & feel her joy. Violinists are individuals and I don't want or expect the same thing out of their performances, I enjoy all the little different nuances and flavors. If you want perfection listen to a computer program

  • ..I also have to agree with you 6350246, the visual antics are very offputting. Chang has played this piece a bijillion times and knows it as well as we know how to open a door...she is going through the motions here and her body language and the faces seem so full of pretense. She seems more into herself while playing than she is into the piece..kind of 'displaying' herself as a showpiece rather than having the music be the center of attention. It's no wonder why the performance is mediocre.

  • Oh for goodness sake....so she missed as plucked note. She's not a bloody robot! If you prefer another player then by all means say so but your musical judgement is poor if it is based on pedantic little mistakes. This is music, not chartered accountancy. Sheesh!

  • Chang is an excellent player but the violinist who outplays her in not only emotional content, bowing technique, phrasing and composure as well is another Korean violinist, Chee Yun. I have seen them both live more than a few times in the last 15 years and Chee Yun is above category, possibly the greatest violinist (or in the top three at least) of the last 50 years...and no, I'm not exaggerating.

  • What amazes me about her is how incredibly well she gets around the fiddle with such small hands! She has no problem with tenths at all. I honsestly dont know how she does it. Perlman has such large hands he can play in the upper register without shifting postions. Chang - amazing!

  • I lOVE HER SMILE!

  • Does anyone else think she looks like the asian version of Angelina Jolie. She has the same mouth and nose. Ha! And I love the way she smiles at the orchestra and conductor during the performance.

  • Does anyone else think she looks like the asian version of Angelina Jolie. She has the same mouth and nose. Ha!

  • TO those poeple who are nit picking this performance you need to get over yourselves, I doubt any of you could play with such technique and ferocity.

this is world class playing from a master of her instrument.

-And its a WORK not a SONG!

  • NO. Her visual antics put me clean off. Sorry

  • "Her visual antics put me off" ! Are you mad!?! You mean the way she raises her eyebrows every now and then? There aren't any visual antics, you WANKER!! If it's visual antics we're talking about let's discuss Vanessa Mae, or even Midori Goto!

OK...look...I apologise, I don't mean to be rude, but you're talking about the woman I love! In fact, I'm going to ask her to marry me... either her or Judge Judy, I haven't made my mind up yet.

  • ive seen her in person...she is 100% woman

  • sexy

  • beautiful, but sorry to say that this is not the best i've heard from her or the best i've heard this song being played, but still very good.

    message if you will...

  • actuallyyy they're perfectly in tune. XD

  • The E string and the D string is a bit out of tune ;))

  • At the shoreline amphitheatre in mountain view california ? are you shitting me ? when was this ?

  • She puts Mutter and Perlman to shame. Simple as that.

  • nah dont insult them.....sarah chang is my top 10 but that dont mean i critisize the other great ppl...

  • Although you are right, her consistancy is what I like about her the most. She has a nice, sweet tone when necessary, but can produce a dark tone as well. Mutter couldn't play spiccato for her life. Perlman's technical playing is nearly on par with Heifetz, but he's rather inconsistent and he doesn't show that much emotion in some of his recordings or concerts. I attended several live concerts. 2 were fantastic, one was just... pah, lets not go there.

  • She is perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm in love! I'm in love! It's as simple as that!

  • i love her so much!!!

  • It's refreshing to see someone who looks like they are truely having fun, while playing this piece as beautifully as she did. And just to prove that I'm a male pig: Yowza!

  • She is awesome! funny how she looks at the beginning of the fast part of it at around 6:50

  • she has a beautiful smile :)

  • you like her don't you.

  • racist!!!

  • What's wrong with being Asian?

  • you do know asians tend to be very good at music early on, though few actually make a career, those that do are very good. just what i've seen. but what's wrong with asians!?

  • wow. she is truly amazing.

  • She is awesome!

  • got a cold, 1 hour listening to her violin, the cold gone.

  • Really explosive ending--Gorgeous!

  • She went to my summer camp!!!! And studied violin there!!!!!!!!!!!

  • amazing.. i love how the musicians are clapping as much as the crowd is... they undoubtedly know the quality of player that just performed in front of them. for those who dont know.. the string players use their bows to make noise as a sign of recognition.

  • I can't do the finger plucking part because my fingers aren't calised enough. I need to practice until they form dead skin to do the plucking lol O.o

  • LOVE IT

  • ~wow~~!!

  • well...

the danish news papers have been going on about that Sarah Chang was comming to Denmark for some time now and i thought i would check her out see what all the fuzz was about...

let me say it this way...

im off to get some tickets..!

