Truly remarkable - a good composer writes music with allowance for sheer brilliance, Sarah Chang is an inimitable Virtuoso of unmatched proportions - Bravo!!!!
Sarah Chang is a brilliant violinist. She has an amazing technique. Beaucoup d'émotion, de finesse dans son jeu. Présence sur scène incroyable. Elle a tout mon respect!
So good to be able to listen to "gypsylike" music in this place which was build in 1936 Nazi Berlin. Thank you Amerika, thank you Russia and thank you Sarah Chang we owe you big time! :D
I wonder why the Carmen Fantasy videos of Sarah Chang playing with the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Placido Domingo, have been removed from YouTube. They were my favorite to watch. She's so lively and vivacious. Today our local radio station played Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy but with another violinist, a male, and it just sounded so tame that I called and asked if they could play the Sarah Chang rendition!.
incredible, so jung, so hübsch und solch ein unwahrscheinlich großes Gefühl, kann das Zufall sein? Ein weiterer Beweis für die Kunst des Übernatürlichen!!!
there will always be people who hate this and people who love it and people who are just in between. Dont say she sucks or w.e. because that is just YOUR opinion. after all, she's famous for a reason. You don't have to like it, but don't disrespect the performer. lets just enjoy the music. everyone has their own interpretation of a song, this is just hers. stop bringing so much hate into music.
How can you possibly criticize her? This piece was specifically written to be played in an improvisitory style to best imitate the gypsy violin playing. The way Sarasate played it does not set a standard for how it should always be played. There are some things she did in this performance that I didn't do when I performed it, but that doesn't make her playing any less amazing.
ok...shes flashy...but who cares? still i prefer how pablo played it himself...much more honestly, very elegant and modest...and his sound is insane...so smooth...! look it up...its on utube
if all of you critics think that her playing lacks in this piece, i'd like to see you do better. she's one of the most talented violinists of this century and i bet that none of you can even come close to the standard she plays at. so just sit back and enjoy the piece.

I think what they are trying to say is that she seems to have no love for the piece. As a violinist myself, i have to love the piece or it seems as you play it with no feeling. Its just keeping time. Hope this explains it.
It is a delight to hear this piece from a purely violinist playing perspective.
Sarah plays the violin effortlessly, like it was an extension of herself. I know she was a prodigy but that doesn't change things. Her playing is easy listening due to her nice tone, bowing nuances, and her timing is right, like a true master.
As to her musicianship, not to seem presumptuous but I it was too pretty and proper and lacked the gypsy tears, fire and soul.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
agree with your comment "lacked the gypsy tears, fire and soul" her play is great, no mistake, but hard to find deep emotional delivery. somehow her play is too crystalic and may be modern to interpret some part of classical qualities.
we are talking about a piece of music that was written some 200 years ago. nobody who's alive has heard or knows how the original composer wanted this particular piece to be played or can claim to know precisely what's this so called "classical qualities" you've mentioned. saying that you personally don't find her playing appealing or moving would've sufficed here, instead of trying to sound like an ostentatious pedagogue in a vain attempt to aggrandize and rationalize your own personal taste.
There is actually a recording of Sarasate playing this on Youtube. It's probably so distorted that you can't really hear his emotions, but almost nobody plays it like him...in fact, I can't think of one person that plays this exactly the way he does. However, this I agree with you in saying that there is not one way to play this "correctly".
@bluemonolith88 FALSE. This piece of music was written in 1878. Sarasate's lifespan is 1844-1908. As a matter of fact, I believe this is THE original Zigeunerweisen rendition played by Sarasate himself in 1904. He made it sound so effortless:

i love how a lot of people accept errors in the difficult parts during performances (i.e. harmonics) just because its the nature of the piece. its more about musicianship than technicality (although it certainly helps)
She is an excellent violinist and performer; I enjoy listening to her. One of the things I like about her is that she LOVES the violin-she smiles when she knows she has nailed something or enjoys part of the music, so as a fellow violinist I understand that & feel her joy. Violinists are individuals and I don't want or expect the same thing out of their performances, I enjoy all the little different nuances and flavors. If you want perfection listen to a computer program

