Low low level of driving. Plenty of mistakes, wrong lines, missed apex, messy exits and light breaking. Put some serious rally drivers on this track again and stop with clowns such as Tajima or Rhys Millen...
DUUUUUUUUDE, anyone else get a heart attack from watching this thinkin someone is going to die from this thing. They are so freakin close to the road.....
@MangoSmoothie16 He was much better on tarmac than he was on gravel, on the gravel he is on and off the throttle through 80% of the the corners and he is breaking too early and not on the throttle fast enough.
Put a more skilled driver in that car and the time would be amazing.
Round the hairpins you're thinking "Why is he slowing so much, come on come on", then you see just how sideways it goes and just how little grip there is to play with. Skillz.
...absolutely great run....respect! But Walter Röhrl did it in 1987 in only 47 seconds more...with a 24 years older car on 100% gravel. That is for me the real record..!
Can't believe all the idiots sitting on the outside of the sharp turns - - If a car goes off & kills a few of them--- Well, they're just asking for it. Great Racing though.
@rakkipallo well done sir! in 2003 i had bought the VHS version of the beautiful "Climb Dance", in a Motorshow in Melbourne, but i couldn't rememebr that Ari Vatanen was the name of the driver. in any case you are absolutely right. that trial on Pikes Peak is daring and beautiful. above all, beautiful.
...but the car is so powerful, you can't afford to drive it at the limit because it's too easy to flip-out (i would imagine) and that would mean instant death here. Lower-powered cars can afford to drive more on their limit so any comparison with what Röhrl might do is purely guess work.
Not to compare with Walter Röhrl's race in 1987... Just legendary to climb this hill in under 11 minutes with a 25 year old car, a much difficult tarmac and with the age of 40... Röhrl would make this track with the SX4 in under 9 minutes I guess... I saw Walter on a classic Rallye in Germany three years ago, also on an AUDI S1, still amazing this guy!!!
This is really awesome. So who is going to be the first team to embrace electrics here? They should have a huge advantage the last 1/3 of the course - no power loss! Start out with 800hp/ finish with 800hp - whats not to like/. ;)
You have to drive up this mountain to fully realise just how terrifying it is. Your respect and admiration for these guys increases exponentially when you witness the 2000 foot drop offs first hand and try to imagine driving it full tilt. On the upper part above the tree line especially, one slip and there wouldn't be the slightest chance of survival. Awesome.
I applaud Tajima's efforts, but I don't understand why anybody would pave tarmac over the greatest gravel hill climbs in all of history, Pike's Peak. Would Tajima have been able to breake the 10' barrier had he been racing on the same course from the 80s? Regardless, he has outstanding skill to be able to control that monster of a car on the gravel sections! Great video! Thanks for the upload!!
@ldsdonuts: I just read up on the paving. The Sierra Club sued the City of Colorado Springs because runoff from the gravel used to maintain the road is "ruining" the alpine wetlands. Apparently increased speed and traffic due to the paving will assist in maintaining the alpine wetlands. Oh well, good bye famous gravel hillclimb from 1916 and hello new famous tarmac hillclimb of 2012.
@ldsdonuts Part of it, I suspect, is that it's also a daily driven road for us regular folk and there were a number of fatal accidents both for rally drivers and the rest of us that prompted them to pave the really bad sections- since then, society has gotten even more tame and they have paved more of the road...
But I agree. It was just silly to pave it. Watching the *old* Tajima videos is certainly more exciting.
@jeffman3 I can understand the need for the "regular folk" to get around, but paving the road will probably just lead to more spectacular accidents at higher speed. We learned from the Group B era of rally driving that the cars may just be too fast for the drivers, whether it was gravel or tarmac. I think huge, ugly, but effective guard rails are the way to go. I would love to drive up Pike's Peak at speed, but I'm not skilled or crazy enough to test my limits on that road yet.
Three people thought that Tajima was a real monster .

NO really i find it cool that they paved half of it. Its way harder for the mechanics, they have to set the car for both surfaces