  • beatiful

  • Talent ? That's no talent. The word is too weak. Genius ? Again, too weak. Sarah is a combination of both +.... a lot more. In 58 years, I have never seen or heard anyone like Sarah (apart from Yehudi Menuhin... who actually acknowledged Sarah as the best soloist of this century, in an interview). I agree with him ABSOLUTELY !

  • Unavoidable in art to be subjective and I would agree 100%. Yet, we two old males, her young beauty, post concern we bias for sexual unconscious reasons. Do this test, imagine that a male plays, would you feel the same enchant?

  • This is an open demonstration of talent!

  • wow~ fantastic!!!

  • I'll say a thousand times "she's the most beautiful woman in the whole world".

  • Unavoidable in art to be subjective and I would agree 100%. Yet, we two males, her young beauty, post concern we bias for sexual unconscious reasons. Do this test, imagine that a male plays, would you feel the same enchant?

  • sarah chang, you OWN at life. !!!

  • The last 2 lines are what i intend for zigeunerweisen. I never hear the accel at the end !!!

  • Tengo los vellos de punta, no digo más XDDD

  • Wow, this peice is so cool. Sounds all.... badass.

  • Wow, this peice is so cool. Sounds all.... badass.

  • She's amazing! One of the absolute best!

  • Sarah Chang makes my life worth living.

  • Oh, one more thing - from 8:07 to the end has got to be some of the coolest action I've ever seen - and she's not acting too much - she's just perfect!

  • 3:50 to 4:00 looks like she's very pleased with what she's hearing!! Like "Ahh, yesss - perfecto"

  • ela dá uma desafinada no começo...kkkkkkk

  • Sarah Chang makes the violin sound exquisite

yet user friendly -she is among the best ever.

  • i love her..love watching and listening to her play..she s great! i was able to see her once in a concert..fascinating!

  • lol gr8 job !

  • at 4:00, why was she smiling? very Curious =D

  • cause she is enjoyin the music:))

most musicians also smile and enjoy the music.take maxim vengerov

  • i am glad shes korean =D

  • .. ahahha ... how come? XD

  • Actually, I think she's American. =D

  • perfect!!

  • Not being able to perform as well as a concert artist doesn't mean that a person can't make an intelligent critique of that artist.

The accoustics are understandaby bad (since this is open-air), and the video is badly vertically skewed. Chang's performance is good under the circumstances.

  • Your "critique" is not intelligent...

  • awesome, awesome & awesome!!!

  • Thanks very much Youtube I was only able to see Sarah Chang through Youtube. This is a great public service.

  • sarah is a born violinist. i love her performance.

  • It is nice to see performer enjoying what she does. I love watching and listening to her play.

  • Sarah, DU bist bezaubernd schoen, die noch kein Auge je gesehen. Du bist die schoenste Geigerin der ganzen Welt.

Soll die empfindung Liebe sein. Ja, ja ist es allein.

  • when she is smiling, you can't keep not smiling...

  • xD took me A LONG TIME to find this vid.

Gracee75, thank you for uploading! (:

If you can, can you add "zigeunerweisen" into the tags? Just a suggestion, haha. xD

  • fucking right :D love that song

  • 비브라토 너무 굵다.... 별루다...

  • I bet you can't do any better..

    Hah.

    Well, I can't either.

    So just enjoy the music.

    I think she's good.

    so.

    yeah.

  • agree with you .i feel uncomfortable to listen to her vibrato. .i don't like her style especially with zigeunerweisen.

  • She is the most beautiful violinist in the whole world.

  • I love the communication she has with the conductor! She's sooo lucky - playing with the Berlin Phil in front of such a huge audience. Sigh...

  • Puta que o pariu nessa muié!!!

  • *****i'm a violinist and i am the biggest fan of sarah, she is fantastic...

  • Awesome Performance!

Its funny how all the pseudo experts and armchair-virtuosos don't bother posting comments when they can't knock someone to make themselves feel important and educated ..tho I'm sure a few will show up before to long, lol.

  • it's amazing how she smiles so much. sarah chang is a rare find in a violinist.

she looks so happy to be playing the violin. most violinists, like hilary hahn and joshua bell are always so serious (bell) and too technical with no emotion (hahn). sarah chang is the whole package; happy, serious, technical, all at the same time.

  • What a sweet and talented young lady.

  • Tiptop.

How do you compare Sarah Chang with Hilary Hahn

  • she is the sweetest ever... no one smiles as much as she does while performing, no one communicates with the conductor and the orchestra and appreciate them as she does.... "nice&easy" that's what her style is about...

  • @musique55 You're right I consider this girl performs real music. She and her orchestra are awsome!

  • I like so Much Sarah Chang's zigeunerweisen :P thw slow part is very synchronized but the fast part is still very unsynchronized. But Sarah Chang is really diserving a 5 star :P