A lot of POSTURING, that's what I wanted to say. So, there...I said it. Ciao all. Check out violinist Chee Yun...a true "artist" and the true "creme de la creme" of violinists. Not only technique and total virtuosity but NO ONE...puts more emotion into a piece than Chee Yun.
..I also have to agree with you 6350246, the visual antics are very offputting. Chang has played this piece a bijillion times and knows it as well as we know how to open a door...she is going through the motions here and her body language and the faces seem so full of pretense. She seems more into herself while playing than she is into the piece..kind of 'displaying' herself as a showpiece rather than having the music be the center of attention. It's no wonder why the performance is mediocre.
Oh for goodness sake....so she missed as plucked note. She's not a bloody robot! If you prefer another player then by all means say so but your musical judgement is poor if it is based on pedantic little mistakes. This is music, not chartered accountancy. Sheesh!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You're kidding right? if some rock n roll player missed a note in a well known solo..many classical fans would be all over the player with criticism like ants on a gallon of wild honey. People like Chang..so accomplished..so praised,adored,worshipped..are supposed to be the cream of the crop, top of the top of CLASSICAL 'ARTISTS'...she messed up big time and can't even keep the her timing in check with the orchestra & conductor here! 'not chartered accountancy'. Get real. Brits.....Jesus.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
After just listening to this again..wow..she actuallly MISSED a plucked note in the last section because she's rushing...she's playing to fast then she blew the ending as she sped up faster than the orchestra and was ahead on the very last note and seemed to swipe the bow again WITH the orchestras last note just hitting 'air'. I suggest anyone interested to look on YT at Chee Yun playing the same piece and notice the huge difference in feel and quality and expression of the notes played.
Chang is an excellent player but the violinist who outplays her in not only emotional content, bowing technique, phrasing and composure as well is another Korean violinist, Chee Yun. I have seen them both live more than a few times in the last 15 years and Chee Yun is above category, possibly the greatest violinist (or in the top three at least) of the last 50 years...and no, I'm not exaggerating.
What amazes me about her is how incredibly well she gets around the fiddle with such small hands! She has no problem with tenths at all. I honsestly dont know how she does it. Perlman has such large hands he can play in the upper register without shifting postions. Chang - amazing!
Does anyone else think she looks like the asian version of Angelina Jolie. She has the same mouth and nose. Ha! And I love the way she smiles at the orchestra and conductor during the performance.
"Her visual antics put me off" ! Are you mad!?! You mean the way she raises her eyebrows every now and then? There aren't any visual antics, you WANKER!! If it's visual antics we're talking about let's discuss Vanessa Mae, or even Midori Goto!
OK...look...I apologise, I don't mean to be rude, but you're talking about the woman I love! In fact, I'm going to ask her to marry me... either her or Judge Judy, I haven't made my mind up yet.
Although you are right, her consistancy is what I like about her the most. She has a nice, sweet tone when necessary, but can produce a dark tone as well. Mutter couldn't play spiccato for her life. Perlman's technical playing is nearly on par with Heifetz, but he's rather inconsistent and he doesn't show that much emotion in some of his recordings or concerts. I attended several live concerts. 2 were fantastic, one was just... pah, lets not go there.
It's refreshing to see someone who looks like they are truely having fun, while playing this piece as beautifully as she did. And just to prove that I'm a male pig: Yowza!
you do know asians tend to be very good at music early on, though few actually make a career, those that do are very good. just what i've seen. but what's wrong with asians!?
amazing.. i love how the musicians are clapping as much as the crowd is... they undoubtedly know the quality of player that just performed in front of them. for those who dont know.. the string players use their bows to make noise as a sign of recognition.
the danish news papers have been going on about that Sarah Chang was comming to Denmark for some time now and i thought i would check her out see what all the fuzz was about...
Talent ? That's no talent. The word is too weak. Genius ? Again, too weak. Sarah is a combination of both +.... a lot more. In 58 years, I have never seen or heard anyone like Sarah (apart from Yehudi Menuhin... who actually acknowledged Sarah as the best soloist of this century, in an interview). I agree with him ABSOLUTELY !
Unavoidable in art to be subjective and I would agree 100%. Yet, we two old males, her young beauty, post concern we bias for sexual unconscious reasons. Do this test, imagine that a male plays, would you feel the same enchant?
Unavoidable in art to be subjective and I would agree 100%. Yet, we two males, her young beauty, post concern we bias for sexual unconscious reasons. Do this test, imagine that a male plays, would you feel the same enchant?
Oh, one more thing - from 8:07 to the end has got to be some of the coolest action I've ever seen - and she's not acting too much - she's just perfect!
Not being able to perform as well as a concert artist doesn't mean that a person can't make an intelligent critique of that artist.
The accoustics are understandaby bad (since this is open-air), and the video is badly vertically skewed. Chang's performance is good under the circumstances.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
my goodness, what has happened to her? She seems to have lost a great deal of technical ability from younger. (ex. her sautille/spiccato (can't even tell which one) is gritty) Not to impugn on her talent. Still an amazing performance.
Its funny how all the pseudo experts and armchair-virtuosos don't bother posting comments when they can't knock someone to make themselves feel important and educated ..tho I'm sure a few will show up before to long, lol.
it's amazing how she smiles so much. sarah chang is a rare find in a violinist.
she looks so happy to be playing the violin. most violinists, like hilary hahn and joshua bell are always so serious (bell) and too technical with no emotion (hahn). sarah chang is the whole package; happy, serious, technical, all at the same time.
she is the sweetest ever... no one smiles as much as she does while performing, no one communicates with the conductor and the orchestra and appreciate them as she does.... "nice&easy" that's what her style is about...
I like so Much Sarah Chang's zigeunerweisen :P thw slow part is very synchronized but the fast part is still very unsynchronized. But Sarah Chang is really diserving a 5 star :P

Just to give you a little stylistic wake-up, blue, the better choice of words would have
been "Sarasate lived from 1844 to l908. " To say that Sarasate's lifespan is 1844-
1908 is to suggest that according to group estimates, Sarasate should live until
l908, if all goes well. Not to alarm you, if you happening to be emerging from a very
long coma, but we're well on the way to 2012!

you do know asians tend to be very good at music early on, though few actually make a career, those that do are very good. just what i've seen. but what's wrong with asians!?

amazing.. i love how the musicians are clapping as much as the crowd is... they undoubtedly know the quality of player that just performed in front of them. for those who dont know.. the string players use their bows to make noise as a sign of recognition.

Not being able to perform as well as a concert artist doesn't mean that a person can't make an intelligent critique of that artist.
The accoustics are understandaby bad (since this is open-air), and the video is badly vertically skewed. Chang's performance is good under the circumstances.
TomBarrister 4 years ago
Your "critique" is not intelligent...

my goodness, what has happened to her? She seems to have lost a great deal of technical ability from younger. (ex. her sautille/spiccato (can't even tell which one) is gritty) Not to impugn on her talent. Still an amazing performance.

sarah is a born violinist. i love her performance.

Awesome Performance!
Its funny how all the pseudo experts and armchair-virtuosos don't bother posting comments when they can't knock someone to make themselves feel important and educated ..tho I'm sure a few will show up before to long, lol.
flyby321 4 years ago
it's amazing how she smiles so much. sarah chang is a rare find in a violinist.
she looks so happy to be playing the violin. most violinists, like hilary hahn and joshua bell are always so serious (bell) and too technical with no emotion (hahn). sarah chang is the whole package; happy, serious, technical, all at the same time.
jamiison 4 years ago 3
What a sweet and talented young lady.
DieselBodine 4 years ago
Tiptop.
How do you compare Sarah Chang with Hilary Hahn
LMGDI 5 years ago
she is the sweetest ever... no one smiles as much as she does while performing, no one communicates with the conductor and the orchestra and appreciate them as she does.... "nice&easy" that's what her style is about...
musique55 5 years ago 2
@musique55 You're right I consider this girl performs real music. She and her orchestra are awsome!

I like so Much Sarah Chang's zigeunerweisen :P thw slow part is very synchronized but the fast part is still very unsynchronized. But Sarah Chang is really diserving a 5 star :P
